The Three Ages of Progress (Classic Reprint) by Julius E. Devos Pdf

Excerpt from The Three Ages of Progress The book, presented by Father Devos to readers of Church history under the name of "Three Ages of Progres," is not a chronicle of events as its size might suggest, but it is a series of tableaux of the principal ecclesiastical events which have occurred in the world since the coming of Christ with an interspersion of philosophical considerations, from a Catholic standpoint, of their causes and their effects. The conspiracy against truth which originated with the Centuriators of Magdeburg has, during this century, received many mortal blows, not only at the hands of Catholics like de Maistre, Lingard, Stolberg, Hurter, Cantu, Rohrbacher, Veuillot, Gorini, Wouters, Jungmann, Brownson, Janssen, Parsons, Pastor and others, but from non-Catholics as well, such as Roscoe, Voigt, Gregorovius, Guizot and many more in the old country, and it is actually being pulverized by Starbuck of Andover on our side of the ocean. It is time therefore that Catholics take a more decided stand against the calumnies of their enemies, not only by defending the Church as they have always done, but by making positive moves against the hostile lines, carrying the war into Africa itself. This has become easier indeed since the illustrious Pontiff who so marvelously continues to hold the rudder of Peter's bark has proclaimed the "open door policy" in regard to the rich archives of the Vatican. The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) by W. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea by O. H. Peters Pdf

Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. hawrah by L.S.S. O'Malley Pdf

Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. The Ages of Pupils and Their Progress Through the Elementary Grades (Classic Reprint) by William Armitage Averill Pdf

Excerpt from The Ages of Pupils and Their Progress Through the Elementary Grades When a number of measurements of any sort are arranged in any given order, as in this case, in the order of slow - progress percentage, the entire number of measurements is called a series or an array, and it is customary to locate the middle member or midpoint of the series and call it the median (md) and to use this median in many instances in place of the average. The median of this series of six measurements is the average between the third and fourth members, which is per cent. The average of the six percentages is per cent, while the average figured from a total of all six cities is 26 per cent. Superintendents will find the median the most convenient measure both to determine and to use in making comparisons with other cities of the same group. Sources of Chinese Tradition by Wm. Theodore De Bary,Richard Lufrano Pdf

For four decades Sources of Chinese Tradition has served to introduce Western readers to Chinese civilization as it has been seen through basic writings and historical documents of the Chinese themselves. Now in its second edition, revised and extended through Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin–era China, this classic volume remains unrivaled for its wide selection of source readings on history, society, and thought in the world's largest nation. Award-winning China scholar Wm. Theodore de Bary—who edited the first edition in 1960—and his coeditor Richard Lufrano have revised and updated the second volume of Sources to reflect the interactions of ideas, institutions, and historical events from the seventeenth century up to the present day. Beginning with Qing civilization and continuing to contemporary times, volume II brings together key source texts from more than three centuries of Chinese history, with opening essays by noted China authorities providing context for readers not familiar with the period in question. Here are just a few of the topics covered in this second volume of Sources of Chinese Tradition: Early Sino-Western contacts in the seventeenth century; Four centuries of Chinese reflections on differences between Eastern and Western civilizations; Nineteenth- and twentieth-century reform movements, with treatises on women's rights, modern science, and literary reform; Controversies over the place of Confucianism in modern Chinese society; The nationalist revolution—including readings from Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek; The communist revolution—with central writings by Mao Zedong; Works from contemporary China—featuring political essays from Deng Xiaoping and dissidents including Wei Jingsheng. With more than two hundred selections in lucid, readable translation by today's most renowned experts on Chinese language and civilization, Sources of Chinese Tradition will continue to be recognized as the standard for source readings on Chinese civilization, an indispensable learning tool for scholars and students of Asian civilizations.

Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present by Fareed Zakaria Pdf

The CNN host and best-selling author explores the revolutions—past and present—that define the polarized and unstable age in which we live. Populist rage, ideological fracture, economic and technological shocks, war, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk—the early decades of the twenty-first century may be the most revolutionary period in modern history. But it is not the first. Humans have lived, and thrived, through more than one great realignment. What are these revolutions, and how can they help us to understand our fraught world? In this major work, Fareed Zakaria masterfully investigates the eras and movements that have shaken norms while shaping the modern world. Three such periods hold profound lessons for today. First, in the seventeenth-century Netherlands, a fascinating series of transformations made that tiny land the richest in the world—and created politics as we know it today. Next, the French Revolution, an explosive era that devoured its ideological children and left a bloody legacy that haunts us today. Finally, the mother of all revolutions, the Industrial Revolution, which catapulted Great Britain and the US to global dominance and created the modern world. Alongside these paradigm-shifting historical events, Zakaria probes four present-day revolutions: globalization, technology, identity, and geopolitics. For all their benefits, the globalization and technology revolutions have produced profound disruptions and pervasive anxiety and our identity. And increasingly, identity is the battlefield on which the twenty-first century’s polarized politics are fought. All this is set against a geopolitical revolution as great as the one that catapulted the United States to world power in the late nineteenth century. Now we are entering a world in which the US is no longer the dominant power. As we find ourselves at the nexus of four seismic revolutions, we can easily imagine a dark future. But Zakaria proves that pessimism is premature. If we act wisely, the liberal international order can be revived and populism relegated to the ash heap of history. As few public intellectuals can, Zakaria combines intellectual range, deep historical insight, and uncanny prescience to once again reframe and illuminate our turbulent present. His bold, compelling arguments make this book essential reading in our age of revolutions.

The Idea of Progress (Classic Reprint) by William Ralph Inge Pdf

Excerpt from The Idea of Progress Hesiod. In the golden age Dike or Astraea wandered about the earth freely; in the silver age her visits became fewer, and in the brazen age she set out for heaven and became the constellation Virgo. Perhaps Horace had read the lament of the goddess: 'what a race the golden Sires have left - worse than their fathers and your offspring will be baser still.' In the third century after Christ, when civilization was really crumbling, Pagans and Christians join in a chorus of woe. On the other side, the triumphs of man over nature are celebrated by the great tragedians, and the Introduction to the First Book of Thucydides sketches the past history of Greece in the spirit of the nineteenth century. Lucretius has delighted our anthropologists by his brilliant and by no means idealized description of savage life, and it is to him that we owe the blessed word Progress in its modern sense. The 19th Century by A. George Sedgwick Pdf

Excerpt from The 19th Century: A Review of Progress It is impossible at this hour of the day to say anything new about the century behind us; and yet the nineteenth century is fortunate in having so many judgments passed upon it in the early days of the twentieth. We remem ber that we are a part of the thing judged, and we temper our praise, as we shade our blame, accordingly. The situation will be very different eighty years from now.
