Crow Winter by Karen McBride Pdf

Nanabush. A name that has a certain weight on the tongue—a taste. Like lit sage in a windowless room or aluminum foil on a metal filling. Trickster. Storyteller. Shape-shifter. An ancient troublemaker with the power to do great things, only he doesn’t want to put in the work. Since coming home to Spirit Bear Point First Nation, Hazel Ellis has been dreaming of an old crow. He tells her he’s here to help her, save her. From what, exactly? Sure, her dad’s been dead for almost two years and she hasn’t quite reconciled that grief, but is that worth the time of an Algonquin demigod? Soon Hazel learns that there’s more at play than just her own sadness and doubt. The quarry that’s been lying unsullied for over a century on her father’s property is stirring the old magic that crosses the boundaries between this world and the next. With the aid of Nanabush, Hazel must unravel a web of deceit that, if left untouched, could destroy her family and her home on both sides of the Medicine Wheel.

Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians by Alan Merriam Pdf

All people, in no matter what culture, must be able to place their music firmly in the context of the totality of their beliefs, experiences, and activities, for without such ties, music cannot exist. This means that there must be a body of theory connected with any music system - not necessarily a theory of the structure of music sound, although that may be present as well, but rather a theory of what music is, what it does, and how it is coordinated with the total environment, both natural and cultural, in which human beings move. The Flathead Indians of Western Montana (just over 26,000 in number as of the 2000 census) inhabit a reservation consisting of 632,516 acres of land in the Jocko and Flathead Valleys and the Camas Prairie country, which lie roughly between Evaro and Kalispell, Montana. The reservation is bounded on the east by the Mission Range, on the west by the Cabinet National Forest, on the south by the Lolo National Forest, and on the north by an arbitrary line, approximately bisecting Flathead Lake about twenty-four miles south of Kalispell. The area is one of the richest agricultural regions in Montana, and fish and game are abundant. The Flathead are engaged in stocking, timbering, and various agricultural enterprises. For the Flathead, the most important single fact about music and its relationship to the total world is its origin in the supernatural sphere. All true and proper songs, particularly in the past, owe their origin to a variety of contacts experienced by humans with beings which, though a part of this world, are superhuman and the source of both individual and tribal powers and skills. Thus a sharp distinction is drawn by the Flathead between what they call "make-up" and all other songs. Merriam's pioneering work in the relationship of ethnography and musicology remains a primary source in this field in anthropology.

Winter Spirit by Don Iannone Pdf

Winter Spirit is a collection of photographs and poems honoring the power and beauty of the winter season. This book was created for two audiences: the general reader wishing to deepen his or her appreciation for winter as a season of the year; and the reader with a special interest in photography and poetry as artistic tools promoting inspiration, insight, and healing. Chapter VI will be of special interest to this second audience. All of the photographs in this book were created by me in Northeast Ohio, showing off nature's winter artwork in places such as The Holden Arboretum, Cleveland Metroparks, Geauga County's Amish Country, Lake Metroparks, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Downtown Cleveland, and along the shores of Lake Erie. Many of the poems found in this book relate directly to the photographs, while others speak to the symbolism of winter and what it represents to the human experience in psychological and spiritual terms. The book combines my own poetry and the poems of several famous early poets, including Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, James Kavanaugh, William Shakespeare, Wallace Stevens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edward Thomas, and W. B. Yeats.Winter Spirit has been an artistic and learning journey for me. I hope this book adds to your appreciation for the winter season, and that its images and poems touch you deeply.

People of the Dalles by Robert Boyd Pdf

People of The Dalles is the story of the Chinookan (Wasco-Wishram) and Sahaptin peoples of The Dalles area of the Columbia River, who encountered the Lewis & Clark expedition in 1805?6. The early history and culture of these communitiesøis reconstructed from the accounts of explorers, travelers, and the early writings of the Methodist missionaries at Wascopam, in particular the papers of Reverend Henry Perkins. Boyd covers early nineteenth century cultural geography, subsistence, economy, social structure, life-cycle rituals, and religion. People of The Dalles also details the changes that occurred to these people's traditional life-ways, including their relationship with Methodism following the devastating epidemics of the early 1830s. Today, descendants of the Chinookan and Sahaptin peoples are enrolled in the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and the Yakama Nation.

Spirit Moon by William Sarabande Pdf

The First Americans Saga continues... As the retreating ice age scars the land, old rivalries between the survivors threaten the first Americans. As the Age of Ice ends, the People must follow a new path for survival. Led by their powerful headman Tôrnârssuk, they begin a treacherous journey to the Great River of the White Whales, where they hope to hunt, trade, and reunite with friendly tribes. But a young shaman has foreseen a sign of doom. Tôrnârssuk is filled with grave doubts. A fierce wildfire, a blood-red moon, and rumors of a great white mammoth could foretell the death of the People. Tôrnârssuk also faces treachery from both within and without his clan. There are those who believe he has lost his ability as headman. Even as he leads his people through danger, an enemy is waiting for him with a plan that could break not only Tôrnârssuk but the uneasy truce that exists between the northern Inuits and the forest dwellers. Soon clan could turn against clan, and brother against brother, in the bitterest struggle for survival. Bestselling author William Sarabande has once again captured the fierce and savage splendor of a prehistoric continent--and at the same time painted a vivid and unforgettable portrait of our first American ancestors in a bold and magnificent novel filled with adventure, treachery, discovery, and courage.
