Stickley is a name synonymous with style in America. The five Stickley brothers were fully engaged in the furniture industry around the turn of the century and had a huge impact on America's statement of style. Here, for the first time, the representative photos and ideas of all the brothers' work appear together in one volume, to compare and contrast, so that readers might make their own evaluations.

"So Various are the Forms it Assumes" by Two Red Roses Foundation,David M. Cathers,Susan J. Montgomery Pdf

*A detailed look at how America's Arts and Crafts movement impacted the furniture design. Arts and Crafts Furniture features many of the most important furniture makers from the Arts and Crafts era in America, including Charles Rohlfs, Gustav Stickley's Craftsman Workshops, Elbert Hubbard's Roycrofters, the Byrdcliffe colony, the Stickley Brothers, and Greene & Greene. These early twentieth-century makers and designers believed that traditional, high-quality craftsmanship was essential in a time of steadily growing industrialization in America. Color photographs featuring two hundred objects selected from the Two Red Roses Foundation's extensive collection, are presented alongside archival photographs and examinations of their design and fabrication. A special appendix highlights the designers and craftsmen who appear in the book, alongside the history of their firms and working practices.

Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement by Kevin W. Tucker,Gustav Stickley,Beverly Kay Brandt,Sally-Anne Huxtable Pdf

After three decades of Arts and Crafts exhibitions that have surveyed the entire movement or focused on its many regional manifestations, Gustav Stickley, the movement's central figure in the US, now receives his due. This exhibition catalogue, redolent with stunning color photographs of 100-plus selected Stickley pieces, draws its intellectual credibility from essays by six leading scholars of the Arts and Crafts movement: Tucker, Brandt, David Cathers, Joseph Cunningham, Beth Ann Macpherson, and Tommy MacPherson. They examine the cultural and economic circumstances of Stickley's emergence around 1900, the formulation of his business strategies and ideals, the role of Irene Sargent and The Craftsman magazine, the paradoxical nature of the craftsman home, and Stickley's own two homes. Stickley is a large subject, but this catalogue captures the essence of the man and his work. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above; general readers. Grand Rapids by Norma Lewis Pdf

William Haldane opened a cabinet shop in 1836, 14 years before Grand Rapids incorporated. Other furniture companies followed: Berkey and Gay, Widdicomb, Sligh, Hekman, and Phoenix were among those taking advantage of the Grand River for transportation and power, the area's abundant hardwood supply, and a growing immigrant labor pool. The furniture soon attracted national attention. In 1876, the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition proved conclusively that a river town in Michigan had indeed earned the title "Furniture City." Presidents Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower all worked at Grand Rapids-made desks. Fifteen manufacturers joined forces to build 1,000 Handley Page bombers during World War I. The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, at a table made in Grand Rapids. Despite fires, floods, strikes, depressions, and wars, Grand Rapids led the industry until the 1950s and 1960s, when the factories began moving to North Carolina. Today the area, along with nearby Holland and Zeeland, dominates the office furniture industry.
