Three Biographies of Lewis Carroll by Stuart Dodgson Collingwood,Belle Moses,Isa Bowman Pdf

"The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll" by Stuart Dodgson Collingwood "Lewis Carroll in Wonderland and at Home" by Belle Moses "The Story of Lewis Carroll" by Isa Bowman The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll is a biography written by Carroll's nephew and published only 11 months after his death in December 1898. It accidentally started the entire image of Lewis Carroll as a pedophile by deliberately suppressing all the evidence for his sometimes unconventional relationships with women, explaining that some of those women had been little girls... Lewis Carroll in Wonderland and at Home: The Story of His Life was published in 1910. It is a biography of Lewis Carroll written by Belle Moses. The Story of Lewis Carroll was published in 1899 and was written by Isa Bowman, an actress. Her title was based on the fact that she had once — thanks to Dodgson's influence — played Alice on stage. Her book was a memoir of her relationship with her "uncle" and benefactor. Stuart Dodgson Collingwood (1870–1937) was an English clergyman and headmaster. He wrote two books about his uncle, Lewis Carroll. Belle Moses (1834 – 1891), was an author of a memoir about Lewis Carroll and a mother of Robert Moses, "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City. Isa Bowman (1874–1958) was an actress, a close friend of Lewis Carroll and author of a memoir about his life, The Story of Lewis Carroll, Told for Young People by the Real Alice in Wonderland.

Lewis Carroll: Biography of the Author of Alice in Wonderland by Steven Needham Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK Lewis Carroll was a nineteenth century writer from England who is best known for writing Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, the strange and sublime tale of a little girl who is transported to another world when she falls down a magical rabbit hole. Carroll created such classic characters as The Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and The Queen of Hearts. Carroll is also well known for his style of nonsense poetry, as exemplified by his famous poems "Jabberwocky" and "The Hunting of the Snark." Besides his famous writings, Carroll was also a mathematician, photographer, lecturer and clergyman and his written works have received much attention from scholars for over a century. Carroll ostensibly wrote Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and the sequel, Through the Looking Glass, for children. However, these books are also beloved by many adults due to their complicated and subtle nature. Some critics feel that Carroll was actually writing for an adult audience, while others believe his works were a defense of children. Carroll may have believed that children were capable of much more complicated thought processes than was generally recognized during his lifetime. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Scholar Aila Malkki from the University of Helsinki wrote in her essay, "Translating Emotions Across Time: Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," that Dodgson was aware of these cultural constraints and addressed them in his book. Malkki wrote, "Witnessing the strange turns of conversation (for example, in Chapter VII during the Mad Tea-Party) parallels the efforts to find out how to deal with the rules in the Victorian era. Furthermore, the dream setting emphasizes the striking contrast between the restrictions of the community and the boundless dream world." Because Dodgson's book was a work of fantasy for children, the normal societal rules did not apply. Dodgson was particularly successful in the world of academics during his lifetime. Because he wrote his children's fiction under the pen name Lewis Carroll, he was able to separate fully his literary life from his life in academics. In 1851, his excellence in the discipline of mathematics paid off when Dodgson was awarded a Boulter Scholarship, which was worth twenty pounds a year. Upon graduation, he received a Second Class in classics and a First Class in mathematics and as a consequence in 1852 he was awarded a fellowship of twenty-five pounds a year for the rest of his life... Lewis Carroll & His Illustrators by Morton Norton Cohen,Edward Wakeling Pdf

This new collection of the letters that Lewis Carroll wrote to the illustrators and prospective illustrators of his books affords fresh insights into Carroll's complex character, traces the history of the books that became great classics of the Victorian era, and charts the sometimes tempestuous seas of Carroll's relationships with his correspondents. Carroll, a meticulous artist, made detailed demands upon his illustrators, who included John Tenniel, Henry Holiday, Arthur Burdett Frost, Harry Furniss, and Gertrude Thomson.Lewis Carroll and His Illustrators reveals the author as an expert in the details of book production in an age in which new technologies repeatedly altered the publishing process. Morton N. Cohen and Edward Wakeling's general introduction to the volume looks at Lewis Carroll the man and touches on his place in Victorian publishing. Each group of letters is preceded by an introduction that includes a brief biography of the artist and a summary of his or her collaboration with Carroll. Many of the letters include Carroll's own sketches as aids to his collaborators. Comparison of these sketches with the artists' final drawings, also included, shed light on the genesis of the illustrations. Some letters from the illustrators to Carroll, also printed here, add greater insight into the process.
