The Works of Thomas Goodwin by Thomas Goodwin Pdf

Thomas Goodwin was a prolific author and editor. During the 1630s he coedited with John Ball the works of John Preston and Richard Sibbes. He began to publish his own sermons in 1636. Prior to his death, he had published at least twelve devotional works, most of which were collections of sermons. The fact that they were reissued forty-seven times indicates the high demand and wide circulation of his publications. Most of Goodwin's major theological writings were the fruit of his riper years and were published posthumously. His unusually large corpus of treatises display a pastoral and scholarly zeal rivaled by few Puritans. Goodwin represents the best of Puritanism in addressing the intellect, will, and heart. His writings reveal the vigor of earlier Puritans such as William Perkins and Richard Sibbes as well as the mature thought of later Puritan divines, supremely represented by Owen.

Why Heaven Kissed Earth by Mark Jones Pdf

In short, the central argument of this study posits that Goodwin's Christology is grounded in, and flows out of, the eternal covenant of redemption, also known as the pactum salutis or »counsel of peace«. That is to say, his Christology does not begin in the temporal realm at the incarnation, but stretches back into eternity when the persons of the Trinity covenanted to bring about the salvation of fallen mankind. Goodwin's Christology moves from the pretemporal realm to the temporal realm with a decidedly eschatological thrust, that is, with a view to the glory of the God-man, Jesus Christ. What this work does is connect two vital aspects of Reformed theology, namely, the doctrine of Christ and the concept of the covenant. The findings of this study show that, for Goodwin, Christ is the Christ of the covenant.

Not illustrated. 1863 edition. Excerpt: ... BOOK II. Of the first estate of men and angels by their creation.--What were the laws and rights of creation; and what was equitably due between the Creator and his creature.--Of the state of the first man Adam in innocence, and what were his circumstances in that fits primitive condition. CHAPTER I. What was the law of creation on God's part ?--It was but what became and was worthy of the great Creator to do all for his creatures that such a religion* required.--This consisted in two things: First, To endow them with the image of holiness, to qualify than to attain their designed end, which was to know, love, and enjoy him; Secondly, To continue his goodness and favour to them as long as they continued in their duty and obedience.-- The condition of both angels and men by the law of their creation common and equal for substance. My design in this discourse is, in the end, to magnify the supercreation grace of God in election, and the glory of Christ as our head and a Saviour, which was to be revealed upon our fallen condition, though ordained afore all worlds. And I judged it greatly conducible to this end to begin next to set out the right and true measure of our state and condition by virtue of our first creation, as wo came forth out of God's hands first, with the dues and privileges belonging to it, and not of ours only, but of the angels by their first creation; by the view and compare of which we shall be capacitated and enabled to destroy an infinite weight of that supercreation grace added by election, that was ordained us, as it were, over the head of mero natural or creation goodness. And we shall find that it is not only that we are sinful and fallen, that affords matter and occasion to exalt supernatural grace, but even...

An Old Testament Theology by Bruce K. Waltke Pdf

The Old Testament is more than a religious history of the nation of Israel. It is more than a portrait gallery of heroes of the faith. It is even more than a theological and prophetic backdrop to the New Testament. Beyond these, the Old Testament is inspired revelation of the very nature, character, and works of God. As renowned Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke writes in the preface of this book, the Old Testament’s every sentence is “fraught with theology, worthy of reflection.” This book is the result of decades of reflection informed by an extensive knowledge of the Hebrew language, the best of critical scholarship, a deep understanding of both the content and spirit of the Old Testament, and a thoroughly evangelical conviction. Taking a narrative, chronological approach to the text, Waltke employs rhetorical criticism to illuminate the theologies of the biblical narrators. Through careful study, he shows that the unifying theme of the Old Testament is the “breaking in of the kingdom of God.” This theme helps the reader better understand not only the Old Testament, but also the New Testament, the continuity of the entire Bible, and ultimately, God himself.
