The Welsh Life of Saint David by D. Simon Evans Pdf

This scholarly edition of The Welsh Life of St David presents the medieval text of the Life of one of the early Christian missionaries of west Wales. More than one recension of the Latin Life written by Rhigyfarch was produced between the end of the eleventh century and the emergence of the abridged version in Welsh written by an unknown author at the start of the fourteenth century. The present annotated text of the Welsh Life is based on that found in the Book of the Anchorite of Llanddewibrefi (c.1350), and contains a detailed comparison with the earlier Latin version. The comprehensive introduction by D. Simon Evans considers early references to David alongside valid information relating to the Saint in the sixth century, in order clearly to identify the historical David and to outline his significance in an early period of Welsh history. The Welsh Life of St David was first published by the University of Wales Press in 1988 --

Dewi Sant by J.B. Midgley Pdf

MARCH 1ST is St David's Day, the national day of Wales and has been celebrated as such since the twelfth century. So who was St David (or Dewi Sant in Welsh)? Much of what we know about St David comes from a biography written around 1090 by Rhygyfarch, a clerk of St David's. Born on a cliff top near Capel Non (Non's chapel) on the South-West Wales coast during a fierce storm, both his parents were descended from Welsh royalty. An ascetic who ate only bread, herbs and vegetables and who drank only water, David became known as Aquaticus or Dewi Ddyfrwr (the water drinker) in Welsh. As a missionary David travelled throughout Wales and Britain and even made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where he was consecrated bishop. He founded many monasteries, including one at St David's, which he made his episcopal seat. He was named Archbishop of Wales at the Synod of Brevi (Llandewi Brefi) in 550. St David died in Menevia on 1 March 589 AD, believed to be over 100 years old. This new book traces the background and heritage of this Apostle of Wales, still relevant for the new evangelisation today.

Matins, Lauds, and Vespers for St. David's Day by Owain Tudor Edwards Pdf

This book looks at the only Welsh antiphonal known and discusses in particular the material for services celebrating the memory of the Welsh patron saint. The book has a full listing and description of the contents of the Penpont Antiphonal, National Library of Wales MS. 20541 E, and discusses the significance of the Office of St David. The chants and the literary text are described and discussed, supported by full transcriptions of the musical and literary texts, and by facsimile reproduction of the manuscript folios. The office is considered in its historical perspective, as evidence of the active cultivation of music in Wales during the Middle Ages, and for its relationship to other similar late medieval offices and to Rhigyfarch's Life of St David.

Mary Magdalene and Her Sister Martha by Jane Cartwright Pdf

Mary Magdalene and Her Sister Martha: An Edition and Translation of the Medieval Welsh Lives provides scholarly editions and English translations of the medieval Welsh versions of the legends of Mary Magdalene and Martha. Described by Victor Saxer as medieval best sellers, these hagiographical tales, which described how Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha survived a perilous sea voyage from the holy land and evangelized Provence, were available in many different Latin and vernacular versions and circulated widely in the medieval West. The texts were translated or adapted into Middle Welsh some time before the mid-fourteenth century: the Middle Welsh Life of Mary Magdalene is extant in thirteen manuscripts and the Middle Welsh Life of Martha is preserved in eight of the same manuscripts. Jane Cartwright makes the Middle Welsh versions available to an international audience for the first time and provides a detailed study of the Welsh manuscripts that contain the texts, a comparison between the different manuscripts versions and a discussion of the wider hagiographical context of the texts in Wales. The volume includes transcriptions, editions and translations of the two Lives based on the oldest most complete extant versions found in the Red Book of Talgarth c. 1400, as well as an additional section of text describing Mary Magdalene s life before Christ s crucifixion from the fifteenth-century Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales, Peniarth MS 27ii. The edition is accompanied by a comprehensive glossary which provides translations of all medieval Welsh words that occur in the texts, an analysis of the development and transmission of the legends, as well as a discussion of the relevance and popularity of these two female saints in late medieval Wales: medieval Welsh poetry, church dedications, and holy wells are also considered.
