The United Nations and Higher Education by Kevin Kester Pdf

In this book, Kevin Kester details how the United Nations promotion of higher education for peace and international understanding sometimes unintentionally contributes to the reproduction of conflict and violence across diverse cultures. He shows this through an indepth examination of peace curricula, pedagogy and policy in one United Nations higher education institution, where he indicates how dominant philosophical and pedagogical models that signify acceptable peace education ultimately undermine the very goals of educational peacebuilding. Kester contends that theoretical and pedagogical training must develop beyond the dominant psycho-social, rational and state-centric assumptions that permeate the field today if higher education is to better contribute to personal and societal peacebuilding. Drawing from the fields of educational philosophy and sociology, he argues for new concepts of poststructural violence and second order reflexivity that can assist scholars in reducing conflict and building peace in lasting ways. He complements his fieldwork findings with personal reflections throughout the book to reimagine the transformative possibilities of peacebuilding education for the 21st century.

The United Nations and Education by David Coleman,Phillip W. Jones Pdf

The UN is often questioned about its ongoing relevance and overall effectiveness in the 21st century, particularly in its involvement with educational policy and co-operation around the globe. This ground-breaking book examines the four key agencies within the UN system that share the vital role of addressing educational futures: UNESCO, the World Bank, UNICEF and UNDP. As the core of educational multilateralism, these agencies powerfully reflect the UN's historic grounding in peace, human rights and economic development. The history of each agency's commitment to education is explored with critical detachment, with particular attention paid to the post-Cold War period, during which each agency has needed to re-think the impact of globalisation on both its modes of operation as well as the content of its education policies. Just as education policy itself has been subject to the impact of globalisation, so to has each agency had to adapt at a time when not only education but also their own mandates have been thrown open to question. This timely book will be essential reading for all those working with and for UN agencies, foreign aid workers and the development co-operation industry. At a time when education policies, budgets and strategies appear wide open to profound changes, this book will provide a much-needed roadmap to the future.

The United Nations as a Knowledge System by Nanette Svenson Pdf

This book seeks to explore how the UN has generated, warehoused, disseminated, structured, packaged, expanded, transferred and leveraged its vast resources of accumulated information and experience throughout the decades and, particularly, since the start of the 21st century with the introduction of more connective information and communications technology. It examines the overarching objectives that have guided such activity and divides UN knowledge management into three distinct, but often overlapping and intertwining, categories: knowledge for social and organizational learning; knowledge for norm setting; and knowledge for creation of products and services. Svenson brings together these multiple aspects of UN knowledge management to present a holistic view of how the organization utilizes its global intelligence to educate, advocate and serve member countries’ development. Instead of looking at the UN as an international bureaucracy or as a peacekeeping, policymaking, humanitarian or development entity, this work studies the UN as a generator and purveyor of information, learning and experience in all of these areas. This book will be key reading for all students and scholars of international organizations.

This book takes a closer look at the relation between current issues and trends in higher education and scientific research in the Arab World and in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states of Qatar and United Arab Emirates (UAE). This thoroughly researched text traces the development of higher education in the GCC area as it continues to be positioned in an intersection of international and local factors. The text further articulates the pivotal political and cultural influences that act as real and perceived barriers towards the advancement of key fields. The chapters analyze the current policy trends, structures, and coping alternatives in addressing higher education challenges, whilst also providing comparative first-hand texts with the other Arab states in the region. By drawing focus on the GCC area, the text identifies the crucial factors that hamper learning and research performance. The book serves as an invaluable discussion on the implications for policy makers and HEIs in relation to the eponymous regions and other Arab states in the GCC area. Enhancing understanding of the scope, scale, and complexity of higher education and scientific research in the GCC area, the book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of educational policy, comparative and international education and higher education.

The Implementation of United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) in Bahir Dar University. Faculty Impressions by Jerusalem Yibeltal Yizengaw,Asnake Tarekegn Nigussie Pdf

Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Pedagogy - Higher Education, grade: 4th, Bahir Dar University (College of Education & Behavioral Sciences), course: Education for National Development, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the impressions of faculty in Bahir Dar University (BDU) about the institutional accomplishments of United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). For the purpose, a descriptive survey design was employed. Data was collected using a Sustainability Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) for Colleges and Universities (U L S F, 2009.) after making proper level adaptations. Findings show that though the achievements in sustainability since now are at relevant level of start, the current level of impressions of the faculty of Bahir Dar University towards the accomplishments of UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development varies across the Dimensions i.e. Curriculum, Research and Scholarship; Operations; Faculty and Staff Development and Rewards; Outreach and Service; Student Opportunities; and Administration, Mission and Planning. Therefore, the practical implications of the findings suggest to increase the depth and breadth of sustainability-related efforts in BDU by giving equal level of attention across the seven critical dimensions of higher education roles and to be further reinforced by organizing responsible offices at the university level, by prioritizing activities through planned measures, and by allocating sufficient budget, if BDU is to continue its commitment for the success of UNDESD. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Marked by the years 2005 to 2014, the DESD encompasses a global vision where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from education and learning that motivates societal change towards a sustainable future (UNESCO, 2005b). In particular, Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 acknowledges

Storytelling for Sustainability in Higher Education by Petra Molthan-Hill,Heather Luna,Tony Wall,Helen Puntha,Denise Baden Pdf

To be a storyteller is an incredible position from which to influence hearts and minds, and each one of us has the capacity to utilise storytelling for a sustainable future. This book offers unique and powerful insights into how stories and storytelling can be utilised within higher education to support sustainability literacy. Stories can shape our perspective of the world around us and how we interact with it, and this is where storytelling becomes a useful tool for facilitating understanding of sustainability concepts which tend to be complex and multifaceted. The craft of storytelling is as old as time and has influenced human experience throughout the ages. The conscious use of storytelling in higher education is likewise not new, although less prevalent in certain academic disciplines; what this book offers is the opportunity to delve into the concept of storytelling as an educational tool regardless of and beyond the boundaries of subject area. Written by academics and storytellers, the book is based on the authors’ own experiences of using stories within teaching, from a story of “the Ecology of Law” to the exploration of sustainability in accounting and finance via contemporary cinema. Practical advice in each chapter ensures that ideas may be put into practice with ease. In addition to examples from the classroom, the book also explores wider uses of storytelling for communication and sense-making and ways of assessing student storytelling work. It also offers fascinating research insights, for example in addressing the question of whether positive utopian stories relating to climate change will have a stronger impact on changing the behaviour of readers than will dystopian stories. Everyone working as an educator should fi nd some inspiration here for their own practice; on using storytelling and stories to co-design positive futures together with our students.
