From F-4 Phantom to A-10 Warthog by Steve Ladd,Steven K. Ladd Pdf
This behind-the-scenes account of a USAF career is “an absorbing read, written with the classic humor fighter pilots seem to have” (Flight Line Book Review). From Baron von Richthofen to Robin Olds, the mystique of the fighter pilot endures. The skill, cunning, and bravery that characterizes this distinctive band of brothers is well known, but there are other dimensions to those who take to the skies to do battle that have not been given the emphasis they deserve—until now. You don’t have to be an aviation aficionado to enjoy Colonel Steve Ladd’s fascinating personal tale, woven around his twenty-eight-year career as a fighter pilot. This extremely engaging account follows a young man from basic pilot training to senior command through narratives that define a unique ethos. From the United States to Southeast Asia, Europe to the Middle East, the amusing and tongue-in-cheek to the deadly serious and poignant, this is the lifelong journey of a fighter pilot. The anecdotes are absorbing, providing an insight into life as an Air Force pilot, but, in this book, as Colonel Ladd stresses, the focus is not on fireworks or stirring tales of derring-do. Instead, this is an articulate and absorbing account of what life is really like among a rare breed of arrogant, cocky, boisterous, and fun-loving young men who readily transform into steely professionals at the controls of a fighter aircraft. “This book will appeal to a variety of readers with its Vietnam War combat stories and accounts of flying the Warthog in Cold War Europe. Fun, flying, international experiences—you won’t want to put it down.” —Aviation News
Poppy is desperate to win the prize for the best costume at Madam Angelwing's annual Honeypot Hill fancy dress party so she asks her cousin Saffron to make one for her. But much to Poppy's disappointment, Saffron says no as she thinks it will not only spoil the fun but also give her young cousin an unfair advantage over the other children. Instead, Saffron suggests a sewing bee for all the village children, which turns out to be great fun, even for the boys. The day of the party arrives at last, but when Madame Angelwing has to choose the winner, she simply can't decide since the costumes are all so wonderful, so she gives each and every child a special prize. So although Poppy doesn't win first prize, she is very happy because she is still a fancy dress princess, along with all her friends.
Seventies survivor Frances Lynn ruthlessly chronicles the psychotic highs and lows of Alice, a young English girl who escapes London at the tail end of the Sixties for a sojourn in San Francisco. She quickly discovers that the psychedelic world of tie-dye and joss sticks belongs to the previous decade when she becomes involved with a glitter daubed, sprawling theatre group, leftovers from the insular Haight-Ashbury crowd. Alice gets sucked in beyond her head, but just when the crazy theatre group's popularity overdoses, she goes over the top and is shipped back to London. By now, the early Seventies are in full decay, as is Alice. She continues her downward slide by falling in obsession with a fragmented member of the Art World. Their exhausting fling, fuelled by a cocktail of opiates is interrupted by repetitive bouts of insanity, like a San Francisco acid flashback. No holds are barred in this frantic saga of drug-fractured psyches - and it's hard to guess who will stagger on into the eighties. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Back Cover Alice was born in a London Hospital during the Year of the Tiger and almost expired from a heavy chest cold but pulled through to face another lifetime thanks to the hospital's Intensive Care unit. After that start, the road went steadily downwards. Author Frances Lynn, herself a survivor of the steaming Seventies, bars no holds and pulls no punches when telling the story of a wayward girl staggering into the drug-infested circles in San Francisco and London on her way to doom and destruction About the Author Frances Lynn was born in London and grew up in Notting Hill Gate. Her first job was at the BBC, but left after a year in order to travel to San Francisco. When she returned to London, she became Britain's bitchiest columnist on the defunct Ritz magazine, simultaneously doing freelance work for Fleet Street papers and the London glossies. Frances Lynn now lives in central London, enjoying life as a professional writer and author.

Fingers: The Man Who Brought Down Irish Nationwide and Cost Us €5.4bn by Richard Curran,Tom Lyons Pdf
Michael Fingleton was an Irish banking legend, the ultimate big money lender. He took Irish Nationwide Building Society from an obscure mortgage provider to a multi-billion euro property-lending casino, leaving the taxpayer to pick up the tab for €5.4 billion when the society eventually went bust. Fingleton earned over €2 million per year and built up a pension fund worth €27 million. But it was his loans to a small group of property developers and the way the society was mismanaged, under the nose of the Financial Regulator that cost Irish citizens so dearly. In Fingers, Tom Lyons and Richard Curran use previously unpublished material to blow open the failings of the society's internal systems and controls, its culture and the dominance of one man. They get inside the organisation and bring startling new revelations about how money was really lent out to a small group of developers, how INBS failed, and what the Financial Regulators knew. Fingers explores: - Fingleton's connections with politics, the media and the powerful - How the society wasn't just a lender but became a player, taking stakes and shares in the profits of the ventures it bankrolled - How Fingleton quaffed vintage wine in the finest restaurants, stayed in five-star hotels and put it all on the society's tab - How ordinary borrowers in arrears were treated ruthlessly, while the mega-rich walked away owing billions to us. Fingers goes to the heart of the state's failure to hold anybody to account for the Irish financial crash. It highlights the need for a proper banking inquiry to explain to the public what went wrong, how, and who is to blame.
