Thoughts on the Religious Instruction of the Negroes of This Country (Classic Reprint) by William S. Plumer Pdf

Excerpt from Thoughts on the Religious Instruction of the Negroes of This Country Many centuries ago, a holy seer said, "Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hand unto God." In view of the fulfilment of this prophecy, the royal bard called for a song of universal praise. The words next succeeding this prediction are, "Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth: O sing praises unto the Lord." The writings of Jeremiah inform us who the Ethiopians were, when he speaks of them as contra-distinguished from the rest of the race by their colour, as the leopard is from the rest of the feline tribe by his spots. The first step in the providence of God towards an amelioration of the spiritual condition of the negro race was their dispersion among other races of mankind. This work, both cruel and bloody, had not been completed, when Christian philanthropy, ever vigilant, sought them out in bondage, and bore to them the cup of divine consolation, which the gospel offers to all, and especially to the sons of sorrow. As early as the year 1732, the United Brethren commenced missions to the negroes in the Danish West Indies, viz., St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. Jan. In 1754 they began their labours in Jamaica: in 1756 in Antigua: in 1765 in Barbadoes: in 1775 in St. Kitts: in 1790 in Tobago. In 1735 they began their labours among the free negroes of Surinam, and in 1736 they commenced a mission in South Africa. The same zeal led the same people to labour amongst the slaves at and near Paramaribo. One mission was at Paramaribo and one at Sommelsdyke. The difficulty of establishing the first missions among the negroes can scarcely now be conceived. This difficulty was neither blindly contemned, nor timidly feared. With a zeal which Christ knows how to reward, "two of the Brethren at Hernhutth offered to sell themselves as slaves, should they find no other way of obtaining an opportunity of instructing the negroes." Not illustrated. 1842 edition. Excerpt: ... PART I . Historical Sketch of the Religious Instruction of the Negroes from their first introduction into the Country in 1620 to the year 1842. CHAPTER I. The First Period -- From their first Introduction, in 1620, to the first Census, in 1790: a period of 170 years. Such is the scarcity of materials, and the difficulty of arriving at the scattered sources of information, that I have called the following Historical Notice of the Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States, "A Sketch." It deserves no better name, although, perhaps, it may embody the principal facts on the subject. For the sake of perspicuity, the Sketch is divided into Periods Of Time -- the First Period, extending from the Introduction of the Negroes into the Country, in 1620, to the first Census, in 1790; a period of 170 years: the Second Period, from 1790 to 1820; a period of 30years: and the Third Period, from 1820 to 1842; a period of 22 years. 1. Account of the Introduction of Negroes into the the Colonies under the Government of Great Britain. It was in the year 1501 that Isabella of Spain granted permission for the introduction of Negro slaves into Hispaniola; but such only as had been born in Spain, or in slavery among Christians; and in the following year a few had been sent into the New World. In 1508 the Spaniards opened a direct trade in slaves, &nd imported Negroes into Hispaniola from the Portugese settlements on the Coast of Guinea. Ferdinand V., by royal ordinance, enjoined a direct traffic in slaves between Guinea and Hispaniola, in 1511, and Charles V., in 1512-13. In 1517 Charles V. granted a patent to one of his Flemish favorites, containing an exclusive right of importing slaves, four thousand annually, into Hispaniola, Cuba, Jamaica, ...

The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States by Charles Colcock Jones by Charles Colcock Jones Pdf

The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States by Charles Colcock Jones Sr. was published in 1843. The book includes four parts, the first giving a history of the African slave trade. Colcock, himself a minister and plantation owner, called on slave owners and ministers to provide religious instruction to slaves. Charles Colcock Jones Sr. (1804-1863) was a Presbyterian clergyman, educator, missionary, and planter of Liberty County, Georgia. The son of a merchant and planter with deep roots in coastal Georgia, Charles Colcock Jones, Sr. was born on December 20, 1804, at Liberty Hall, his father's plantation in Liberty County. While studying to be a minister in the North, Jones agonized over the morality of owning slaves, but he returned to Liberty County to become a planter, a fervent missionary to the slaves, sometimes called the "Apostle to Slaves," and a somewhat reluctant defender of the institution of slavery. Besides many tracts and papers, Jones published several books including The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States (1842), an appeal to slave owners and ministers to provide religious instruction to slaves. His brother-in-law wrote that Jones "did more than any other man in arousing the whole church of this country to a new interest in the spiritual welfare of the Africans in our midst."

The Religious Instruction of the Negroes by Charles Colcock Jones Pdf

Slavery and racism in the United States run hand in hand and the silver screen is littered with dramatic representations of the hot, hazy environment of the Slave States at their height. The popular imagination is familiar with the white plantation house, the sugar cane and the cotton. Those who seek to peer deeper into the ways in which the people who filled those palaces and piles thought will be well served by 'The Religious Instruction of the Negroes'. As a Presbyterian minister and the son of a Plantation owner, Charles Colcock Jones is the epitome of the establishment voice for this time and place. His reflections will run profoundly counter to the modern reader's sense of human equality but the ways in which he does and does not allow the humanity of the black population are in themselves fascinating. Read the praise he has for 'colored ministers' but brace for the descriptions of the flaws he believes he sees in the black population of the plantations he has visited. He explores largely by accident the economic realities of the plantation, the requirements of the work force, the rhythms of the seasons, the high days and holidays. He takes a particularly pragmatic approach to proselytising, ready to sell down the river any denominational quirks for the overall objective of transmitting what he saw as the core elements of Christian doctrine. The twin threads of socially enforced bigotry and radicalism run through this tract and the opportunity to see that cognitive dissonance and step into the 19th century should not be missed. The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States (Classic Reprint) by Charles Colcock Jones Pdf

Charles Colcock Jones wrote The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States as an extended sermon encouraging white clergymen and those who owned slaves to pay attention to religious instruction for their slaves and free black people in their areas. The first part focuses on Jones' perception of the development of the population of slaves and free men across each state. The second portion shows a fascinatingly paternalistic critique of both slaves and slave owners by first criticising the black population for their lack of Christian virtue but rounding on the owners of slaves for failing to provide adequate religious opportunities. Whilst he certainly feels that the black population are ultimately morally dependent on the goodness of white, Christian men, he clearly wrestles with the knowledge that something in the social system is responsible for the discord and difficulty he associates with vice. Charles C Jones is, whilst clearly and unacceptably biased to modern readers, a valuable insight into the cognitive dissonance maintained by prominent members of the slave owning establishment in the United States during his time. He argues systematically for a system of education for slaves whilst consistently underestimating the use that education has historically been put to by oppressed peoples. The awareness of his context's immorality lurks on the edges of his consciousness, never quite surfacing. All readers will come away from the book with a new determination to interrogate cultural norms, established traditions and conventional wisdom.
