The Training of an Infantry Company (Classic Reprint) by Edward Kirkpatrick Pdf

Excerpt from The Training of an Infantry Company This booklet has not been written for the use and benefit of officers and non-commissioned officers of long experience and proved skill in the profession of training men for battle. To such as these it may only provide an object of criticism, for in the course of years spent in turning recruits into trained soldiers they will have formulated to themselves, and adopted, some system of training which they found productive of the best results under their own guidance. But there are many at present, and at a future time, should certain circumstances arise in the life of the nation, there may be very many more who may not have such stores of experience to draw on, and yet may be faced with the problem of rapidly converting an untrained or only partially trained body of men into a force capable of acting successfully in real war, both in attack and defence against trained and disciplined troops. Training Infantry (Classic Reprint) by John F. Morrison Pdf

Excerpt from Training Infantry In my commissioned service of over thirty-three years I have spent over twenty-two years with my regiment and three years in training a battalion of college cadets. I have been intimately associated with the national guard of one state and have had experience with the guard of four other states. I have seen something of foreign troops in both peace and war. In these many years I have observed the methods of training employed by a number of officers. Our infantry training has improved over what I first knew but there still exists in places a lack of completeness and system. Of late years a much greater interest than formerly has been taken in the tactical instruction and training of our officers and the progress has been marked. The tactician is, however, but the skilled mechanic; the tools with which he works are his troops. New recruits are like the lump of ore, of no use until converted into steel and then forged into shape. The making of this tool from the raw material is our principal business during peace. Infantry Training (Classic Reprint) by U. S. Army War College Pdf

Excerpt from Infantry Training The precise movements of the manual of arms and close-order drill are not for the purpose of teaching men how to get about on the battle field. They will hardly be used there at all. One of the principal objects is to train the soldiers' minds and bodies to habits of precise, unhesitating obedience to the will of the leader, so that in the stress of battle they will obey without conscious effort, mechanically, automatically, as the easiest and most natural line of action. Par Le Commandant Brevete Niessel.a systematic method of training our men. It is an axiom that in order to master any subject properly the student must first be instructed in its elementary details, and it is in this respect that at present our system fails. During the annual course of train ing a few night operations are carried out by companies, by battalions, and by brigades, but during the rest of the year little attention is paid to night work, and, in many Units, at any rate, no attempt is made during the winter to give the soldier that elementary instruction which is indispensable to fit him to take an intelli gent part in operations in the dark. The Procurement and Training of Ground Combat Troops (Classic Reprint) by Robert Roswell Palmer Pdf

Excerpt from The Procurement and Training of Ground Combat Troops The armed forces of the United States at their peak strength during World War II numbered approximately The Army's share of this total was roughly of which about were enlisted men. Another volume of this series has described the problems attending the allocation to ground combat units of an adequate proportion of the mobilized manpower.1 Of equal concern to the Army Ground Forces was the quality of these men with respect to their basic aptitudes for service in the ground arms. Even if these basic aptitudes had been firmly established by the system of classifying the Army's quota of the national manpower, not all of those found to possess them could have been assigned to the Army Ground Forces. The com peting demands of the Air Forces for men with combat aptitudes and of both the Air and Service Forces for men with technical qualifications had to be met also. The supply necessary to meet all demands having quickly been found inadequate, priorities were established. In 1942 it was deemed necessary to give the Army Air Forces first call on the Army's quota of men in the highest brackets of general military aptitude. By the end of 1943 the operation of this priority and of other factors had reduced to a dangerously low level the number of men allotted to the Ground Forces who seemed likely to perform effectively in combat. In 1944 priority as between Air and Ground Forces was reversed, and the system of classification was revised to select more effectively for ground combat service the types of men who had an aptitude for such service.
