Aeronautical Technologies for the Twenty-First Century by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems,Committee on Aeronautical Technologies Pdf

Prepared at the request of NASA, Aeronautical Technologies for the Twenty-First Century presents steps to help prevent the erosion of U.S. dominance in the global aeronautics market. The book recommends the immediate expansion of research on advanced aircraft that travel at subsonic speeds and research on designs that will meet expected future demands for supersonic and short-haul aircraft, including helicopters, commuter aircraft, "tiltrotor," and other advanced vehicle designs. These recommendations are intended to address the needs of improved aircraft performance, greater capacity to handle passengers and cargo, lower cost and increased convenience of air travel, greater aircraft and air traffic management system safety, and reduced environmental impacts.

NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Report 6: The Relationship Between the Use of US Government Technical Reports by US Aerospace Engineers and Scientists and Selected Institutional and Sociometric Variables by Anonim Pdf

A study was undertaken that investigated the relationship between the use of U.S. government technical reports by U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists and selected institutional and sociometric variables. Survey research is the methodology used for the study. Data were collected by means of a self- administered mail questionnaire. The approximately 34 000 members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) served as the study population. The response rate for the survey was 70 percent. A dependent relationship was found to exist between the use of U.S. government technical reports and three of the institutional variables (academic preparation, years of professional aerospace work experience, and technical discipline). The use of U.S. government technical reports was found to be independent of all of the sociometric variables. The institutional variables best explain the use of U.S. government technical reports by U.S. aerospace engineers and scientists.

Trends and Challenges in Aerospace Offsets by Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy,National Research Council Pdf

The granting of offsets to promote exports of major aircraft systems has been a source of significant controversy. Critics believe that offsets undermine the U.S. manufacturing base; lead to the transfer of commercial technology, possibly affecting national security; and result in the loss of high-wage jobs. Defenders of the practice argue that offsets are a fact of commercial life and can result in net U.S. job gains. In an effort to focus the offsets debate on analytical issues, the White House National Economic Council asked the National Research Council to convene expert academicians, representatives from the aerospace industry, and top government officials to discuss the impact of offsets on the U.S. economy. To ensure a rigorous discussion encompassing all points of view, the conference included a series of papers outlining the positions of key participants. This resulting volume offers a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the impact of aerospace offsets.

Global Arms Production by Ethan B. Kapstein Pdf

Why do states collaborate in the production of advanced weaponry? Under what conditions do such collaborative arrangements succeed? What are the implications of armaments collaboration for the international economic and security environments? Arms collaboration is not a new phenomenon, but there is increasing debate-both in the United States and abroad-over the associated costs and benefits. Critics charge that collaborative projects result in technology give-aways, the creation of defense-industrial competitors, and the loss of domestic jobs. Supporters argue that the very same projects strengthen alliance relations, provide access to new technology, and result in arms sales which might otherwise have been lost to foreign competitors. In Global Arms Production these issues are addressed by distinguished contributors such as Ethan B. Kapstein, Jacques S. Gansler, William Keller, Joel L. Johnson, Jack Nun, Robert H. Trice, C. Michael Farr, Grant T. Hammond and Stanley Sienkiewicz. Co-published with the Center for International Affairs of Harvard University.
