The Strife of Systems by Nicholas Rescher Pdf

The disagreement of philosophers is notorious. In this book, Rescher develops a theory that accounts for this conflict and shows how the basis for philosophical disagreement roots in divergent 'cognitive values'-values regarding matters such as importance, centrality, and priority. In light of this analysis, Rescher maintains that, despite this inevitable discord, a skeptical or indifferentist reaction to traditional philosophy is not warranted, seeing that genuine value-conflicts are at issue. He argues that philosophy is an important and worthwhile enterprise, notwithstanding its inability to achieve rationally constrained consensus on the issues. Given the nature of the enterprise, consensus is not a realistic goal, and failure to achieve it is not a defect. Accordingly, Rescher argues against the revisionist views proposed by Richard Rorty and Robert Nozick. His discussions are devoted to providing a clear view of why philosophical problems arise and how philosophers address them.

Nicholas Rescher stands as a major figure in American Philosophy today. His philosophical contribution, ranging over fifty years, is marked by a profound respect for the fate of the human condition in a world of unparalleled scientific and technological innovation. This work brings under the centrally unifying theme of 'rationality' some of the issues on values and personal responsibility he has addressed during his long and distinguished career. The book is intended to illustrate the synthesis of Rescher’s thinking relative to these ideas, as expounded upon for many decades.

The Intelligible World by Wilbur Marshall Urban Pdf

First published in 2002. This is Volume XIV of seventeen in the Library of Philosophy series on Metaphysics. Written in 1929, this book is on metaphysics and value in the intelligible world, which states that there are only two kinds of philosophies: those that find the world ultimately meaningful and intelligible and those that do not. The present book claims to belong to the first of these, and as such to be apart, however modest, of the Great Tradition in philosophy.

On the Nature of Philosophy and Other Philosophical Essays by Nicholas Rescher Pdf

This book continues Rescher’s longstanding practice of publishing groups of philosophical essays. Notwithstanding their thematic diversity, these discussions exhibit a uniformity of method in addressing philosophical issues via a mixture of historical contextualization, analytical scrutiny, and common-sensical concern. Their interest, such as it is, lies not just in what they do but in how they do it.

Rethinking Imagination by Gillian Robinson,John F. Rundell Pdf

Pulling together a collection of richly informative essays Rethinking Imagination addresses competing sets of ideas, oscillating between the modern and post-modern, creativity and sublimity, progress and apocalypse, democracy and redemption Enlightenment and Romanticism and reason and imagination. Aiming to thematise these debates from the perspective of the imagination, Rethinking Imagination takes two directions. The first addresses a socio-cultural interpretation in which the distinguishing figures of modernity can be viewed as continuing differentiation and autonomatization of spheres and systems that goes well beyond the divisions of labour. The second is an ongoing philosophical discourse about the imagination and its relation to reason which has been present since Enlightenment. Divided into two separate yet interconnected parts, this book is a highly significant collection of essays and a valuable contribution to the field of philosophical and socio-cultural sociology. It is a key book for undergraduate, postgraduate and academic researchers.
