The Cutting Edge by Mark A. Lorell,Hugh P. Levaux,Elizabeth Giddens,Jennifer Gross,Erik Moller Pdf

The proposition that innovation is critical in the cost-effective design and development of successful military aircraft is still subject to some debate. RAND research indicates that innovation is promoted by intense competition among three or more industry competitors. Given the critical policy importance of this issue in the current environment of drastic consolidation of the aerospace defense industry, the authors here examine the history of the major prime contractors in developing jet fighters since World War II. They make use of an extensive RAND database that includes nearly all jet fighters, fighter-attack aircraft, and bombers developed and flown by U.S. industry since 1945, as well as all related prototypes, modifications, upgrades, etc. The report concludes that (1) experience matters, because of the tendency to specialize and thus to develop system-specific expertise; (2) yet the most dramatic innovations and breakthroughs came from secondary or marginal players trying to compete with the industry leaders; and (3) dedicated military R&D conducted or directly funded by the U.S. government has been critical in the development of new higher-performance fighters and bombers.

Illustrated with hundreds of detailed artworks of aircraft and their markings, Modern Military Aircraft is a comprehensive study of the fighting aircraft of every nationality from the beginning of the Cold War to the present. The book is split into two volumes, the first detailing aircraft in the Cold War era, and the second outlining aircraft from 1990 to the present day. Chapters are divided by theatre, then further subdivided by conflict and nationality. The first volume provides a comprehensive study of the airplanes in service with NATO and the Warsaw Pact from the end of World War II until the reunification of Germany in 1989. Famous aircraft employed in various Cold War conflicts are included, such as the Gloster Meteor, MiG-17, and Republic F-84 Thunderstreak, as well as lesser-known models, such as the Yak 23 and Shenyang F-6. The second volume provides a detailed analysis of aircraft since 1990, including ubiquitous workhorses such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon, Dassault Rafale, and MiG-21, as well as the latest in aviation technology, such as the Eurofighter EF2000, Sukhoi Su-30, and F-22A Raptor. Every type of aircraft is included, from frontline fighters, through transports, attack helicopters, reconnaissance aircraft, long-range bombers, and stealth fighters. Canadian Warbirds - Jets and Helicopters by Harold A. Skaarup Pdf

This aviation handbook is intended to provide the reader with a quick reference to the major types of military jet aircraft and helicopters flown by the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army, and the Canadian Forces in the post-war jet-age. The handbooks in this series include a general description and a photograph from the Canadian Forces Archives of at least one of the key variants or marks of each aircraft that has been in Canadian military service. Each aircraft is listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. General details describing the aircraft’s engines, service ceiling, speed, armament or weapons load are included, along with a brief description of the Canadian squadron which flew the aircraft. This is the sixth volume in this series. It describes the jet fighters, bombers, trainers and transports as well as the helicopters flown by Canadians in the post-WWII jet-age. A list of museums, private aircraft collections and other locations where a number of the survivors might be found is also included. The handbook is not a definitive list of all Canadian-manufactured or operated aircraft, but should serve as a quick reminder for anyone with an interest in Canadian military aviation.

Modern Military Aircraft by Jim Winchester Pdf

Modern Military Aircraft is a comprehensive guide to the world's fighting aircraft since World War II, from the earliest jet fighters and basic piston-engined bombers, to today's high-tech and stealthy superfighters. Aircraft featured include: the F-86 Sabre, which fought its way to convincing victory over Russia's MiG-15 in the world's first jet-versus-jet battles in Korea; the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the deadliest fleet fighter ever built, which has played an important part in the conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries; and Russia's export miracles the Sukhoi Su-27, currently in service with air arms across the world in an array of variants. This book contains detailed features on more than 220 combat aircraft and helicopters from the past 65 years. Presented alphabetically by manufacturer, each aircraft is covered in detail, with feature boxes outlining its development, technical specifications, performance data and variants. Unique graphics allow the reader to compare specific features like firepower, troop-carrying capacity, and bombload with those of other aircraft of the same type.
