NASA's Voyager Missions by Ben Evans Pdf

2022 marks the 45th anniversary of the Voyager probe launches. Launched into space in 1977, these twin probes explored the farthest reaches of the Solar System before venturing on a one-way journey beyond, all the while testing the bounds of science, robotic exploration and our collective imagination. This heavily revised commemorative book takes a comprehensive look at their incredible achievements, future potential and overall legacy. Chronicled herein is an epic journey to unveil the mysterious outer reaches of the Solar System for the first time. The book recounts the Voyagers’ travels through the asteroid belt and past the giant gaseous planets Jupiter and Saturn, as well as Voyager 2’s forays near the distant ice giants Uranus and Neptune. Each chapter details in full the game-changing scientific data and glorious imagery they sent back to Earth. This new edition incorporates all the new data we have learned in the nearly 20 years since its original publication, discussing how the knowledge first gleaned with Voyager has been built upon in subsequent decades by Cassini, Juno and New Horizons. The Voyager probes captured imaginations around the world; now is an opportune time to reflect on their unparalleled quest across the edges of the Solar System and the enigmatic interstellar medium beyond.

The Scientific American Handbook of Travel by Albert Allis Hopkins Pdf

There are no conditions of travel in which a few general hints as to how to adjust one's self to surroundings can prove so useful as on a sea voyage, and it is with the object of preparing the traveler for his trip by telling him how to go, how much it will cost, how to amuse himself, and what to do on arrival at the coveted shore, that this book has been written. The writer believes that by giving just that sort of information which he himself and others of his acquaintance have wanted to know on various trans-Atlantic voyages, he cannot fail to meet pretty closely the needs of the average voyager. The writer also hopes that the information contained in this volume will be augmented in subsequent editions by the voluntary experience of its readers, - an addition which cannot fail to greatly increase the value of the book. It may interest the reader to know that many hundreds of pamphlets, issued by various transportation companies throughout the world, were thrown into the alembic which produced this slender volume - a fact which will give the reader some idea of the difficulties which are entailed in editing a work of this character. Within the last two or three years steamship and railway companies have done much to annihilate space; it is now possible to make a complete circuit of the earth in 38 days, or less than one-half the proverbial 80 days of Jules Verne. This fantastic book is a reprint of the original published in 1910.

The Scientific American Handbook of Travel by Albert Allis Hopkins Pdf

Excerpt from The Scientific American Handbook of Travel: With Hints for the Ocean Voyage, for European Tours, and a Practical Guide to London and Paris Here are no conditions of travel in which a few general hints as to how to adjust one's self to surroundings can prove so useful as on a sea voyage, and it is with the object of preparing the traveler for his trip by telling him how to go, how much it will cost, how to amuse himself, and what to do on arrival at the coveted shore, that this book has been written. It may interest the reader to know that many hundreds of pamphlets, issued by various transportation companies throughout the world, were thrown into the alembic which produced this slender volume - a fact which will give the reader some idea of the difficulties which are entailed in editing a work of' this character. Within the last two or three years steamship and railway companies have done much to annihilate space; it is now possible to make a complete circuit of the earth in 38 days, or less than one-half the proverbial 80 days of Jules Verne. The trip has been made from London to San Francisco in something less than ten days. It is possible to leave New York Wednesday morning and reach London Monday night in time to connect with trains which land passengers in Paris very early on Tuesday morning. All of this represents sub stantial progress in transportation. All of these matters are re ferred to in the appropriate sections of this book. It is too early as yet to prophesy what may be done in aerial transportation of pas sengers, but from the various schemes which have been proposed and almost carried out, it is possible that the next five years may see important developments along this line.
