The State of the Prisons in England and Wales by John Howard Pdf

The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with Preliminary Observations, and an Account of Some Foreign Prisons by John Howard (1726-1790) was the first major practical work on prison reform from the standpoint of design, sanitation and methods of operation. Howard embarked on a career of prison reform in 1773, after visiting a local jail in his official capacity as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, where he was appalled not only by the jail's disease-ridden squalor, but by the fact that persons proven innocent, or not formally accused of crime, could still be forcibly detained until they had paid the jailers their customary delivery fees. He suggested to the justices of Bedfordshire that the jailers be paid a salary from county funds in lieu of fees, and was told to find a precedent for this scheme. An exhaustive search of all the counties in England failed to yield even one, but provided Howard with so much evidence of abuse and misery that in 1774 he was able, by testifying before a committee of the House of Commons, to inspire the immediate passage of bills abolishing jailers' fees and calling for improved prison sanitation. Howard then made two tours of Continental jails-- he was particularly impressed by Dutch criminal rehabilitation programs-- and a second round of English prisons, gathering material for the present volume. Its publication resulted in the passage of another bill establishing two penitentiaries modeled on those Howard had seen in Holland, where brutal treatment of prisoners was replaced by solitary confinement, religious instruction and vocational training.--J. Norman.

The Role of Prison in Europe by Tom Vander Beken Pdf

This book discusses the role of the prison in Europe across a divide of over 200 years. Inspired by the travels of the prison reformer John Howard (1726-1790), who visited prisons across Europe in the eighteenth century, it fundamentally reflects on centuries of the practice of locking people up as punishment. Howard travelled across Europe to visit prisons, with a simple method: he travelled and knocked on prison doors on his journey and entered the premises. He then observed the situation in the prison, took notes and left to visit other locations. Howard's influential book The State of the Prisons resulted from his experiences, provoking debate among prison reformers and academics worldwide. Adopting the contemporary methods of prison tourism research, the author follows in Howard's footsteps. He draws on extensive research conducted in prisons across six countries: England, Norway, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Azerbaijan. Howard's reflections are used as a frame to assess contemporary prisons, particularly revolving around the questions of what prisons are for today, and what they should (or should not) be. It will be of great interest to criminologists researching prisons and penology, as well as historians interested in the histories of punishment.

Europe in Prisons by Tom Daems,Luc Robert Pdf

This volume explores the role that European institutions have come to play in regulating national prisons systems. The authors introduce and contribute to advancing a new research agenda in international penology (‘Europe in prisons’) which complements the conventional comparative approach (‘prisons in Europe’). The chapters examine the impact – if any – that institutions such as the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the European Court of Human Rights have had on prison policy throughout Europe. With contributions from a wide range of countries such as Albania, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Norway and Spain, this edited collection offers a wide-ranging and authoritative guide to the effects of European institutions on prison policy.

The Reformist Ideas of Samuel Johnson by Stefka Ritchie Pdf

This book explores what remains an under-studied aspect of Samuel Johnson’s profile as a person and writer – namely, his attitude to social improvement. The interpretive framework provided here is cross-disciplinary, and applies perspectives from social and cultural history, legal history, architectural history and, of course, English literature. This allows Johnson’s writings to be read against the peculiarities of their historical milieu, and reveals Johnson in a new light – as an advocate of social improvement for human betterment. Considering the multiplicity of narrative modes that have been employed, the book points to the blurred boundaries and overlapping between history, testimony and fiction, and argues that a future biography of Samuel Johnson has to recognise that throughout his life he valued the utilitarian aspect of his manifesto as a writer to impart a more charitable attitude in the pursuit of a more caring society.
