The Teaching of Modern Languages (Classic Reprint) by Leopold Bahlsen Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages The question of methods has doubtless occupied the attention of teachers as long as language teaching has existed. There was a time, however, when there was no dispute regarding those questions which are to-day most generally discussed; when each language teacher, apart from the slight peculiarities of his own individuality, pursued the same course. In this place we are interested merely in foreign-language teaching; and in our discussion we must begin at a point before civilized people, in the accepted meaning of the word, inhabited North America. There was at that time in the Old World but one foreign language in the schools: Latin. It was not until later that Greek was added; it was not until after the destruction of Constantinople by the Turks (1453) that highly educated Greeks fled toward the West, taking with them their language and the remains of their art. Latin became thereafter the common language of the educated, of the learned. Whoever would rise to higher refinement, whoever would enjoy the beauties of the classics, was obliged to learn the ancient languages, - there was no other possibility. And the purpose of such study indicated at once and in a perfectly natural manner the way to be followed - and the means of making the start in this way. Students wished to understand the classics. Without further ado they took up the various authors and began to decipher them, gradually becoming at home in the language. In the Latin schools Cicero was put into the hands of the beginners. The Teaching of Modern Languages by Cloudesley Brereton Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages: With Special Reference to Big Towns AT the present moment the remodelling and rearrangement in our big towns of the whole system of education, and especially of that part of it known as secondary, gives us a unique Opportunity for putting the teaching of modern languages on a proper basis. NO doubt the same Opportunity for reform exists, to a certain extent, in the country, but for two reasons I have decided to confine my remarks mainly to the towns: first, because it is in the large agglomerations of population that the problem may be seen in its most complete form, and secondly, because a good many of the counties have hardly touched as yet the question of the supply and organisa tion of secondary education, and so afortz'orz' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The subject-matter is surely not at fault with reference to the pres ent abnormal position this branch of learning holds in the estimation of scholars. Obloquy has been thrown upon it be cause Of unjust prejudices in certain 'cases; in others be cause the new-comer does not tread the accustomed ruts of a traditional creed. The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages by Henry Gibson Atkins Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages: In School and University The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions of the best theory and practice in English education of to-day. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. No artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by Modern Language Association Pdf

Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 3 With the learning oi languages it must be the other way. The aural way of entry is far more graphic and effective than that of learning out of books: in the one the personal element is stronger, in the other the scholarly treatment is supreme the one is the commerce of the market, the other the practice of the student and the Don. The present teaching of classics is as though no man ever spoke them; indeed, this really is, in a sense, true. I doubt whether one schoolboy in a hundred knows that there were two 'latins'-the book form in classical manner of Cicero, and the popular form of Terence - the one the language of the law courts, and the other the common talk of the street. I don't think that any English boy believes that Latin was spoken as we English talk to one another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How to Teach and Learn Modern Languages Successfully, Especially French, and Its Teaching at School (Classic Reprint) by Francis Lichtenberger Pdf

Excerpt from How to Teach and Learn Modern Languages Successfully, Especially French, and Its Teaching at School I confess my weakness. I also had deter mined to write a grammar - a grammar that should throw into the shade everything that had been previously achieved - but the sight of the voluminous catalogue disheartened me; in short, it convinced me that success in that line was impossible. I threw my pen away in despair. But, on examining the list of French works once more, an idea occurred to me, whether a good one or no, I leave to others to decide. Finding that books which give practical hints as to the method of teaching modern languages are not to be found in the said catalogue, I determined Upon supplying that want by giving, in the present little volume, my own experience, not only in teaching, but also in learning several languages, and pointing out in this manner, to teachers and students, how to teach, and how to learn modern languages.
