Camp and Trail (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Edward White Pdf

Excerpt from Camp and Trail After considerable weighing of the pros and cons I have decide to include the names of firms where certain supplies may be bought. I realize that this sort of free advertisement is eminently unjust to other worthy houses handling the same lines of goods, but the case is one of self-defense. In The Forest I rashly offered to send to inquirers the name of the firm making a certain kind of tent. At this writing I have received and answered over eleven hundred inquiries. Since the publication of these papers in The Outing Magazine I have received hundreds of requests for information as to where this, that, or the other thing may be had. I have tried to answer them all, but to do so has been a tax on time I would not care to repeat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Blazed Trail (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Edward White Pdf

Excerpt from The Blazed Trail So Radway got the descriptions and a little map divided into townships, sections, and quarter sec tions; and went out to look at it. He searched until he found a blaze on a tree, the marking on which indicated it as the corner of a section. F rom this cor ner the boundary lines were blazed at right angles in either direction. Radway followed the blazed lines. Thus he was able accurately to locate isolated for ties (forty acres), eighties, quarter sections, and sections in a primeval wilderness. The feat, however, required considerable woodcraft, an exact sense of di rection, and a pocket compass. These resources were still further drawn upon for the next task. Radway tramped the woods, hills, and valleys to determine the most practical route over which to build a logging road from the standing tim ber to the shores of Cass Branch. He found it to be an affair of some puzzlement. The pines stood on a country rolling with hills, deep with pot-holes. It be came necessary to dodge in and out, here and there, between the knolls, around or through the swamps, still keeping, however, the same general direction, and preserving always the requisite level or down grade. Radway had no vantage point from which to survey. The country. A city man would promptly have lost himself in the tangle; but the woodsman emerged at last on the banks of the stream, leaving behind him a meandering trail of clipped trees that wound, twisted, doubled, and turned, but kept ever to a coun try without steep hills. From the main road he pur posed arteries to tap the most distant parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cross Trails by Herman Whitaker Pdf

Excerpt from Cross Trails: The Story of One Woman in the North Woods Stepping out into the street, she vented her relief in a sigh that was quite premature, for in the looks of the three lumberjacks who had just stepped on the porch was no hint of the consideration displayed inside. Huge hulks of men, their natural roughness was accentuated by their dress, the moose-skin coats, moccasins, thick arctic socks pulled on over heavy blue overalls, which added to their bulk and gave them the uncouth look and rolling gait of so many bears. While the faces of two displayed merely the coarse animalism of the type, in the third this was adulterated by an expression of vicious cunning and fired by a certain ferocity that glowed in his curiously red, lidless eyes. In pass ing they stared in her face, then turned and looked after. Replying to the third man's com ment, the other two burst out with hoarse guffaws that caused her to tingle with anger and shame. Nature Studies in Field and Wood (Classic Reprint) by Chester A. Reed Pdf

Excerpt from Nature Studies in Field and Wood Once around a swamp it led, and then across a large field. Half way across the two animal trails were aug meated by two more, - the big footprints of two men. From all appearances, the trail was getting warm and would soon terminate. Sure enough, it did, - at the stone wall bounding the farther side of the field. Here a large pile of stones (pulled from the wall but, as usual, not re placed) showed where bunny had taken refuge from his f our - legged pursuer, only to be pulled out by the two - legged ones. From this spot two pairs of shoe prints and one hound - trail led away as the owners went off in search of more game.
