The Threshold of Manhood by W. J. Dawson Pdf

Excerpt from The Threshold of Manhood: A Young Man's Words to Young Men The sermons in this volume, with one or two exceptions, have been especially addressed to young men. For five years, while resident in London, and particularly in the latter portion of that time, my ministry gave me special contact with young men, and my previous sympathies were greatly quickened by the closer knowledge I then gained of the temptations, struggles, and needs of city youth. I found that wherever there was any honest attempt made to deal with their intellectual difficulties, and wherever there was manifested an understanding sympathy of their social needs, there was a frank and even affectionate response accorded. The life of a young man in a great city is often one of the loneliest of lives. He has comrades, but few friends; many companions, but scarcely one counsellor. He has left the safe anchorage of home, and is often half-intoxicated with the sense of his unrestrained liberty. At the most critical and susceptible period of life he is most solitary, most left to himself, and least guarded against the seductions of impure delight. This period of life is the Threshold of Manhood. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Manhood and the Making of the Military by Anders Ahlbäck Pdf

When Finland gained its independence from Russia in 1917, the country had not had a military for almost two decades. The ensuing creation of a new national conscript army aroused intense but conflicting emotions among the Finns. This book examines how a modern conscript army, born out of a civil war, had to struggle through social, cultural and political minefields to find popular acceptance. Exploring the ways that images of manhood were used in the controversies, it reveals the conflicts surrounding compulsory military service in a democratic society and the compromises made as the new nation had to develop the will and skill to defend itself. Through the lens of masculinity, another picture of conscription emerges, offering new understandings of why military service was resisted and supported, dreaded and celebrated in Finnish society. Intertwined with the story of the making of the military runs the story of how manhood was made and remade through the idealized images and real-life experiences of conscripted soldiers. Placing interwar Finland within a broad European context, the book traces the origins of competing military traditions and ideological visions of modern male citizenship back to their continental origins. It contributes to the need for studies on the impact of the Great War on masculinities and constructions of gender among military cultures in the peacetime period between the two world wars.

Games and Sport in Everyday Life by Robert S. Perinbanayagam Pdf

"This is a powerful, richly nuanced, evocative work; a stunning and brilliantly innovative pedagogical intervention. It provides ground zero-the starting place for the next generation of theorists who study the self, narrative theory, and the place of games and sport in everyday life. A stunning accomplishment by one of America's major social theorists." Norman K. Denzin, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Games of many kinds have been played in all cultures throughout human history. This wide-ranging book explores the social and psychological processes involved in the playing of games. One player (or team) seeks to outwit another by undertaking various physical and communicative moves-not unlike conversations. Games have well-formed "narrative" structures, analogous to myths, that are enacted by each participant to give play to his/her self and its attendant emotions. These plays of the self enable each agent to seek adventures and heroic moments. Going beyond the mythmaking and catharsis that may be achieved by individuals, the author shows how games have been devised and played in particular societies and eras as means of promoting specific ideologies of a society, even social ideals such as utopias.

The town of Mapleview has the reputation of paranormal activity and urban legends. The Trivelli House - one of the oldest, historical buildings in town - has been owned by the family for generations. And it, too, has its legend. Mary, a member of the family, purchases the house from her aunt. She's determined to rid the property of any stigmatism or reputation, as it is the house she has wanted since she was a little girl. But a temporary guest of Mary's moves in with her, and soon disappears. More disappearances follow, and even though the Mapleview police have their most experienced detectives on the case, they can provide no answers. Are the disappearances supernatural, and related to the dark, centuries-old history of Mapleview?
