The Umberger Tragedy by Edward H. Werner Pdf

Excerpt from The Umberger Tragedy: With a Criminal History of Somerset County, Pa This little hook has been written and published with a purpose to supply what was believed to be a general and increasing demand for a convenient, concise and reliable account of the now famous Umberger homicide in Jenner township, and other high crimes committed within the borders of Somerset county in the year 1889 - a year that must remain long memorable in our county's annals for its unusual record of sanguinary deeds. That this belief was well founded has been already abundantly proved. The numerous subscriptions following the announcement of the book's preparation induced the publisher to enlarge considerably upon the original scope of the work, so that the completed book contains additional matter pertaining to the criminal history of Somerset county that is believed will be of general interest to the people of the county and regions contiguous thereto. It has been the aim of the writer to avoid sensational coloring bf facts which would class the book among the already too numerous mass of objectionable publications and detract immeasurably from its historical value. The book may be disappointing in a double sense. It will probably encounter the criticisms of a mawkish sentimentality on the one hand; and it may fail to satisfy the views of the extremely rancorous who have awaited the administration of the law with manifest impatience. If, however, it shall be instrumental in dispelling the mistaken impression that Somerset county is a favorite field for criminals, in which to ply their vocation, its mission will be amply fulfilled. The success of the enterprise has been largely due to the efforts of John W. Patton, Esq., who has covered the business field in a manner unusually thorough and effective, in advance of publication. Encyclopedia of World Crime by Jay Robert Nash Pdf

Jay Robert Nash knows crime, not speculatively or academically but reportorially, at the level of the most intense and thorough investigative journalism. Some 50,000 entries in six volumes range from biblical times through 1988, and include a dictionary volume and an index volume. The entries present the most notable and important international criminal cases, persons, places, and events, as well as important persons in the fields of law enforcement, criminal justice, the judiciary, criminology, forensic medicine, pathology, penology, and criminal psychiatry and psychology. They also cover works of drama, fiction, film, poetry, and song, explaining the real-life role models for such works. Nash does fall prey to some common and insidious myths: his dictionary, for example, lists anarchism, anarcho-syndicalism, and anarchy, but not capitalism, which is clearly more intimately (i.e. structurally) and extensively connected with crime and criminality. But the areas he knows, he knows better than just about anyone else. Note: this is a continuity series encyclopedia, offering annual editions, the year 1989 to be covered in CrimeBook's 1990 annual. Destination Normandy by G. H. Bennett Pdf

A cross-section of the American experience on D-Day Unique perspective from the regimental level that also integrates strategic and tactical considerations Stories of largely forgotten acts of valor G. H. Bennett collects oral histories from the soldiers of three American regiments and weaves them into an intimate account of the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. Widely scattered during its drop into Normandy, the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment (82nd Airborne Division) stopped the advance of an SS division. The untested 116th Infantry Regiment (29th Infantry Division) landed on bloody Omaha Beach, where it suffered more casualties than any other regiment that day. Meanwhile, the 22nd Infantry Regiment (4th Infantry Division) easily waded ashore on Utah Beach but faced savage fighting as it moved inland.

Murder & Mayhem in Essex County by Robert Wilhelm Pdf

“The importance of the area to early America . . . make the book a must-read for anyone interested in the dark side of New England history” (Early American Crime). The idea of a criminal record originated in the early seventeenth century when the magistrates of the Massachusetts Bay Colony began recording dates, places, victims and criminals. Despite, or perhaps because of, the strict code of the Puritans, some early settlers earned quite the rap sheet that landed them either in the stocks or at the end of a noose. With biting wit and an eye for the macabre, local author Robert Wilhelm traces the first documented cases of murder and mayhem in Essex County, Massachusetts. Discover the story of Hannah Duston’s revenge on her Abenaki Indian captors, why the witchcraft hysteria hung over Salem and Andover and how Rachel Wall made her living as a pirate. Decide for yourself whether the accused are guilty or if history lends itself to something else entirely. Includes photos!
