The Treasure of Franchard by Robert Louis Stevenson Pdf

Jean-Marie is a young boy, left homeless after the death of his previous protector. Doctor Desprez and his wife, the beautiful Anastasie, live in a French district called Gretz. They decide to adopt the boy and do their best to rehabilitate and educate him, whilst Desprez tries to regain his place in society. Will the couple succeed with the young Jean, or Doctor Desprez’s desire for wealth is going to ruin everything? Will the boy be able to adapt to his new family? Maybe he would prefer life on the street? This short story of philosophy, morality, family life and wealth is published in 1883. Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 – 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet and travel writer. For most of his life, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble, but kept on travelling and writing. One of his first titles is "Treasure Island", which is among his most popular novels, along with "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", "Kidnapped" and "A Child’s Garden of Verses". Stevenson’s works have been admired by many other authors.

Robert Louis Stevenson by William Gray Pdf

More than most writers, Robert Louis Stevenson requires a Literary Life. Fascination with Stevenson's life (the 'Stevenson biography' is almost a minor genre) has tended to eclipse his literary achievement. This study focuses on Stevenson's writing practice within the different geographical, cultural and political contexts that shaped it, from Scotland to the South Seas. Following Stevenson's own views on biography, the book is not structured primarily in terms of chronology, but is more a kind of literary geography than traditional literary history.

William Powell by Roger Bryant Pdf

Actor William Powell is perhaps best known for his roles as charming Nick in The Thin Man films and blustery Clarence Day in Life with Father. As diverse as those characters are, they don't begin to reveal the full scope of talent demonstrated by one of Hollywood's most intelligent leading men. Elegant, witty and dignified, Powell created accessible and human characters in a great variety of roles. His talent was such that Powell has a large and growing fan base 50 years after his last film was released, evidenced by the popularity of DVD rereleases and the frequent appearance of his films on cable television. The focus of this book is Powell's work in more than 90 films, from the silent era to the age of CinemaScope, woven into the dramatic and touching story of the actor's life. It begins by leaping into how Powell and actress Myrna Loy were launched to stardom as husband and wife Nick and Nora Charles in The Thin Man. The next chapter sets the stage for the baby Powell's entry into the world in 1892 and details his childhood and upbringing. Following chapters trace Powell's journey into the film industry, his early career as a popular villain, and his transition to talkies in the late 1920s aided by his stage training. The book details his work at Warner Bros., which turned him into a leading man, and his years of stardom at MGM. The book describes turning points in Powell's life--the death of lover Jean Harlow, a 21-month hiatus from films while the actor battled cancer, and a new leap to the top in Life with Father. Concluding chapters detail another flurry of films and the actor's retirement. A filmography lists Powell's films from 1922 to 1955, including those believed to be lost.

Robert Louis Stevenson by David Robb Pdf

This study offers concise critical discussions of Stevenson's whole range of prose fiction, from New Arabian Nights to The Ebb-Tide. His most famous novels are covered as well as a selection of lesser-known works. It draws on other writings including letters, poetry and essays, but the main emphasis is on the strikingly varied sequence of novels and short stories. Stevenson's admittedly fascinating life is touched on only so as to provide a context for his writing. The book is arranged by the dates when the works were written rather than by when they were published, thus providing a profile of his development as a writer. The emphasis is on the diversity and energy of Stevenson's creativity, without seeking to stress distinctions frequently applied to it in the past, such as that between his 'stories for boys' and books apparently written for adults. All contribute to his richness.
