Prostitution is often viewed in feminist theory as the sine qua non of the female condition under patriarchy. Frequently cited as 'the absolute embodiment of patriarchal male privilege' (Kesler, 2002: 19), the highly gendered nature of commercial sex appears to offer a graphic example of male domination, exercised through the medium of sexuality. This construction is, however, as convincing as it is problematic. By reviewing the work of Shelia Jeffries, Judith Walkowitz, Gail Pheterson, Shannon Bell, Jo Doezema, Kamala Kempadoo and Jo Phoenix, I aim to illustrate that feminist writers, by assuming different theoretical lenses, offer diverse interpretations of the subject of prostitution - both in terms of women's subjective positions and as a problem of a particular type. To understand the consequences of this development I want to explain the term “sexualization of society”, which describes the constant (or growing) presence of sexuality in public, in social perception and consciousness of the people. It also refers to the focus or emphasis on sexuality within a broader context and viewing an object under the sexual point of view or in terms of sexuality. I want to analyze if a sexualization of society as an example in the case of “mainstreaming of pornography” really has taken place and in what way this is reflected in pornography and prostitution. Therefore I will also consider the changes in the public opinion towards pornography and I will compare it to prostitution and its role in our society.

Prostitution played an important part in structuring gender relations in medieval Germany. Prostitutes were often viewed as an example of the extreme female sinfulness which all women risked falling into, yet their social role was also seen as vital to the unmarried men for whom they provided a sexual outlet. Prostitution and Subjectivity in Late Medieval Germany is the first full-length study of medieval prostitution to focus primarily on how gender discourse shaped the lives of prostitutes themselves. Based on three legal case studies from the late medieval Empire, Prostitutes and Subjectivity in Late Medieval Germany examines constructions of subjectivity between 1400 and 1500. This period saw the rapid rise of tolerated prostitution across much of western Europe and the emergence of the public brothel as a central institution in the regulation of social order, followed by its equally rapid suppression from the early 1500s. By analysing how individuals interacted with cultural discourses surrounding the body, sexuality, and sin, the book explores how the concepts which defined prostitution in the Middle Ages shaped individual lives, and how individuals were able - or not - to exert agency, both within the circumstances of their own lives, and in response to official attempts to regulate sexual behaviour.

A student union recently estimated that “40,000 students are now prostitutes in France.” The primary cause is the growing precariousness and high cost of student life. This study, carried out in 2006-2007, is a vivid description of the novelty of this form of prostitution. It is practiced discreetly, occasionally, independently, via the Internet, mainly by young female students who call themselves “escorts.” The book’s findings are twofold. While student prostitution is first and foremost linked to a precarious economic situation and low-income parents, it can sometimes be experienced as a means of emancipating oneself from a framed sexuality, from a life that’s too smooth, or of taking “revenge” on the myth of Prince Charming. Also, this type of prostitution differs from so-called “traditional” prostitution—selection of clients, “friendly” atmosphere, socialization through generational and social class differences. The fact remains that for these students, the “choice” of becoming a prostitute is dependent on a series of social and representative breakdowns, frequently linked to the power of money, the attraction of certain material signs of wealth, and also to a double domination: masculine and socio-economic.
