The Tracker’s Relief by Charlie Richards Pdf

Henry Cosker knows he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. His uncle’s abuse took care of that. Still, when he learns his uncle is out of jail and begins getting mysterious—and chilling—messages from an unknown number, he puts two and two together. Even though it’s against his uncle’s parole, Henry knows the man is after him. Getting run off the road, he does the only thing he can think of…he runs into the woods and jumps a fence. As it’s been a few years since anyone in Gerald Wintry’s coven has found a beloved—the other half of their soul—Gerald figures he’s missed his opportunity. Over the centuries, he’s seen that Fate’s gifts come in waves, and he’s resigned himself to having to wait until the next round. That changes when, while following up on a tripped sensor, Gerald spots a human running into the back of the garden maze. Tracking him down, he learns his name is Henry, and he’s Gerald’s beloved. Except, Henry is wary of strangers, and for good reason. With a little help from a few friends, Gerald convinces his beloved that he can be trusted. Can Gerald keep Henry safe from the specters of his past?

Crowdsourcing, Constructing and Collaborating by Siddharth Peter deSouza,Nida Rehman,Saba Sharma Pdf

Citizens around the world use crowdsourced platforms to hold governments accountable, to fill gaps in infrastructural and municipal services, and to call attention to issues that impact everyday lives, such as sexual violence and environmental injustice. Crowdsourcing, Constructing and Collaborating brings together individuals and groups engaged in building and sustaining platforms for online collaboration and participation, to explore and reflect on the methods, challenges and potentials of the technology of crowdsourcing, and mapping of social impact. It brings together people directly involved in a range of projects from around the world-I Paid A Bribe, Environmental Justice Atlas, HarassMap, Intolerance Tracker, Visualizing Palestine, and Humanitarian Tracker-to critically reflect on the tactics, methods, challenges and opportunities of crowdsourcing and crowd-mapping as tools for social, environmental and political change. In an accessible and visually engaging style, it shows how participatory digital media become crucial components of journalistic, scholarly and activist practices, addressing a range of topical challenges, including economic corruption, sexual harassment, political violence and environmental conflict, in diverse geographic contexts.

Foreign Aid by Phyllis R. Pomerantz Pdf

Foreign Aid: Policy and Practice offers a complete overview of the basics of foreign aid. Who is it for? Who pays for it? Why does it exist? What is it spent on? How much is it? And most important, does it work? The aid debate has been flooded by academic studies and popular books that either challenge or champion the effectiveness of aid. Most presume that the reader already knows the basic facts and characteristics of the aid industry. This book provides readers with a comprehensive summary of the background, actors, core principles and policies, and intended (and unintended) outcomes of foreign aid, followed by a more informed and balanced treatment of the key controversies and trends in aid today. Drawing on the author’s 25 years’ experience in development practice and 15 years in teaching, the book reflects on recent efforts to accelerate aid’s impact and concludes by taking a look at the future of aid and the headwinds it will face in the first half of the 21st century. Perfect for university teaching at advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, this book will also encourage development practitioners, policy makers, and members of the public to engage in more informed debates about aid and development finance.

Big Data and Armed Conflict by Laura A. Dickinson,Edward W. Berg Pdf

"Data is emerging as a key component of military operations, both on and off the battlefield. Large troves of data generated by new information technologies-often termed "big data"-are growing ever more important to a range of military functions. Military forces and other actors will increasingly need to acquire, evaluate, and utilize such data in many combat contexts. At the same time, those forces can gain advantages by targeting adversaries' data and data systems. And a multitude of actors within armed conflict, including humanitarian and human rights organizations, can also use big data to deliver aid or identify atrocities. Such myriad uses of big data raise challenging interpretive questions under international humanitarian law (IHL), the jus ad bellum, and international human rights law. This book is the first of its kind to examine how these bodies of international law might apply to the uses of big data specifically. Focusing on IHL, the book also assesses how jus ad bellum categories might translate to operations involving big data below the armed conflict threshold. And because big data is profoundly transforming modern life off the battlefield as well, the book explores questions beyond the role of big data within weapons systems and other military capabilities to questions about the nature of civilian harm and scope of individual rights. This book offers a range of approaches and ideas to this timely issue, and offers an initial roadmap for scholars, policymakers, and advocates to follow as they address the challenges still to come"--

Atmosphere, Architecture, Cinema by Michael Tawa Pdf

Atmosphere, Cinema, Architecture: Thematic Reflections on Ambiance and Place explores cinema and architecture as ambient and affective settings or circumstances that can enable the emergence of atmosphere. This book is an interdisciplinary reading of cinematographic practice which develops useful implications for spatial composition in art and architectural design. The way a film is set up, directed, composed, framed, and technically constructed can provide parallels, analogies and metaphors for the spatial organisation of cities, landscapes and buildings. Likewise, the way a built setting is conceived and devised can inform approaches to framing and spatial organisation in cinematography. The book begins on a personal note with a series of recollected atmospheric experiences, leading to an investigation of ambiguity and consilient discrepancy as circumstantial conditions necessary for the production of atmosphere. The mood of melancholia is explored to show the pivotal role that ambiguity, discrepancy and irresolution play in its distinctive ambiance. Atmosphere is then defined as an emergent condition arising between an ambient, affective circumstance and a mooded human being. The book then moves to analyse the inherent conditions in the setup of filmic and architectural settings that render them atmospheric. Reference is made to the cinema of Bresson, Resnais, Lynch, Tarr, Malik and Campion, and to Romanesque tympanae, the architectonic scenography of Franz Kafka’s novel The Castle and the work of Spanish architects Flores Prats. The concluding section, Anatomy of Atmosphere, is a lexicon of concepts, themes and tactics around atmosphere that might usefully inform creative practice.
