The Theme of Recompense in Matthew's Gospel by Blaine Charette Pdf

Matthew's theology of the Spirit has received scant scholarly attention, a regrettable oversight since the evangelist is careful to note that the eschatological redemption described in his Gospel is the direct result of the activity of God's Spirit. Matthew's narrative of God's restoring work, which begins with Jesus and continues through his followers, is informed by, even as it extends, the larger biblical narrative concerning God's creative, redemptive, and restorative work at the centre of which stands his Spirit, his active presence. As the study elaborates upon the broad sweep of Matthew's interest in the Spirit, the operation of the Spirit is examined in relation to the three theological categories of christology, soteriology, and ecclesiology.

God with Us by Mark Allan Powell Pdf

In successive chapters, Matthew's understanding of mission, worship, teaching, stewardship, and social justice are described in such a way as to assist the reader in understanding the theology of Matthew as a whole. Powell inquires into the direction and thrust of Matthew's Gospel in categories related to pastoral theology rather than systematic theology.

The Meaning and Uses of βασιλεία in the Gospel of Matthew by Tobias Ålöw Pdf

Contrary to the prevailing view that βασιλεία is a verbal noun signifying God’s rule, this study demonstrates how the term’s pragmatic range in Matthew’s Gospel covers both five distinct types of use and their integration into a coherent concept. The study, which is the first to examine all occurrences of βασιλεία in the First Gospel from the perspective of semantic monosemy, extends and enhances our appreciation of the Matthean Zentralbegriff, and engenders a more accurate apprehension of the nature and aims of the Matthean narrative and the theological views it conveys.

Matthew’s New David at the End of Exile by Nicholas G. Piotrowski Pdf

Matthew crowds more Old Testament quotations and allusions into the prologue than anywhere else in his gospel. In this volume, Nicholas G. Piotrowski demonstrates the narratological and rhetorical effects of such frontloading. Particularly, seven formula-quotations constellate to establish a redemptive-historical setting inside of which the rest of the narrative operates. This setting is defined by Old Testament expectations for David’s great son to end Israel’s exile and rule the nations. Piotrowski contends that the rhetorical effect of this intertextual storytelling was to provide the Matthean community with an identity—in a contentious atmosphere—in terms of God’s historical design for the ages, now fulfilled in Jesus and his followers.

Matthew's Bible by M. J. J. Menken Pdf

What type of Old Testament text did Matthew use as editor of his Gospel? On the one hand, the editorially inserted fulfilment quotations with their peculiar textual form may be expected to represent Matthew's biblical text. On the other hand, the remaining OT quotations are mainly Septuagintal, and it is often assumed that Matthew reinforced the Septuagintal character of the quotations which he found in his sources. In the first part of this study, the fulfilment quotations are examined. Their textual form is best explained as a Septuagint text that was revised to make it better agree with the Hebrew and to improve the quality of its Greek; the evangelist took these quotations from a continuous text. In the second part, Matthew's remaining OT quotations are investigated. If Matthew borrows quotations from his sources, he does not adjust them to the LXX but he simply copies them or edits them in his usual way; if he inserts quotations into his sources, he makes use of his revised Septuagint. On the whole, this revised Septuagint seems to have been "Matthew's Bible".

The Branch by Preston T. Massey Pdf

The thesis of the book may be stated simply: it is an argument based upon the four prophetic texts of Jer 23:5; Zech 3:8; 6:12; and Isa 4:2 as a foundational pattern for the four Gospels. These four prophetic texts, it will be argued, mention a King Branch, a Servant Branch, a Man/Priest Branch, and a Lord God Branch. This study seeks to show how Matthew presents Jesus as the King Branch, Mark as the Servant Branch, Luke as the Priest/Man Branch, and John as the Lord God Branch. Consideration will also be given to explore the ramification of the four living Beings as described in Rev 4:6-7. Given the sum total of this sequence of literary facts, the conclusion of this book will raise a number of possible implications. One of these implications will offer the conclusion that the four evangelists could not have written their four Gospels solely on their own human unaided efforts.

When Will These Things Happen? by Alistair I. Wilson Pdf

Was the historical Jesus a preacher of imminent apocalyptic judgment or altogether a 'non-eschatological' teacher? Despite the popularity of both of these extreme portraits in contemporary scholarship, Wilson demonstrates a via media, in which Jesus, viewed especially through the window of Matthew 21-25, is both prophet and sage, but preeminently a judge during his ministry, in his invisible coming against Jerusalem in AD70, and at God's final assize. An important contribution. --Craig Blomberg, Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Denver Seminary In the crowded field of Matthean studies, this book offers something new, a discussion of the theme of judgment in Matthew 21-25, the account of Jesus' confrontation with the Jerusalem authorities. Dr Wilson is well abreast of current scholarship, but not afraid to take an independent line, not least in his robust defense of the view that reference to the 'coming of the Son of Man' refers not to the parousia but to the imminent vindication of the rejected Messiah. This exegesis enables him to link ch. 24 closely with the preceding dialogue and diatribe and to offer a satisfyingly coherent interpretation of the whole 'Jerusalem' section of the gospel which precedes the passion narrative. Over against Marcus Borg's non-eschatological Jesus, Wilson shows convincingly that Matthew's Jesus had a clear eye to the future, looking both to coming events in Palestinian history for his own vindication on the world stage and also to a more ultimate judgment in which he would play the leading role. Whether or not other scholars agree with Wilson's conclusions, this is the sort of careful exegetical scholarship which is needed to carry constructive discussion forward. --R. T. France, formerly Principal, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford Alistair Wilson has written a study that reveals first-class scholarship. He demonstrates that he is fully abreast of issues that are currently being discussed. In his interactions he is tactful, serene, and persuasive. While applauding the views of others, he nevertheless shows his difference from them by carefully demonstrating, on the basis of Matthew's Gospel, that Jesus indeed is judge both in the first century and at the consummation. This book is an excellent addition to evangelical research that champions a high view of Scripture. --Simon J. Kistemaker, Professor of New Testament Emeritus, Reformed Theological Seminary Alistair Wilson's monograph goes right to the heart of contemporary debate concerning the role of Jesus by drawing attention to the motif of judgment in his role as prophet and sage that so impressed the Evangelist Matthew. His fresh study of judgment in this Gospel shows that the early church was far removed from seeing in him the non-eschatological teacher of the late twentieth-century 'Jesus seminar.' This is an important scholarly contribution to the ongoing study of how Jesus was seen and understood by his contemporaries with considerable significance for how we ought to understand him today. --I. Howard Marshall, Emeritus Professor of New Testament Exegesis and Honorary Research Professor, University of Aberdeen Alistair Wilson is a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. He has taught New Testament at Highland Theological College in Dingwall, Scotland, and currently serves as Principal of Dumisani Theological Institute in South Africa.

God Will Judge Each One According to Works by Kyoung-Shik Kim Pdf

This monograph provides a fresh perspective on judgment according to works by challenging both the majority scholarly view and the new perspective advocated by E. P. Sanders, James D. G. Dunn and N. T. Wright. Employing intertextuality and early Jewish mediation of scripture, this study examines the idea of judgment according to works with reference to Psalm 62:13 in early Jewish literature and the New Testament. The originality of this study is to highlight the significance of Psalm 62:13 in the context of judgment according to works and to argue that the texts dealing with judgment according to works in the New Testament are to be understood as interpretations of Psalm 62:13 and its broad context.

The Gospel of Matthew by John Paul Heil Pdf

The Gospel of Matthew encourages and inspires its audience to practice the true, authentic, and holistic worship required for believers in Jesus to live in the kingdom of heaven. In accordance with all that Jesus taught and exemplified regarding authentic worship, believers are invited to complement their worship of God by worshiping and praying to Jesus as God’s beloved Son, who represents “God with us.” They are also invited to complement their ritualistic worship, especially the baptism and Eucharist instituted for them by Jesus, with an ethical worship that extends to others, especially to disciples, children, and “the least ones” with whom Jesus identifies himself, the mercy God desires for a holistic worship. Indeed, a compassionate mercy toward all is the distinctive and noteworthy hallmark that characterizes the theme of worship in the kingdom of heaven, according to the Gospel of Matthew.

A Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew by Craig S. Keener Pdf

This excellent commentary on Matthew offers a unique interpretive approach that focuses on the socio-historical context of the Gospel and the nature of Matthew's exhortation to his first-century Christian audience. By merging a careful study of Matthew's Gospel in relation to the social context of the ancient Mediterranean world with a detailed look at what we know of first-century Jewish-Christian relations, Craig Keener uncovers significant insights into the Gospel not found in any other Matthew commentary. In addition, Keener's commentary is a useful discipleship manual for the church. His unique approach recaptures the full "shock effect" of Jesus' teachings in their original context and allows Matthew to make his point with greater narrative artistry. Keener also brings home the total impact of Matthew's message, including its clear portrait of Jesus and its call for discipleship, both to the Gospel's ancient readers and to believers today.

Mysticism in the Gospel of John by Jey Kanagaraj Pdf

This is the first detailed study of Johannine mysticism against a Palestinian Jewish background has been previously undertaken. This book investiages whether there was a "mystical" practice in first-century Palestine and whether John can be better understood in the light of such practice, if there was any. In analysis, two strands of Jewish mysticism, the early forms of Ma`aseh Merkabah and of Ma`aseh Bereshit, emerge as existing in first-century Palestine. While the former narrates by means of Ezek. 1 the experience of seeing God in His kingly glory, the latter describes the same expereince by using Gen. 1. This book consists of three parts. Part one analyses Hellenistic mysticism as expressed by the Hermetica and Hellenistic-Jewish mysticism as presented by Philo. Part two traces the important elements of Merkabah mysticism from the later Hekhalot literature and the Jewish and Christian writings belonging to 2 cent. BCE - 1 cent. CE by defining the term "mysticism" in terms of the fourteen aspects of Jewish mysticism, an exegetical study of seven themes is undertaken in Part Three. The study shows that the conceptual parallels in John with Hellenistic mysticism and Hellenistic-Jewish mysticism are very slender, but indicates John's polemical motive against the Merkabah mystics of his time. He calls them to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, by proclaiming that the divine glory, claimed by them to be revealed in human-like form on the throne, is now visible in the historical person, Jesus, particularly in his death on the Cross. Thus Jewish Throne-mysticism seems to have been reinterpreted by John as Cross-mysticism.
