The present study focused on social work in the emergency room in a U.S. Air Force medical center in Biloxi, MS. Generalizing from the Air Force medical system to the civilian health care sector must be done with caution as the populations served by military and civilian hospitals may be different. Eligibility for military medical services falls under specific guidelines that may influence the age groups of populations served by a military emergency department. Even within the Air Force medical system, emergency services and populations served may vary depending on the overseas, stateside, or remote stateside location of a base, or the size of a medical center, a hospital, or a clinic.
