Romanesque Art by Victoria Charles,Klaus Carl Pdf

In art history, the term ‘Romanesque art’ distinguishes the period between the beginning of the 11th and the end of the 12th century. This era showed a great diversity of regional schools each with their own unique style. In architecture as well as in sculpture, Romanesque art is marked by raw forms. Through its rich iconography and captivating text, this work reclaims the importance of this art which is today often overshadowed by the later Gothic style.

Romanesque Architecture and Its Artistry in Central Europe, 900-1300 by Herbert Schutz Pdf

This book seeks to offer a detailed survey of the Romanesque Architectural style preserved in Central Europe. It traces developments of the style from earliest examples of the post-Carolingian period to the height of sophistication during the transition to Gothic. It begins with a survey of the remains and reconstructions of the palaces of the mighty. It then offers a selection of castles, both as ruins or restored facilities as they can be found in Germany, Austria and Alsace. Where possible the emphasis rests on seeking out the artistic ornamentation with which the builders enhanced the structures. The major part of the book deals with church architecture, where the structures are discussed as monumental statements of the faith with consideration given to their embellishments on towers and facades, friezes and apses, portals and colonnades, columns and capitals, screens, reliefs, fonts and statuary, wall painting and stained glass. Inescapable is the conclusion that these fortresses of God are sermons in stone in which the worshipper finds himself within the Imperium Christianum.

The book offers a general introduction to the Gothic period and discusses the primary characteristics of the style, along with the commonly used techniques and materials. Romanesque Architectural Criticism by Tina Waldeier Bizzarro Pdf

This history of Romanesque architectural criticism examines seventeenth through early nineteenth-century commentary on medieval architecture and the naming of the Romanesque style. From the time of Giorgio Vasari's Vite (1550) through circa 1818, the portmanteau Gothic often served as a blanket and dismissive term encompassing any non-classical architecture from the disappearance to the revival of the classical style in Renaissance Italy. A study of Romanesque criticism reveals the various stages in the understanding and naming of Romanesque architecture. This consolidation of literature on Romanesque architecture seeks to break ground and to prompt others to refine its conclusions.

The Quest for an Appropriate Past in Literature, Art and Architecture by Anonim Pdf

This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of “antiquity” and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in the period of 1400–1700. Contributors include: Barbara Arciszewska, Bianca De Divitiis, Karl Enenkel, Hubertus Günther, Thomas Haye, Harald Hendrix, Stephan Hoppe, Marc Laureys, Frédérique Lemerle, Coen Maas, Anne-Françoise Morel, Kristoffer Neville, Konrad Ottenheym, Yves Pauwels, Christian Peters, Christoph Pieper, David Rijser, Bernd Roling, Nuno Senos, Paul Smith, Pieter Vlaardingerbroek, and Matthew Walker.
