The Signers of the Declaration of Independence - Complete Biographies in One Volume by L. Carroll Judson Pdf

This book will carry the reader back to first principles, and point plainly and clearly to the land marks of 1776, as fixed by the signers of the declaration of our independence, and to rouse the patriot to a just sense of our blood-bought privileges and the necessity of preserving them pure and undefiled, has been the constant aim of the author. It presents biographies of fifty-eight individuals, all engaged in the accomplishment of a single object, the independence of the United State. The author has labored to be concise without being obscure, to inform the understanding without burdening the memory. He has introduced many apothegms, intending to improve the mind and mend the heart. The causes that led to the revolution, it's interesting progress, its happy termination and the formation of our federal government, are all amply delineated. Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 7 (Classic Reprint) by John Sanderson Pdf

Excerpt from Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 7 The great tragic poet of antiquity has observed, and historians and philosophers in every age, have repeated the observation, that no one should be pronounced happy till death has closed the period of human uncertainty. Yet if to be happy, is to descend into the vale of years, loved and honoured; to enjoy in life, that posthumous fame, which is usually bestowed only beyond the tomb; to see the labours of our earlier years, crowned with more than hoped for success; and to find those theoretic visions which untried, could offer nothing more than expected excellence, exceeding in practical utility their promised advantages; if these can confer aught of hap piness on this side the grave, then may the subject of our memoir be esteemed truly happy. He has indeed outlived those who were the partners of his toils, and the companions of his earlier years; but in so doing, he has not experienced the usual fate of mor tality, in outliving the sympathy, the kindness and the love of his fellow creatures. A new race of companions has risen around him, who have added to those feelings the deeper ones of admiration, respect, and gratitude. Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) by John Sanderson Pdf

Excerpt from Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 4 Parties will exist in all popular governments. At the pe riod when Mr. M'kean first appeared in public life, Dela ware was divided into two parties, designated by the names of court, and countryf The leading members of the former were the governor, the officers of government, and expectants of o ice; the latter, of which Mr. M'kean was a distin guished member, was composed of those who desired an in dependent judiciary, and impartial laws. The judges, ma gistrates, and every other officer in the province, held their commissions during the pleasure of the governor, or of some of his favourites. Hence, when a practising lawyer, as was generally the case, enjoyed this enviable situation, the judges of all the courts were evidently under an undue in uence, and justice was frequently perverted. Not illustrated. 1823 edition. Excerpt: ...and neither the precarious state of his health, the remonstrances of his friends, nor a journey of two hundred miles, in the month of December, could prevent him from attending, to support his early political friend and associate, Mr. Jefferson. In 1801, he was elected a member of the convention to revise the constitution of the state of New York, and, at a subsequent period, served twice as presidential elector. At the earnest solicitation of his friends, he was once more elected a senator from the senatorial district into which he had removed, but, from the advanced period of his life, he was unable to bestow much attention to his public duties. In 1820, although he was unable, from the infirmities of age, to leave his home, he was again complimented with being named upon the electoral college. His bodily strength and activity were remarkable for his years; and he enjoyed an almost uninterrupted state of health until a year or two before his death: his mental vigour remained unimpaired to the last. A short time previous to his demise, he complained of an unusual debility: on the first of August, 1821, he was affected with a partial stagnation in the current of the blood, and expired on the fourth, at the age of eighty-seven years, meeting death with the characteristic firmness which distinguished him through life. A decent tomb has been erected over his ashes; but his name is inscribed upon the more imperishable monument of his country's independence. Unlike the tablets of brass and of marble which perpetuate the fame of their heroes in the places where they are deposited, it issues from the mausoleum, and proclaims the equal rights of man to the great moral intelligence of the human race. To the benighted victims of oppression, --a..

Lives of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence by Benson John Lossing Pdf

"In 1776, fifty-six Americans signed a simple document which unalterably changed the course of this country. Most know of the importance of the Declaration of Independence, but few know much about its Signers. This book (originally published in 1848 by eminent 19th-century historian, Benson J. Lossing) provides a brief biography of each signer of the Declaration. Accompanied by fifty engravings, these biographies shed light on what Lossing terms, 'the chief events in the lives of the men who stood sponsors at the baptism in blood of our infant republic.' Through this book - long used in American schools - we, too, can discover the private and public virtues of those venerated Americans who helped create the most stable and enviable nation in the world."--Page 4 of cover.
