Who Wrought the Bible? by Yair Mazor Pdf

Approaching the Hebrew Bible as a work of literary art, Yair Mazor examines its many genres, including historical narratives, poetic narratives, poetry, psalms, and songs. Line drawings from a late nineteenth-century Bible illustrate many of the most famous scenes in scripture, suggesting another aesthetic layer of the text. By breaking the Bible into constituent parts, Mazor traces the range of its writing styles, reconfiguring the work as a literary collage and an artistic masterpiece. He shows how the aesthetics of the texts that comprise the Bible serve its over-arching message, and he develops a literary portrait of its authors by decoding their cryptic aesthetic devices.

The Song of Songs Unveiled by Benjamin Weiss Pdf

Excerpt from The Song of Songs Unveiled: A New Translation and Exposition of the Song of Solomon Dear reader, the portion of the Holy Scriptures of which the following pages form a new Translation and Expo sitiou, is one to Which, as a Whole, no key has been found by any of the ancient or modern writers on it, though they have been very numerous, and some of them very able. It has been the lot of this Song to be misunderstood, mis interpreted, and misapplied, both by Jew and Christian. The Rabbinical writers, While they acknowledged the sacred ness of the Song, enveloped it at the same time in such a thick and impenetrable cloud of Cabalistic mysteries and absurd dreams of human invention, that its real contents are effectually hidden from the most careful and patient inquirer. Early Christian writers having, for the most part, yielded to their well-known propensity to mystify and spiritualize everything, have done over again the work of the Cabalistic Rabbis, and buried the real Song out of sight by their fanciful superstructures. Among modern Christian writers, some follow in the footsteps of the ancients, While others follow new inventions of their own. Some mystify and spiritualise it out and out, others make a Wholesale pre sent of it to Pharaoh's daughter, and others still think of equitably dividing it between the combatants, and while endeavouring to find in it both Christ and Solomon, the Church of Christ and Pharaoh's daughter, lose all, and find nothing. In the following work the author undertakes to prove that Solomon's Song celebrates the most prominent and important events of the ancient Church and her relation to the Covenant Angel, from Horeb to Calvary; but as the scheme is fully explained in the Introduction it is unnces sary to enter on it here. The chief object of the author in the following pages is to rectify the mistranslated words and phrases, which in some instances have obscured entire passages, and to ex plain the metaphors and figures employed by the royal penman; but more especially to illustrate every passage by comparing it with the portion of Sacred History whose events it celebrates. Though the practical application has by no means been lost sight of or neglected, and an occa sioual exhortation or warning has been given where it has forced itself upon the mind of the author, still the field for practical application has increased so wonderfully by the new aspect which the Song assumes in this Book, that to have made it practical throughout would at least have doubled the volume, and perhaps have greatly interfered with the power and beauty of the historical connexion which he has shown to exist between this Song and the sacred his tory of the ancient Church of God. Besides, the author trusts that some of the masters in Israel, considering the Song in the entirely new aspect in which it appears in the following pages, and appreciating the new and rich field for practical application which is here unfolded, will under take such a work, and do it far more justice than the author, who is a foreigner to the English language, could be ex pected to do. The Song of Songs by Charlie Cleverly Pdf

The Song of Songs is redolent with poetic imagery, featuring as it does the love songs of a man and a woman as they explore their relationship. Down the centuries it has often been interpreted either as a sexually-charged love story or an entirely metaphorical imagining of the relationship between God and his people. In this deeply-felt book Charlie Cleverly argues that both interpretations are critical to a true understanding of this book that lies right at the heart of the Bible. If our relationships with one another and with God are not both fully in tune with our humanity, in all its richness, and with our spirituality in its highest form, then we will fall short of all we can be in our lives. Drawing on a wide range of sources, literary and theological and across the ages, Charlie Cleverly makes the case for a new, rounded understanding of this important book.

Solomon's Song of Love by Craig Glickman Pdf

One of the most beautiful and mysterious books of the Bible is laid open for all to understand in this unparalleled work by Dr. Craig Glickman. With apparent ease, Glickman unveils the mysteries of the Song of Solomon in a popular-read format. But the surface simplicity is backed up by a lifetime of study and scholarship, three special appendices, and interpretive notes that validate his interpretation. Also included is a fresh translation of the Song published in this book for the first time. Initial readers of this book offer resounding praise. This book is "the most fascinating book I have ever read about the Song," says Dr. Henry Cloud. Old Testament scholars praise it as an academic breakthrough: "clear, cogent, and convincing," says Dr. Eugene Merrill; "a valuable contribution to our translation and understanding of the Song," says Ed Blum, general editor of the HCSB translation. Dr. Paul Meier sums it up in these words, "Craig weaves thousands of years of wisdom together to paint a vivid word picture of emotional and sexual intimacy."

Catalogue of English Bible Translations by William J. Chamberlin Pdf

While other Bible catalogs are available, this comprehensive reference book is destined to become the standard in the field. Chamberlin's one-volume work traces the publication history of multiple editions of Bible translations and offers valuable decriptive annotations. The catalog not only includes complete Bibles, but also Old and New Testaments, partial texts, commentaries that include translations, children's Bibles, Apocryphal writings, and the Koran, as well. Other bibliographies are usually limited to editions commonly found in academic libraries, but Chamberlin's guide also includes Bibles found in private collections. Overall, this catalogue contains more than five times as many entries of different English translations as two other Bible bibliographies, those by Hill and Herbert, combined. The entries are grouped in 151 categories, and within each category entries are listed in chronological order. The accompanying annotations identify the translator and provide an overview of the contents of each work. The detailed indexes make this bibliography a convenient tool for researchers. Bible scholars, collectors, and rare book dealers will find this catalogue a necessary addition to their libraries.

Mystery Unveiled by Paul C. H. Lim Pdf

Winner of the Sixteenth Century Society's Roland H. Bainton Prize for History or Theology Paul C. H. Lim offers an insightful examination of the polemical debates about the doctrine of the Trinity in seventeenth-century England, showing that the philosophical and theological re-configuration of this doctrine had a significant impact on the politics of religion in the early modern period. Lim's analysis of these heated polemics shows how Trinitarian God-talk became untenable in many ecclesiastical and philosophical circles, leading to the emergence of Unitarianism. He demonstrates that those who continued to uphold Trinitarian doctrine articulated their piety and theological perspectives in an increasingly secularized culture of discourse. Drawing on both unexplored manuscripts and well-known treatises of Continental and English provenance, he uncovers the complex layers of the polemic: from biblical exegesis to reception history of patristic authorities, from popular religious radicalism during the Civil War to Puritan spirituality, from Continental Socinians to English anti-Trinitarians who claimed an independent theological identity, from the notion of the Platonic captivity of primitive Christianity to that of Plato as "Moses Atticus." Among this book's surprising findings are that Anti-Trinitarian sentiment arose in a Puritan ambience in which biblical literalism overrode rationalistic presuppositions, and that theology and philosophy were more closely connected during this period than previously thought. Mystery Unveiled fills a significant lacuna in early modern English intellectual history.
