The True Pirate Adventures by Daniel Defoe Pdf

A General History of the Pirates contains biographies of early 18th century pirates, which was influential in shaping popular conceptions of pirates. It is the prime source for the biographies of many well-known pirates and the author sticks close to the available sources. The History of the Pirates is a sequel to A General History of the Pyrates and it is considered one of Defoe's most remarkable neglected works. In this volume Defoe records the exploits of pirates who lived a few decades earlier. The book has been hugely influential in shaping popular notions of piracy. The King of Pirates is supposed to be an account of the pirate Henry Avery, known by contemporaries as "The Arch Pirate" and "The King of Pirates", and widely believed stories of Avery's pirate republic. Avery's account is presented in two long letters written by himself, one in Madagascar, and the other during the escape. The Pirate Gow is an account of John Gow, a notorious pirate whose short career was immortalized by Defoe. Gow had a successful career as a pirate around the Iberian Peninsula, but he was captured and hanged in London. Gow also served as the model for Captain Cleveland in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Pirate. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), was an English writer, journalist, and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is noted for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, and he is considered one of the founders of the English novel.

GREAT PIRATE STORIES - 18 True and Fictional Pirate Adventures by Various Pdf

An ancient Hopi proverb states “He who tells stories, rules the world.” Well here is your chance to become a King, or a Queen for a day, or at least, a few hours…… Herein, are 18 true and fictional stories, adventures and accounts of pirates and pirate actions. Stories like The Piccaroon, The Capture of Panama, The Daughter of the Great Mogul, The King of the Pirates, Barbarossa—King of the Corsairs, (Captain) Morgan at Puerto Bello, The Ways of the buccaneers and many, many more. While the majority of these stories occur in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean, a few stories from the Eastern Indian Ocean are included as well. At its highest expression, piracy embodies the romance of the high seas, and, in the main, we have Hollywood’s swashbucklers to thank for this. It is also a sad but inevitable commentary on the attitudes of mankind during the middle-to-late middle ages, that, if men were savages on land, they were doubly so at sea. There may be a certain human perversity in this, for the pirate was, at best, unquestionably a bad person. Piracy was gradually overcome with the settlement and ordering of the far-flung colonies and with the advent of steam power. Even so, romanticised accounts of fictional pirates are included in this volume. Equally so are the true accounts of piratical actions, mainly provided by the Royal Navy. Ours was a bold hardy world, up to the advent of steam,—every foot of which was won by fierce conquest of one sort or another. Out of this past the pirate emerges as a romantic, even at times, an heroic, figure. This final niche, despite his crimes, cannot altogether be denied to him. A hero he is and will remain so long as tales of the sea are told. So, have at him - in these pages! ============= KEYWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, fairytales, legends, myths, children’s stories, fables, bedtime stories, allegories, Piccaroon, Tom Cringle, Log, Capture of Panama, Buccaneers of America, Afloat, Ashore, Wonderful, Fight, Exchange, Bristol, Pirates, Algiers, Purchas, Pilgrims, Daughter, Great Mogul, King of the Pirates, Barbarossa, King of the Corsairs, Sea Wolves, Mediterranean, Captain Morgan, Puerto Bello, Ways of the Buccaneers, Customs, Spanish Main, True, Three Notorious Pirates, Capture, Ship Derby, Francis Lolonois, Slave, Pirate King, Fight. Thrilling Adventures by Land and Sea (True Pirate Stories and More) by James O. Brayman Pdf

There is a large class of readers who seek books for the sake of the amusement they afford. Many are not very fastidious as to the character of those they select, and consequently the press of the present day teems with works which are not only valueless, so far as imparting information is concerned, but actually deleterious in their moral tendency, and calculated to vitiate and enervate the mind. Such publications as pander to a prurient taste find a large circulation with a portion of society who read them for the same reason that the inebriate seeks his bowl, or the gambler the instruments of his vocation--for the excitement they produce. The influence of works of this description is all bad--there is not a single redeeming feature to commend them to the favor or toleration of the virtuous or intelligent. It cannot be expected that minds accustomed to such reading can at once be elevated into the higher walks of literature or the more rugged paths of science. An intermediate step, by which they may be lifted into a higher mental position, is required. There is in the adventures of the daring and heroic, something that interests all. There is a charm about them which, while it partakes of the nature of Romance, does not exercise the same influence upon the mind or heart. When there are noble purposes and noble ends connected with them, they excite in the mind of the reader, noble impulses. The object of the present compilation is to form a readable and instructive volume--a volume of startling incident and exciting adventure, which shall interest all minds, and by its attractions beget thirst for reading with those who devote their leisure hours to things hurtful to themselves and to community. We have endeavored to be authentic, and to present matter, which, if it sometimes fail to impart knowledge or instruction, or convey a moral lesson, will, at least, be innoxious. But we trust we have succeeded in doing more than this--in placing before the reading public something that is really valuable, and that will produce valuable results.

Pirate Hunters by Robert Kurson Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY CHICAGO TRIBUNE • A thrilling adventure of danger and deep-sea diving, historic mystery and suspense, by the author of Shadow Divers Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time. If Chatterton and Mattera succeed, they will make history—it will be just the second time ever that a pirate ship has been discovered and positively identified. Soon, however, they realize that cutting-edge technology and a willingness to lose everything aren’t enough to track down Bannister’s ship. They must travel the globe in search of historic documents and accounts of the great pirate’s exploits, face down dangerous rivals, battle the tides of nations and governments and experts. But it’s only when they learn to think and act like pirates—like Bannister—that they become able to go where no pirate hunters have gone before. Fast-paced and filled with suspense, fascinating characters, history, and adventure, Pirate Hunters is an unputdownable story that goes deep to discover truths and souls long believed lost. Pirates by Peter Lehr Pdf

“In his lively, vivid history of pirates, Lehr finds some striking continuities from ancient to modern times.” —Foreign Affairs A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year In the twenty-first century, pirates have regained a central place in Western culture, thanks to an odd combination of a blockbuster film franchise and a dramatic rise in piracy around the Horn of Africa. In this global history of the phenomenon, maritime terrorism and piracy expert Peter Lehr casts fresh light on pirates. Ranging from the Vikings and Wako pirates in the Middle Ages to modern-day Somali pirates, Lehr delves deep into what motivates pirates and how they operate. He also illuminates the state’s role in the development of piracy throughout history: from privateers sanctioned by Queen Elizabeth to pirates operating off the coast of Africa taking the law into their own hands. After exploring the structural failures that create fertile ground for pirate activities, Lehr evaluates the success of counter-piracy efforts—and the reasons behind its failures. “Informative and often entertaining . . . Lehr traces the global history of piracy, quoting judiciously from an array of historians and sources to make his case” —The Times “Groundbreaking . . . provides a detailed analysis of the causes of piracy [and] reveals the operations of pirates ignored in most previous histories.” —David Cordingly, author of Under the Black Flag “Policymakers would do well to read it, as would aspiring pirates in search of career advice.” —Financial Times

Pirates by Jennifer Willis Pdf

The surprising success of Pirates of the Caribbean, a new screen adaptation of the classic Peter Pan, and the Russell Crowe film Master and Commander have fueled interest in seagoing swashbucklers. There is a rich literature on pirates -- both in fiction and nonfiction. This collection offers excerpts from the works of contemporary authors: Patrick O'Brian's riveting account of a sea battle with Borneo's pirates will enthrall his fans; Farley Mowat's The Black Joke is a rousing adventure of the rum-running set in the 1930s and written in the tradition of the great classic pirate tales. Readers will also discover and rediscover the most infamous pirates of yore, from Treasure Island's Long John Silver to Peter Pan's Captain Hook. They'll encounter pirate adventures from neglected classics such as L. Frank Baum's Pirates in Oz, Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo and Rafael Sabatini's Captain Blood. And they'll find accounts of the dastardly deeds of female pirates both real (Anne Bonney and Mary Read) and imagined (Arthur Ransome's Chinese pirate Miss Lee). Pirates also draws upon colorful true-life accounts and authentic first-person narratives of pirates -- and their victims -- discovered in nearly forgotten works such as The Pirates Own Book and Captured by Pirates.

The Pirate (Adventure Novel Based on True Story) by Walter Scott Pdf

This novel is based on the life of pirate John Gow who features as Captain Cleveland. The setting is the southern tip of the main island of Shetland (which Scott visited in 1814), around 1700. The arrival of the shipwrecked captain, Cleveland, spoils young Mordaunt's relationship with the Troil girls, and soon a bitter rivalry grows between the two men. Minna falls in love with Cleveland, not knowing his true profession. Brenda, however, is in love with Mordaunt. The pirates capture the Troils, but after an encounter with the frigate HMS Halcyon, they are freed… Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. He was the first modern English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.

The Medieval Crossbow by Stuart Ellis-Gorman Pdf

An in-depth, illustrated history and technical study of this iconic weapon of the Middle Ages. The crossbow is an iconic weapon of the Middle Ages and, alongside the longbow, one of the most effective ranged weapons of the pre-gunpowder era. Unfortunately, despite its general fame it has been decades since an in-depth history of the medieval crossbow has been published, which is why Stuart Ellis-Gorman’s detailed, accessible, and highly illustrated study is so valuable. The Medieval Crossbow approaches the history of the crossbow from two directions. The first is a technical study of the design and construction of the medieval crossbow, the many different kinds of crossbows used during the Middle Ages, and finally a consideration of the relationship between crossbows and art. The second half of the book explores the history of the crossbow, from its origins in ancient China to its decline in sixteenth-century Europe. Along the way it explores the challenges in deciphering the crossbow’s early medieval history as well as its prominence in warfare and sport shooting in the High and Later Middle Ages. This fascinating book brings together the work of a wide range of accomplished crossbow scholars and incorporates the author’s own original research to create an account of the medieval crossbow that will appeal to anyone looking to gain an insight into one of the most important weapons of the Middle Ages.
