The Silver Bridge Disaster of 1967 by Stephan G. Bullard,Bridget J. Gromek,Martha Fout,Ruth Fout,The Point Pleasant River Museum Pdf

Point Pleasant’s Silver Bridge, the first eyebar suspension bridge in the United States, was an engineering marvel when it was constructed in 1927 and 1928. Located on US Highway 35, the bridge spanned the Ohio River and linked Point Pleasant, West Virginia, with the towns of Kanauga and Gallipolis, Ohio. For almost 40 years, the structure provided dependable service for travelers in the region. On December 15, 1967, this service came to a dramatic and disastrous end. At 4:58 p.m., during the height of rush hour, the bridge suddenly collapsed. Rescue and recovery operations started immediately but were hampered by poor weather conditions and freezing rain. The cause of the collapse was linked to the bridge’s innovative design. Undetected corrosion stress cracks caused an eyebar on the Ohio side to fracture; because the eyebars were linked together in a chain, the failure of one led to the catastrophic collapse of the entire bridge. In total, 46 lives were lost in the disaster.

The Silver Bridge Tragedy by George Dudding Pdf

The Silver Bridge Tragedy occurred one fateful evening on December 15, 1967 when local citizens on both sides of the river at Point Pleasant, West Virginia were rushing home from their normal routine of work or shopping. Local and out-of-state truckers were trying to make their scheduled deliveries. High up on the superstructure of the 39 year old Silver Bridge, a critical flaw had developed in one of the eyebars. Unbeknownst to those in the heavy rush hour traffic below, a serious structural failure was about to happen and the resulting domino effect was about to plunge the small community into a shocking tragedy which, to this day, has not been forgotten. At 5:00 PM, the entire bridge over the Ohio River collapsed, resulting in 46 fatalities and 9 injured victims. The lives of family, friends and co-workers were forever impacted.

Ten days before Christmas. Jingle Bells fill the air. On December 15, 1967 at 5 P. M., the gorgeous Silver Bridge that connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Gallipolis, Ohio crashed into the Ohio River taking with it forty-six lives. Vincent Booton had gone across the bridge to buy a new color television set for his family. Kayleen MacKlintoc is a wealthy college student is home for winter break. Fred and Anabell Myers have a doctor's appointment. George Henderson is picking up a diamond bracelet for his wife. Jim Henderson is looking for a way to avoid the draft, but there is no room in the Henderson house for cowards. Denise Sheppard is a single mother with two kids. She works at a truck stop as a waitress and can hardly afford peanut butter much less Christmas presents. Ken and Gloria Gilmore are newlyweds, deeply in love with their whole lives ahead of them. Mary Ann Gilmore is a vivacious teenager anticipating her first kiss. They all have one thing in common: The Silver Bridge and the horribly cold water that awaits. One loud boom and the bridge goes down. A minute later, dozens of cars are underwater, and people are beating on the windows and doors, trying to escape certain death. Trapped, dying or already dead from concrete slabs and twisted metal that crushed cars and skulls with indifference. Trapped, dying with no way out. Christmas presents wash up on banks of the Ohio River.

The I-35W Bridge Collapse by Kimberly J. Brown Pdf

2019 Minnesota Book Award Finalist in Memoir & Creative Nonfiction “A bridge shouldn’t just fall down,” Senator Amy Klobuchar said after the August 1, 2007, collapse of the Minneapolis I-35W eight-lane steel truss bridge, which killed 13 motorists, injured 145, and left a collective wound on the city’s psyche and infrastructure. On her way to a soccer game with a fellow teammate, Kimberly J. Brown experienced the collapse firsthand, falling 114 feet in her teammate’s car to the Mississippi River. Although terrified, injured, and in shock, she survived. In this sobering memoir and exposé, Brown recounts her harrowing experience. In the aftermath of the disaster, Brown became both an advocate for survivors and an unofficial whistle-blower about decaying infrastructure. She details her investigation and correspondence with Thornton Tomasetti engineers, including the false official account of the collapse and the eventual revelation of its real causes. In addition, she chronicles the ongoing decay of America’s bridges and the continuing challenges faced by leaders to address infrastructure problems across the country. After nearly a decade of research into the collapse and her active and ongoing recovery from psychic and physical injuries, Brown shares her experience and answers the questions we should all be asking: Why did this bridge collapse? And what could have been done to prevent this tragedy?

Construction Failure by Jacob Feld,Kenneth L. Carper Pdf

First published in 1968, Jacob Feld's Construction Failure has longbeen considered the classic text on the subject. Retaining all ofthe key components of Feld's comprehensive exploration of the rootcauses of failure, this Second Edition addresses a multitude ofimportant industry developments to bring this landmark work up todate for a new generation of engineers, architects, andstudents. In addition to detailed coverage of current design tools, techniques, materials, and construction methods, ConstructionFailure, Second Edition features an entire chapter on theburgeoning area of construction litigation, including a thoroughexamination of alternative dispute resolution techniques. Like theoriginal, this edition discusses technical and procedural failuresof many different types of structures, but is now supplemented withnew case studies to illustrate the dynamics of failure in actiontoday. Jacob Feld knew thirty years ago that in order to learn from ourmistakes, we must first acknowledge and understand them. With thisrevised volume, Kenneth Carper has ensured that Feld'snow-posthumous message will continue to be heard for years tocome. Jacob Feld's comprehensive work on failure analysis has now beenskillfully amended to address current design and constructiontools, materials, and practices. Building on the first edition'speerless examination of the causes and lessons of failure,Construction Failure, Second Edition provides you with expandedcoverage of: * Technical, procedural, structural, and nonstructural failures * Natural hazards, earthworks, soil and foundation problems, andmore * Reinforced, precast and prestressed concrete, steel, timber, masonry, and other materials * Responsibility and litigation concerns, dispute avoidance, andalternative dispute resolution techniques * Construction safety issues * Many different types of structures, including dams andbridges Construction Failure has as much to teach us today as it did thirtyyears ago. This revised volume is an essential resource for designengineers, architects, construction managers, lawyers, and studentsin all of these fields.
