Religion and American Culture by David G. Hackett Pdf

Religion and American Culture challenges the religion's traditional emphasis on older European, American, male, middle-class, Protestant, northeastern narratives concerned primarily with churches and theology. Breaking through the field with multicultural tales of Native American, African Americans and other groups that cut across boundaries of gender, class, religion and region, David Hackett's anthology offers an illuminating and comprehensive overview of the most exciting work currently underway in this field.

An Argument for the Truth of Christianity by Isaac Dowd Williamson Pdf

Excerpt from An Argument for the Truth of Christianity: In a Series of Discourses Tan author of these discourses has long seen with regret, a spirit of scepticism at work in community, and strong exertions making to destroy faith in the gospel of Christ. Being set for the defence of the gospel, he has deemed it a privilege and a duty, to labour both in public and in private, to deepen men's convictions of the inestimable value and substantial trudi of Chris tianity. He has not been an inattentive observer of the efforts of infidels and their mode of warfare. In former times it was an object with them to array science against the gospel, and hence they assumed at least a show of learning. This attempt has been thwarted, and by many able works it has been made to appear that every discovery of genuine science is in harmony with Chris tianity. Within a few years past their mode of warfare has changed. The schools are not now the objects of their attacks. They have left the schools and gone to the common people and the leading object now ap pears to be, to array reason against religion. Under these circumstances the author has thought that it would be useful to make an effort to meet them here, auhshnwthat sound reason approves and sanctions the t of our salvation. With these views, early in his I: in the ministry, he prepared and delivered the or draft of these discourses, without however the intention of giving them to the public througn the Since that time, he has been repeatedly urged by in whose judgment he confides, to revise' and p them for the press. This work he has finally a plished, and with their numerous imperfections are now submitted to the public. The author is that they may possess little interest for the ls student in theology. He claims not the ability struct such. He has written for the unlearned t tian, and if his work shall in any good degree sta en the weak, confirm the feeble, or reclaim the dou he will be satisfied that he has not laboured in Though his work in its execution may be more h than others, he flatters himself that it will not] less useful on that account. His ardent prayer i by this effort he may do some good in the name of t Jesus our Loni. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Whatsoever Things Are True by James Henley Thornwell Pdf

These seven Discourses on Truth were written and preached in the Spring of 1851 from the text, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, think on these things." Philippians 4:8. They were delievered at the Chapel of the College at Columbia, South Carolina, by James Henley Thornwell who was serving as both President and Chaplain. "Thornwell is a giant and nowhere is his mental and spiritual strength seen better than in his treatment of ethics. His application of Scripture to all of life is illuminating and exemplary. Discourses on Truth deserves to be a standard reference." - Dr. Nick Willborn "Thornwell abounds with riches of multifaceted brilliance. Theology, biblical interpretation, philosophy, ethics all take on an attractive hue under the pen of Thornwell. His essays on truth perhaps are more relevant now than when he first wrote them. An age that sees truth as personal, subjective, and existential [therefore relative] needs the clear light of Thornwell's Discourses. Christian will learn to think about the glory of having truth, living by truth, and receive new conviction in the task of the propagation of truth." - Dr. Tom J. Nettles

Discourses and Sayings of Our Lord by John Brown Pdf

Excerpt from Discourses and Sayings of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated in a Series of Expositions IT is a growing conviction in my mind, that vital and influential Christianity consists, much more than is ordi marily apprehended, in an intimate personal acquaintance and friendship with our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the great revealer of God; he is the revealed Divinity. The man knows the Father who knows the Son - that man alone knows the Father. Christ is himself the way, the truth, and the life and it is only in so far as we really know and love him, that we are in the way, or that the truth and the life are in us. Narrative Factuality by Monika Fludernik,Marie-Laure Ryan Pdf

The study of narrative—the object of the rapidly growing discipline of narratology—has been traditionally concerned with the fictional narratives of literature, such as novels or short stories. But narrative is a transdisciplinary and transmedial concept whose manifestations encompass both the fictional and the factual. In this volume, which provides a companion piece to Tobias Klauk and Tilmann Köppe’s Fiktionalität: Ein interdisziplinäres Handbuch, the use of narrative to convey true and reliable information is systematically explored across media, cultures and disciplines, as well as in its narratological, stylistic, philosophical, and rhetorical dimensions. At a time when the notion of truth has come under attack, it is imperative to reaffirm the commitment to facts of certain types of narrative, and to examine critically the foundations of this commitment. But because it takes a background for a figure to emerge clearly, this book will also explore nonfactual types of narratives, thereby providing insights into the nature of narrative fiction that could not be reached from the narrowly literary perspective of early narratology.
