Computation Structures by Stephen A. Ward,Robert H. Halstead Pdf

Developed as the text for the basic computer architecture course at MIT, Computation Structures integrates a thorough coverage of digital logic design with a comprehensive presentation of computer architecture. It contains a wealth of information for those who design computers or work with computer systems, spanning the entire range of topics from analog circuit design to operating systems. Ward and Halstead seek to demystify the construction of computing hardware by illustrating systematically how it is built up from digital circuits through higher level components to processors and memories, and how its design is affected by its intended uses.Computation Structures is unusually broad in scope, considering many real world problems and tradeoff decisions faced by practicing engineers. These difficult choices are confronted and given careful attention throughout the book.Topics addressed include the digital abstraction; digital representations and notation; combinational devices and circuits; sequence and state; synthesis of digital systems; finite state machines; control structures and disciplines; performance measures and tradeoffs; communication; interpretation; microinterpreter architecture; microprogramming and microcode; single sequence machines; stack architectures; register architectures; reduced instruction set computers; memory architectures; processes and processor multiplexing; process synchronization; interrupts, priorities, and real time; directions and trends.Stephen A. Ward and Robert H. Halstead are both Associate Professors of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at MIT. Computation Structures is included in the MIT Electrical Engineering and Computer Science series.

Vectorization of Computer Programs with Applications to Computational Fluid Dynamics by Wolfgang Gentzsch Pdf

The scope of the present book is to offer the most efficient tools for the vectorization of serial computer programs. Here, by vectorization we understand the adaptation of computer programs to the special architecture of modern available vector computers to exploit fully their potential, which will often result in remarkable performance improvements. The book is written primarily for users working in the various fields of computational physics, for scientists as well as for programmers running their jobs on a vector computer. The text may, however, also be of value to those who are interested in numerical algorithms. Although the examples discussed in chapter 9 have been taken from Computational Fluid Dynamics, the numerical methods are well-known, and are applied in many fields of Computational Physics. The book is divided into four parts. After a short introduction which outlines the limits of conventional serial computers in contrast to the possibilities offered by the new vector machines, the second part is addressed to the discussion of some main features of existing computer architectures. We restrict ourselves to the vector computers CRAY-1S and CDC-CYBER 205, although, in the meantime, many vector and parallel computers and array processors are available such as DENELCOR's Heterogeneous Element Processor (HEP), ICL's Distributed Array Processor (DAP), SPERRY UNIVAC's Array Processing System (APS), STAR TECHNOLOGIES ST-l00, FLOATING POINT SYSTEMS' Array Processor (FPS), FUJITSU's FACOM VP-l00 and VP-200, HITACHI's Integrated Array Processor (lAP), HITACHI's S 810/10 and S 810/20 and others.

Structures of Computing by Egon Börger,Vincenzo Gervasi Pdf

Structures of Computing explains the behavioral meaning of fundamental concepts of computing from a practical viewpoint and in generic terms, unrestricted by specific computing devices or programming languages. To compute is understood as processing structures by a set of cooperating agents each of which executes an algorithm assigned to it and interacts with the other agents. Part I of the book defines the conceptual constituents of interactive processes: (i) data, i.e. structured objects with associated properties, relations and functions the algorithmic processes operate upon, (ii) basic operations that affect the data in single execution steps, and (iii) control mechanisms that determine the combination of single steps in multi-agent computations where the interaction happens via communication or other forms of data sharing. Part II analyses these constituents concerning (i) methods to achieve process correctness (inspection, experimental validation, reasoning), (ii) principal computational paradigms (architectures, programming styles, communication structures, control patterns from sequential and reflective to concurrent, mixed synchronous/asynchronous and data flow control), and (iii) complexity (power and limits of computing structures). The book is mainly addressed to students and professionals who want to understand the conceptual foundation of computing. It does not assume any specific programming experience but only a basic understanding of what are mechanically executable processes and their descriptions. Any unnecessary formalism is thus avoided, and definitions are formulated as much as possible in natural language, using common mathematical notation only where needed to prevent ambiguities. Numerous examples and exercises serve as comprehension checkpoints.

High Performance Computing for Computational Science - VECPAR 2002 by José M.L.M. Palma,Jack Dongarra,Vicente Hernández,A. Augusto Sousa,Marina Waldén Pdf

The 5th edition of the VECPAR series of conferences marked a change of the conference title. The full conference title now reads VECPAR 2002 — 5th Int- national Conference on High Performance Computing for Computational S- ence. This re?ects more accurately what has been the main emphasis of the conference since its early days in 1993 – the use of computers for solving pr- lems in science and engineering. The present postconference book includes the best papers and invited talks presented during the three days of the conference, held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Portugal), June 26–28 2002. The book is organized into 8 chapters, which as a whole appeal to a wide research community, from those involved in the engineering applications to those interested in the actual details of the hardware or software implementation, in line with what, in these days, tends to be considered as Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). The book comprises a total of 49 papers, with a prominent position reserved for the four invited talks and the two ?rst prizes of the best student paper competition.

Computers and Mathematics by Erich Kaltofen,Stephen M. Watt Pdf

Advances in computer technology have had a tremendous impact on mathematics in the last two decades. In June of 1989, an international conference was held at MIT, bringing together mathematicians and computer scientists, to survey the work that has been done in computational mathematics, to report recent results in this field, and to discuss research directions as well as educational issues. This book presents a fascinating collection of contributions on topics ranging from computational algebra, and parallel computing, to mathematics education. Mathematicians interested in the computational aspects of their discipline as well as computer scientists interested in mathematical applications will enjoy the integrative view provided by this book.
