Ethno-ornithology by Sonia C. Tidemann,Andrew Gosler Pdf
Indigenous knowledge that embraces ornithology takes in whole social dimensions that are inter-linked with environmental ethos, conservation and management for sustainability. In contrast, western approaches have tended to reduce knowledge to elemental and material references. This book looks at the significance of indigenous knowledge of birds and their cultural significance, and how these can assist in framing research methods of western scientists working in related areas. As well as its knowledge base, this book provides practical advice for professionals in conservation and anthropology by demonstrating the relationship between mutual respect, local participation and the building of partnerships for the resolution of joint problems. It identifies techniques that can be transferred to different regions, environments and collections, as well as practices suitable for investigation, adaptation and improvement of knowledge exchange and collection in ornithology. The authors take anthropologists and biologists who have been trained in, and largely continue to practise from, a western reductionist approach, along another path - one that presents ornithological knowledge from alternative perspectives, which can enrich the more common approaches to ecological and other studies as well as plans of management for conservation.

The Origin and Distribution of Birds in Coastal Alaska and British Columbia by Christopher W. Swarth Pdf
At the time of his death in 1935, Harry S. Swarth, head of the Mammalogy and Ornithology Departments at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, had been preparing a manuscript reflecting on twenty-five years of research in Alaska and British Columbia. The Distribution and Migrations of Birds in Adjacent Alaska and British Columbia summarized Swarth's research, ideas, and conjectures on bird life in the region, including theories on when and how birds populated this vast territory after the retreat of glaciers near the end of the Pleistocene. Drawing on his field experiences and the forty scientific papers on the region he published from 1908 on, Swarth's manuscript represented state-of-the-art science for the time. And it holds up; his work is still cited by ornithologists today. In 2019, Christopher Swarth, Harry's grandson and a scientist in his own right, discovered the forgotten manuscript. This volume includes the original unpublished manuscript, accompanied by contextual essays from contemporary scientists, including Steven Heinl (Alaska Fish & Wildlife) and Philip Unitt (San Diego Natural History Museum). He has also included excerpts from Harry Swarth's field notes to bring additional color and insight to the project. Appendices include expedition locations, a comprehensive list of Harry Swarth's publications, and a glossary with historic and contemporary bird names.

Birds of the Northwest by Elliott Coues Pdf
This volume is based mainly on an unpublished report prepared by Coues in 1862 from the ornithological collections of F.V. Hayden and G.H. Trook taken during an expedition under Captain W.F. Raynolds, United States Engineers. The author preserved the "List of Specimens" tabulated in the original report, and extended the list with additional material from other collection trips in the West to compile what amounted to a "treatise on the Ornithology of the Western Territories," a desire expressed by F.V. Hayden to Coues.

Trends and Traditions by W. David Shuford,Robert E. Gill (Jr.),Colleen M. Handel Pdf
The status of the rich avifauna of western North America is ever changing in response to human influences, geomorphic processes, and natural climatic variation. Documenting and synthesizing the patterns, rate, and causes of these changes is crucial for the conservation of birds in this region, particularly in a time of rapid climate change, expanding human population, and accelerated resource extraction. To that end, a symposium on avifaunal change was held at Western Field Ornithologists' annual conference in San Diego, California, in October 2014, which formed the basis for the current volume. The papers herein emphasize the overarching themes of the effects of extensive habitat loss and degradation on the avifauna of the West in the 19th and 20th centuries and the responses of birds to environmental change and variation. Several papers portray rays of hope, documenting reversals of trends in the loss of some important habitats, the recovery of some avian populations in response to management, and resiliency in other species as they adapt to novel habitats. Others express increasing concern for the potential future effects of a rapidly changing climate. Most emphasize the importance of long-term monitoring of the population trends, distribution, and ecological attributes of the region's birdlife. The geographical representation and bird species or groups covered varies widely. Collectively these papers should aid in the long-term conservation of the region's birdlife.--
