Thinning Western Larch (Classic Reprint) by Arthur L. Roe Pdf

Excerpt from Thinning Western Larch Overstocking threatens production on more than 1 million acres of western larch (larix occidentalis Nutt.) in the northern Rocky Mountains Dense stands have developed on favorable seedbeds found on many large burns and cutover areas in this region. The great number of stems in many of these stands precludes Optimum growth and development of individual trees because growth is being distributed over too many stems per acre. These trees are likely to remain overcrowded for long periods if stands are unmanaged. Trees in such stands will not reach commercially desirable size within a reasonable time. The obvious solution to the over stocking problem is thinning. Few western larch stands have been thinned, and little information has been published on thinnings in larch. Forest managers are now guided principally by information developed in other forest types This paper reports results of two western larch thinning studies located on the Lolo National Forest in western Montana. Briefly, the results show that diameter, basal area, height, and cubic-foot volume growth can be improved by thinning. Concentrating growth on fewer trees per acre Will produce larger trees earlier. Influence of Thinning on Wood Density and Branch Size of Young Western Larch by Udo H. Sauter,Forintek Canada Corp. Western Laboratory Pdf

Reductions of stand densities by precommercial thinning has become an important management tool to establish stabilized stands of western larch and to concentrate stand growth potential on fewer trees. The intent of the study reported was to provide basic information on the relationship between tree spacing and the two major wood quality parameters, wood density and branch size, to support stand management decisions. Wood density profiles and branch measurements were obtained from sample trees chosen from four Montana sites representing different stocking levels. Results are presented and discussed with regard to such parameters as tree height, diameter, tree volume, wood density, branch size, and the use of one- and two-stage thinning.

Growth of Young Even-Aged Western Larch Stands After Thinning in Eastern Oregon (Classic Reprint) by K. W. Seidel Pdf

Excerpt from Growth of Young Even-Aged Western Larch Stands After Thinning in Eastern Oregon Although utilization of this species is increasing, there is little growth and yield information available from managed stands to aid the forest manager in thinning operations in pole-sized stands. In 1966, a study designed to provide basic information on the response of pure even - aged larch stands to a wide range of stocking levels was begun in northeastern Oregon. This interim report covers the first 5 - year period of the study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
