The Story of Congregationalism in Surrey (Classic Reprint) by Edward E. Cleal Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of Congregationalism in Surrey Nearly fifty years ago the Rev. John Waddington was asked by the newly-formed Surrey Congregational Union to prepare a history of its churches. Much history is made in half a century, especially in London and its vicinity, and for a long while it has been felt by the Union that the time had come to write anew the fascinating story. Three years ago the Executive entrusted the task into my hands. That task I have endeavoured to perform to the best of my ability. It has not been an easy work, but it has been a labour of love. Waddington in his preface refers to the great difficulty of obtaining full and authentic local information respecting our churches. I, too, have often found that only the baldest facts were accessible. But a greater difficulty still has been the task of selecting and condensing within some four hundred and fifty pages material enough to fill half a dozen similar volumes. The tale of such a church as the Pilgrim Fathers' requires a volume to itself, and the same is true of such churches as Kingston, Guildford, Dorking, Mortlake and many others. History of English Congregationalism (Classic Reprint) by Robert William Dale Pdf

Excerpt from History of English Congregationalism Not very long before his death, my father spoke to me of the work that he was leaving unfinished, and said that he wished his History of English Congregationalism to be published, if it could be done. How the book was first planned, and how the plan was altered, has been told elsewhere, and there is no need to repeat the story. The book began as a manual; but it grew in size and scope - as books are apt to grow; and it would not be compressed into a couple of hundred pages. It was to have been written for the Congregational Union; but the author preferred to speak for himself, free from all responsibility to others. During the later years of his life he gave to the task what strength and leisure were left him. Much of the ground to be traversed was already familiar. Church history, and the history of the Congregational Churches in particular, had been his lifelong study. The earliest of his public utterances to attract attention had dealt with the Ejection of 1662. And in the years that followed - the period of energy and strength - he had set himself to revive and to enforce the theory of the Church on which the Congregational polity is built. History of Congregationalism and Memorials of the Churches in Norfolk and Suffolk (Classic Reprint) by John Browne Pdf

Excerpt from History of Congregationalism and Memorials of the Churches in Norfolk and Suffolk This book owes its origin to the generosity of Mr. D. H. Goddard, late of Newcastle, now of Chester-le-Street, who, at the meeting of the Congregational Union at Ipswich in 1872, offered a premium for the production of a History of Congregationalism in Norfolk and Suffolk. The execution of the work was, without solicitation on my part, confided to me. Living at a distance from libraries, I have to a great extent been dependent on my own collection of MSS., books, sermons, and tracts; almost all those which are quoted, except otherwise indicated, being in my own possession: but, whilst the work has been passing through the press, I have made considerable additions of interesting and important matter from the Record Office, and the British Museum. I am indebted to S. W. Rix, Esq., of Beccles, for the use of his collections illustrative of the history of Congregationalism in these two counties, and for the encouragement he has, for many years, given me to attempt such a work as the present; to the Rev. Geo. Gould, of Norwich, for the use of MSS. which have been very helpful to me; and to the Rev. T. W. Davids, of Upton, for contributions and counsels which have been of great value. My best thanks are also due to the Rev. T. Hunter, for affording me facilities for consulting books and MSS. in Dr. Williams' Library; and to those pastors of churches who have allowed me to copy, or make extracts from, their several church books. I have taken these, rather than any existing descriptions of the churches, as the basis of this history. The history of the Baptist Churches is more of a fragment than I desired; it is nearly complete to the close of last century, but sufficient information with regard to many later formed churches has not been supplied. The facts here carefully gathered together may hereafter furnish occasion for a more general view of East Anglian Congregationalism, which the limits of this volume prevent me from adding. A Weaver-Poet and the Plague by Scott Oldenburg Pdf

William Muggins, an impoverished but highly literate weaver-poet, lived and wrote in London at the turn of the seventeenth century, when few of his contemporaries could even read. A Weaver-Poet and the Plague’s microhistorical approach uses Muggins’s life and writing, in which he articulates a radical vision of a commonwealth founded on labor and mutual aid, as a gateway into a broader narrative about London’s “middling sort” during the plague of 1603. In debt, in prison, and at odds with his livery company, Muggins was forced to move his family from the central London neighborhood called the Poultry to the far poorer and more densely populated parish of St. Olave’s in Southwark. It was here, confined to his home as that parish was devastated by the plague, that Muggins wrote his minor epic, London’s Mourning Garment, in 1603. The poem laments the loss of life and the suffering brought on by the plague but also reflects on the social and economic woes of the city, from the pains of motherhood and childrearing to anxieties about poverty, insurmountable debt, and a system that had failed London’s most vulnerable. Part literary criticism, part microhistory, this book reconstructs Muggins’s household, his reading, his professional and social networks, and his proximity to a culture of radical religion in Southwark. Featuring an appendix with a complete version of London’s Mourning Garment, this volume presents a street-level view of seventeenth-century London that gives agency and voice to a class that is often portrayed as passive and voiceless.

The Hillsong Movement Examined by Tanya Riches,Tom Wagner Pdf

This interdisciplinary volume brings together leading writers and thinkers to provide a critique of a broad range of topics related to Hillsong Church. Hillsong is one of the most influential, visible, and (in some circles) controversial religious organizations/movements of the past thirty years. Although it has received significant attention from both the academy and the popular press, the vast majority of the scholarship lacks the scope and nuance necessary to understand the complexity of the movement, or its implications for the social, cultural, political, spiritual, and religious milieus it inhabits. This volume begins to redress this by filling important gaps in knowledge as well as introducing different audiences to new perspectives. In doing so, it enriches our understanding of one of the most influential Christian organizations of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
