Portugal, Its Land and People (Classic Reprint) by William Henry Koebel Pdf

Excerpt from Portugal, Its Land and People It is, however, to the typical life and scenes of the land that I have devoted the chief attention; more especially for the reason that the hospitality accorded me during my stay afforded opportunities for studies of the kind that are not universally granted. It is possible to exaggerate the import ance of the byways. Yet it seems to me that these reveal a nearer road to the true heart of a nation than a stately pro cession along the monumental glories that show it in its most exalted moods alone. Travels Through Portugal and Spain by William Graham Pdf

Excerpt from Travels Through Portugal and Spain: During the Peninsular War In the month of October, 1812, I bid adieu to my father and old friends, and stepped into the mail coach, in College Green, Dublin, for Cork. Here I fell asleep with regretful ruminations, it being the first time in my life that I had ever travelled. I was supported in the trial of this separation, by the prospect of gratifying my curiosity in seeing foreign countries, and acting my part under Lord Wellington. I considered myself as now beginning the world on my own account, and I indulged in the hopes of becoming a more useful member of society, and eventually of relating my adventures, on my return home, to all my friends, around the Vicar of Wakefield's fire-side. We arrived in the morning, about eight o'clock, at Kilkenny, where we were much enlivened by a good cheerful fire and breakfast. I travelled inside, yet found it very cold, and one of the outside passengers was nearly frozen to death during the night. Kilkenny coal emits no smoke, and, when lighted, which takes more trouble than the common coal, it produces a very strong heat, and leaves no ashes. After breakfast, we again went into the coach, and I was not a little amused at observing the delightful country we passed through. There were many passengers who came and went during the day, but they were all silent, except one man, who talked like a parrot, for his tongue never ceased from the time he came into the coach until he left it. He dwelt much on the mail being robbed, and assured us it was likely to be our case. This he seemed to enjoy, so that one would have thought he wished it. "As soon as night fell, perhaps some troop of banditti would start out from the road side and attack us." In consequence, I kept a good look out for every clump of trees that grew near the road side (as Ireland had been much disturbed of late) and my fancy would sometimes picture their hats moving among the trees. Portugal Illustrated by W. M. Kinsey Pdf

Excerpt from Portugal Illustrated: In a Series of Letters The design of the author in visiting Portugal was to collect a. Variety of interesting facts from personal observation, and to bring back reminiscences of the feelings, manners, and customs of its inhabitants, which might make the people of England better acquainted with the peculiar features of Portugal, than are even the inhabitants themselves. They are seldom known to make observations, and very unfrequently travel beyond the walls of their own quintas; and couse quently can afford but scanty information to those inquiring few who venture to traverse their provinces. The traveller in Portugal is exposed frequently to danger, and always to considerable personal incon ve niences which arise from the nature of the climate, and is generally left to hazard conjectures about matters of which in a country more advanced in civilization, and not so burdened by oppressive and unwise rule, he might naturally expect to' meet on the spot with satis factory explanations. A Year in Portugal, 1889-1890 (Classic Reprint) by George Bailey Loring Pdf

Excerpt from A Year in Portugal, 1889-1890 Tm: following journal was written during a rapid journev to Portugal and a year's residence in Lisbon and Cmtra. It also covers a month spent in a trip to Rome and Gibraltar and Seville. I have not en deavored to discuss elaborately the objects I have seen, but to give a view of the life of an American Minister abroad, and to let light in upon the condition of Portugal. To which Court I was accredited. The advantages one enjoys who travels in Europe with a commission as a representative of the United States, or any other power, are great; and I have been eu couraged to believe that I have familiarly witnessed many a scene which I should not have enjoyed had I been present as a private citizen: The knowledge of Portugal, moreover, is not extensive, and I have been strongly inclined to sketch a country which has a most delightful climate and most charming scenery, is full of romantic traditions, and has been the theatre of some of the most remarkable events in history. From the days of Dom Ilenriques to the days of Dom Carlos, Portugal has contributed a large share of. The Con tentions history of Europe; and now, after fiftv years of peace, it enjovs an opportunity to become a most important kingdom. If this journal conveys, even in a small degree, the pleasure Ienjoyed in the beauti ful scenery of Portugal and in viewing the memorials of its greatness, I shall be content.
