The Chautauqua Movement (Classic Reprint) by John Heyl Vincent Pdf

Excerpt from The Chautauqua Movement HE task I have taken upon myself is to tell, in a simple way, the story of Chautauqua, - a story of today; without romantic, heroic, or tragic element a story of the people; a story in which the scholars will be interested, because the scholars are a part of the people; a story in which the rich and the refined will be interested, - the rich who are truly refined, and the refined whether rich or poor, -because they believe in the brotherhood of the race and in its high destiny, and are proud to account themselves a part of it. The Natural History of Chautauqua (Classic Reprint) by Vaughan Maccaughey Pdf

Excerpt from The Natural History of Chautauqua The material in this little book is the outgrowth of ten years natural history study and teaching in the Chautauqua region. The material is assembled in this form with the hope that it may be useful to the increasing number of nature-students who are actively interested in the rich and beautiful natural background of Chautauqua. The subject-matter is not designed to take the place of that found in the standard reference books; it is suggestive rather than scientifically exhaustive. In the various lists, for example, only the common and fairly common forms are usually included; rare and adventitious species, although often of extreme scientific interest, are not of particular significance to the beginner in natural history. It is significant that natural history has always been an integral part of the Chautauqua ideal. Wherever people may live, - amidst or far remote from the centers of culture, - Nature is omnipresent as the universal background of their lives. Natural history is the most cosmopolitan of the cultural elements; it is not nationalized, like literature, nor racial, like the languages, nor sectarianized, as is theology, nor provincialized, as is history. The natural history of any locality, no matter how apparently mediocre and humble, is a clean-cut epitome of the outstanding laws of the universe. This book is based upon the fundamental proposition of the nature-study idea, namely, that happiness may be derived from an intimate and sympathetic knowledge of the common things of our out-of-doors. A Paper About Chautauqua and Its Teachings (Classic Reprint) by Emily Raymond Pdf

Excerpt from A Paper About Chautauqua and Its Teachings Knowing that there is an increasing desire to understand the Chautauqua idea and aim which has taken captive the hearts of many thousand pilgrims who for ten consecutive summers have journeyed to this Mecca, I will attempt in these few pages to give some prominent features of this unique assembly. It is an educational movement, combining sacred and secular knowledge, taking the teachings and doctrines of the Holy Bible as the chief corner stone. In other words, Chautauqua seeks to establish the relation of Christianity and of culture as they appear in our individual as well as in the national life. All persons are concerned in that which shapes the life, the destiny and the greatness of the nation, of which we all form a part. This great movement, which has caused from every part of the wide world the inquiry, "What is this Chautauqua?" Chautauqua Library of English History and Literature, Vol. 3 by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR Pdf

Excerpt from Chautauqua Library of English History and Literature, Vol. 3: The Wars of the Roses For the period of English history treated in this volume we are fortunate in possessing an unrivaled interpreter in our great dramatic poet, Shakespeare. A regular sequence of historical plays exhibit to us not only the general character of each successive reign, but nearly the whole chain of leading events, from the days of Richard II. to the death of Richard III. at Bosworth. Following the guidance of such a master mind, we realize for ourselves the men and actions of the period in a way we cannot do in any other epoch. And this is the more important, as the age itself, especially toward the close, is one of the most obscure in English history. During the period of the Wars of the Roses, we have, comparatively speaking, very few contemporary narratives of what took place, and any thing like a general history of the times was not written till a much later date. But the doings of that stormy age - the sad calamities endured by kings - the sudden changes of fortune in great men - the glitter of chivalry and the horrors of civil war - all left a deep impression upon the mind of the nation, which was kept alive by vivid traditions of the past at the time that our great dramatist wrote. Hence, notwithstanding the scantiness of records and the meagerness of ancient chronicles, we have singularly little difficulty in understanding the spirit and character of the times. - Gairdner. History the United States by Edward Everett Hale Pdf

Excerpt from History the United States: Written for the Chautauqua Reading Circles Of the Revolution, of its causes, its methods, and its results, we certainly know much more than Judge Marshall knew, or even George Washington, or any of the men of their times. The governments in possession of European archives are no longer coy about opening to students the papers in their pos session. We know, for instance, that George the Third was his own enemy, and the enemy of Great Britain. We know something of the divided councils of England, and of the causes which led to division; of the policies of France and Spain and the other countries of Europe. We are able to make a study much more complete than was in the power of Mr. Botta, Mr. Grahame, Judge Marshall, or any other of the earlier historians.
