In 1884, Charles Dow, the Wall Street Journal's famous first editor, published the first stock market average... and in the years after, he formulated, through his editorials, a wide-ranging economic philosophy that has come to be known as "Dow's Theory." In fact, S.A. Nelson coined the term when he collected Dow's editorials together in this 1902 volume. Topics discussed include: methods of reading the market cutting losses short the danger in overtrading the recurrence of crises the tipster and much more. Dow's observations and Nelson's commentary sound strikingly modern even a century later, and remain vital components of an intelligent understanding of fundamental concepts of the stock market. S. A. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. THE EIGHT TEMPERAMENT FOB A PEOFESSI0NAL SPECULATOR. A Man who wins by haphazard speculation, who chances to operate successfully until he has filled his pockets, and retires with his gains from so fascinating an arena, is one in a hundred. Any one who knows anything of Stock Exchange speculation will confirm the statement that, to the ordinary run of men, the game is not worth the candle. There are, however, conditions under which speculation, in a market where ten or fifty thousand pounds can be lost in half an hour, may, under given conditions, be systematically practised profitably. First, and most important perhaps of all these conditions, is the temperament of the speculator, upon which we propose to speak in this chapter. A man who is excitable and easily led away from a set purpose will, if he go deep into speculation, be soon involved in hopeless ruin. A method of proceeding that has been formed by a careful judgment which has provided for all contingencies, once adopted, should be adhered to as a rule. In speaking of the conditions under which speculation may be successfully pursued as a business, it must be understood that we are referring to the one man in the hundred--the professional operator--who will frequently in the elaboration of his...

The Psychology of Speculation by Henry Howard Harper Pdf

W]hen once caught in the maelstrom of stock speculation the average man becomes more or less mesmerized, and at critical moments his conservatism, his resolutions and his theories all take flight. Under the discomposing influence of a rapid succession of changing values and alternating impulses he loses his perspective, is incapable of calm reasoning, and is likely to do precisely the opposite of what he had intended to do. -from The Psychology of Speculation How do you keep your head when large sums of money are at stake? What are the greatest psychology stumbling blocks to successful trading? How can we beat the market by learning more about ourselves? This sensible little guide teaches us how to be aware of our own assumptions and prejudices while trading so that we will expect them when they begin to interfere with our reasoning, and so that we can counter them before we do ourselves a financial injury. Originally published in a private edition, Harper's Wall Street wisdom is again available to show us how to be enlightened speculators.
