This volume explores the creation of 'written spaces' through the accretion of monumental inscriptions and non-official graffiti in the Latin-speaking West between c.200 BC and AD 300. The shift to an epigraphic culture demonstrates new mentalities regarding the use of language, the relationship between local elites and the population, and between local elites and the imperial power. John Severance (ca. 1609/1615-1682) was born at Ipswich, England, and married Abigail Kimball (d. 1658), daughter of Richard and Ursula Kimball, in 1635 at Ipswich. They had eleven children, 1637-1658. The family immigrated to America in 1637, settled first at Boston, and moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1639. He died at Salisbury. Descendants of his sons, John Severans (b. 1647); Joseph Severance (1649-before 1725); and Ephraim Severance (1656-1734), lived in Massachusetts, New Hamsphire, Maine, Connecticut, and elsewhere. Record chiefly follows male lines.
