The Sleeping Beauty Picture Book - Containing the Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard, the Baby's Own Alphabet - Illustrated by Walter Crane by Walter Crane Pdf

This wonderfully illustrated collection of fairy tales and rhymes, The Sleeping Beauty Picture Book is one of the celebrated 'Toy Books' produced by Walter Crane and Edmund Evans. Through a series of colour illustrations and integrated text, it will delight readers both young and old with such tales as 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Baby's Own Alphabet' and 'Bluebeard'. Walter Crane (1845 - 1915), was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered to be the most influential, and among the most prolific, children's book creator of his generation. Alongside such names as Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, he was also one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery theme. Crane's work is characteristically colourful and delightfully detailed, taking its inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement (of which he was a member), as well as the iconic child-in-the-garden motif. The Sleeping Beauty Picture Book is a fantastic example of his art. Appearing alongside the text, Walter Crane's illustrations further refine and elucidate Hawthorne's enchanting storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

The Sleeping Beauty Picture Book - Containing the Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard, the Baby's Own Alphabet by Anonim Pdf

Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the earliest contributors to children's literature and one of the most influential illustrators in the development of children's colour picture books. Crane began working for Edmund Evans in 1864 producing bright, colourful children's books which revolutionised the type of children's books available. He created a series of 'Toy Books' between 1865-1875 which contained fairy stories, nursery rhymes and other tales of adventures. His wonderful Japanese influenced illustrations with their bright, bold, flat colour and black outline never failed to entertain both children and adults. This book 'The Sleeping Beauty Picture Book' is one of many 'Toy Books', it contains the stories, The Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard and The Baby's Own Alphabet. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.

LONG, LONG AGO, in ancient times, there lived a King and Queen, And for the blessing of a child their longing sore had been: At last, a little daughter fair, to their great joy, was given, And to the christening feast they made, they bade the Fairies seven- The Fairies seven, who loved the land-that they the child might bless, Yet one old Fairy they left out, in pure forgetfulness. And at the feast, the dishes fair were of the reddest gold; But when the Fairy came, not one for her, so bad and old, Angry was she, because her place and dish had been forgot, And angry things she muttered long, and kept her anger hot. Until the Fairy godmothers their gifts and wishes gave: She waited long to spoil the gifts, and her revenge to have. One gave the Princess goodness, and one gave her beauty rare; One gave her sweetest singing voice; one, gracious mien and air; One, skill in dancing; one, all cleverness; and then the crone Came forth, and muttered, angry still, and good gift gave she none; But said, that in the future years the Princess young should die, By pricking of a spindle-point-ah, woeful prophecy! But now, a kind young Fairy, who had waited to the last, Stepped forth, and said, "No, she shall sleep till a hundred years are past; And then she shall be wakened by a King's son-truth I tell- And he will take her for his wife, and all will yet be well." In vain in all her father's Court the spinning-wheel's forbid In vain in all the country-side the spindles sharp are hid; For in a lonely turret high, and up a winding stair, There lives an ancient woman who still turns her wheel with care. The Princess found her out one day, and tried to learn to spin; Alas! the spindle pricked her hand-the charm had entered in! And down she falls in death-like sleep: they lay her on her bed, And all around her sink to rest-a palace of the dead! A hundred years pass-still they sleep, and all around the place A wood of thorns has risen up-no path a man can trace. At last, a King's son, in the hunt, asked how long it had stood, And what old towers were those he saw above the ancient wood.

Bluebeard by Casie E. Hermansson Pdf

Bluebeard is the main character in one of the grisliest and most enduring fairy tales of all time. A serial wife murderer, he keeps a horror chamber in which remains of all his previous matrimonial victims are secreted from his latest bride. She is given all the keys but forbidden to open one door of the castle. Astonishingly, this fairy tale was a nursery room staple, one of the tales translated into English from Charles Perrault's French Mother Goose Tales. Bluebeard: A Reader's Guide to the English Tradition is the first major study of the tale and its many variants (some, like “Mr. Fox,” native to England and America) in English: from the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century chapbooks, children's toybooks, pantomimes, melodramas, and circus spectaculars, through the twentieth century in music, literature, art, film, and theater. Chronicling the story's permutations, the book presents examples of English true-crime figures, male and female, called Bluebeards, from King Henry VIII to present-day examples. Bluebeard explores rare chapbooks and their illustrations and the English transformation of Bluebeard into a scimitar-wielding Turkish tyrant in a massively influential melodramatic spectacle in 1798. Following the killer's trail over the years, Casie E. Hermansson looks at the impact of nineteenth-century translations into English of the German fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, and the particularly English story of how Bluebeard came to be known as a pirate. This book will provide readers and scholars an invaluable and thorough grasp on the many strands of this tale over centuries of telling.

Ariane & Bluebeard by Matthew G. Brown,Th. EmilHomerin Pdf

Maurice Maeterlinck described his libretto Ariane et Barbe-bleue as "a sort of legendary opera, or fairy [opera], in three acts." In 1907, Paul Dukas finished setting Maeterlinck's libretto to music, and the opera's Paris premiere was lauded as a landmark in operatic history. Ariane & Bluebeard: From Fairy Tale to Comic Book Opera offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary look at this historic opera, including its structure, reception, and cultural implications. This lively collection juxtaposes chapters from experts in music, literature, the visual arts, gender studies, and religion and philosophy with vibrant illustrations by comic artist P. Craig Russell and interviews with performers and artists. Featuring material from newly discovered documents and the first English translation of several important sources, Ariane & Bluebeard allows readers to imagine the opera in its various incarnations: as symbolist show, comic book, children's fairy tale, and more.
