The Theology of Renewal for His Church by Douglas G. Bushman Pdf

Almost sixty years after Vatican II, the question of its interpretation is as lively as ever. While numerous theologies of renewal are advanced, conspicuously absent is any serious erudition of the text taken by Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI as the hermeneutical key to understanding the Council's goal and method, namely, Paul VI's encyclical, Ecclesiam Suam. This study corrects this inattention and proposes that Pope Paul's "logic of renewal" is so profoundly a dimension of divine revelation and of the Church's life that it is not just one theology of renewal among many, but the theology of renewal. It is thus the key to understanding the Council's authentic pastoral character. The "logic of renewal" sets personal, spiritual metanoia as the center path of renewal, preceded by the path of doctrinal penetration, which assures that renewal is faithful to God, and complemented by the path of reinvigorated mission, which is the fruit of conversion. As the first post-Christendom ecumenical council, Vatican II addressed the question: What does it mean to be the Church of Christ at this point in history? Its answer: Become what you are! Convert into a more perfect realization of your own mystery, vocation, and mission.

Tracing the origins of the Renewal, Schreck outlines its characteristics, how it spread, what is meant by the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the charisms that are associated with it, and the communities that grew out of it. This book is for those who were involved in the Renewal and for those who want to know how the Spirit has moved so mightily in our own time and age.

Vatican II by Matthew L Lamb,Matthew Levering Pdf

From 1962 to 1965, in perhaps the most important religious event of the twentieth century, the Second Vatican Council met to plot a course for the future of the Roman Catholic Church. After thousands of speeches, resolutions, and votes, the Council issued sixteen official documents on topics ranging from divine revelation to relations with non-Christians. In many ways, though, the real challenges began after the council was over and Catholics began to argue over the interpretation of the documents. Many analysts perceived the Council's far-reaching changes as breaks with Church tradition, and soon this became the dominant bias in the American and other media, which lacked the theological background to approach the documents on their own terms. In Vatican II: Renewal Within Tradition, an international team of theologians offers a different reading of the documents from Vatican II. The Council was indeed putting forth a vision for the future of the Church, but that vision was grounded in two millennia of tradition. Taken together, these essays demonstrate that Vatican II's documents are a development from an established antecedent in the Roman Catholic Church. Each chapter contextualizes Vatican II teachings within that rich tradition. The resulting book is an indispensable and accessible companion to the Council's developments, one that focuses on theology and transcends the mass-media storyline of "liberal" versus "conservative."

Ressourcement by Gabriel Flynn,Paul D. Murray Pdf

Ressourcement: A Movement for Renewal in Twentieth-Century Catholic Theology provides both a historical and a theological analysis of the achievements of the renowned generation of theologians whose influence pervaded French theology and society in the period 1930 to 1960, and beyond. It considers how the principal exponents of ressourcement, leading Dominicans and Jesuits of the faculties of Le Saulchoir (Paris) and Lyon-Fourvière, inspired a renaissance in twentieth-century Catholic theology and initiated a movement for renewal that contributed to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The book assesses the origins and historical development of the biblical, liturgical, and patristic ressourcement in France, Germany, and Belgium, and offers fresh insights into the thought of the movement's leading scholars. It analyses the fierce controversies that erupted within the Jesuit and Dominican orders and between leading ressourcement theologians and the Vatican. The volume also contributes to the elucidation of the complex question of terminology, the interpretation of which still engenders controversy in discussions of ressourcement and nouvelle théologie. It concludes with reflections on how the most important movement in twentieth-century Roman Catholic theology continues to impact on contemporary society and on Catholic and Protestant theological enquiry in the new millennium.

Vatican II Renewal, Path to the Future of the Church by Joseph F. Eagan Pdf

Vatican II Renewal, Path to the Future of the Church is a prophetic call for change in the Catholic Church today. It presents the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council's revolutionary vision of renewal/reform of the church as the sure path to her restored credibility and promising future for her members today. Readers will find a clear treatment of its seven most important documents and the critical evaluation of their varied implementation in today's church valuable in understanding Vatican II. The book is also a rich source of information on the contemporary Catholic Church. Individual chapters treat Christian ecumenism, moral theology questions, the developing Catholic social thought, the church as people of God and a mystery, current liberation theologies, American women religious “nuns,” contemporary spiritualities. Issues treated are church governance, celibacy and married priests, women deacons, church polarization, sexual morality, dialogue with other Christian churches and world religions, and Vatican II's renewal of liturgy and of the sacraments of baptism, reconciliation and marriage. The author discusses with 'utmost honesty' church problems and challenges as well as her rich tradition and values. Early Christianity Scholar Professor Hamilton Hess, University of San Francisco, writes: “A marvelous book. Joseph Eagan has provided us with a masterly exposition of the problems facing the Catholic Church today and of the ecclesial renewal mandated by the Second Vatican Council. Thoroughly researched and clearly expressed for a variety of readers, this book comes at the ideal time of the beginning of new papal leadership.” Maureen Bennett, teacher and housewife, comments: “Catholics saw in the decrees of Vatican II an exciting vision of the future Church. For many, that promise remains unfulfilled. Fr. Eagan restores our hope for change still to come and illustrates the path to achieving that bright future.” Dr. Harvey Egan, Boston College, states: “Clearly written, concisely and with nuance . . . a great aid for those teaching students or for anyone interested in contemporary Catholicism.” Some readers' comments: “We treasure the book and find it so exciting, courageous and compelling. Francis, bishop of Rome, should keep it at his bedside.” “An enormous contribution to forming a foundation for our faith today.” “Optimism and hope permeate the pages.” “It has given me hope again.” Both young and older Catholics, students and parish discussion groups, and fellow Christians will find this book stimulating and full of hope.

Wake Up, Lazarus! by Pierre Hegy Pdf

Today's Catholic Church faces a major decline, and a dramatic renewal is needed to facilitate positive change. Three general factors that contribute to the spiritual decline of all mainline churches and three factors that are special to the Catholic Church. Hegy describes the inner workings of two successful parishes - one evangelical and the other Catholic - to illustrate the strategies used that contribute to vibrant and growing church communities. He also reviews various renewal plans and then presents his personal, long-term plan for renewal in the Catholic Church, with practical implementation suggestions included in each step.

From Generation to Generation by Anonim Pdf

Based on years of experience as a pastor and professor of theology, John Leith reflects on the dilemma of the church today as primarily "a crisis of faith." He states that renewal is found within Scripture and the tradition of a believing, worshiping community--in hearing the word of God, particularly in preaching, in teaching, in the sacraments, and in Christian conversation.

Charisms and Charismatic Renewal by Francis A. Sullivan Pdf

The rapid growth of the charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church has brought with it both controversy and confusion, and it has raised a number of important theological questions. Is it an authentic renewal movement? Exactly what is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? How should we understand the gift of tongues? What is prophecy? Does God really heal by supernatural means? One by one, Francis Sullivan takes up these controversial points in one of the most thorough theological investigations yet undertaken into the Catholic charismatic renewal. 'Charisms and Charismatic Renewal' is a scholarly analysis of this dynamic renewal movement for those who want to know more about its history, its theological and scriptural bases, its present impact on the church, and its probable future course.
