The Future of 3D TV by Anita Theis Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 1+, Stenden University, language: English, abstract: This research paper answers the question of whether 3D TV will become a new trend or if it is a hype that will eventually fail to establish itself. The paper is divided into a market research and a target group research. Both deal with the situation within the United States as the US has one of the highest market shares in 3D globally. 3D TV was introduced in 2010 and within that year the 3D TV sales made out 4% (3.2mio) of all TV sales. Within the US, 3% of the households purchased a 3D TV so far. According to E. Rogers' book "Diffusion of Innovation" whose theory is used as a guideline throughout the whole research paper, those 3% make out the category of innovators. The 3D TV technology has to face economic, sociological and technological challenges. Those challenges as well as the trends and developments influence the adoption of the technology. Those influencing aspects can be grouped into five categories: relative advantage, compatibility, complexibility, observability and trialability. The research determines how the different aspects concerning the 3D technology influence these categories in order to come up with possible forecast of 3D TV. The relative advantage is mainly influenced by the target group's perception of 3D TV. While 3D TV aims to add an experience domain to the traditional experience of 2D TV, this is not especially valued among the target group. The price of 3D TV sets however does play a significant role - many consider the prices of 3D as too high. However the experience teaches that the prices are likely to decrease due to the price setting strategy called "price-skimming". The most important factor concerning compatibility is the unfavorable launch-date of 3D TVs in the US. On the positive side, the increased production of 3D content that fits the target group's profile makes 3D perfectly

3D Television (3DTV) Technology, Systems, and Deployment by Daniel Minoli Pdf

Going beyond the technological building blocks of 3DTV, 3D Television (3DTV) Technology, Systems, and Deployment: Rolling Out the Infrastructure for Next-Generation Entertainment offers an early view of the deployment and rollout strategies of this emerging technology. It covers cutting-edge advances, theories, and techniques in end-to-end 3DTV systems to provide a system-level view of the topic and what it takes to make this concept a commercial reality. The book reflects the full-range of questions being posed about post-production 3D mastering, delivery options, and home screens. It reviews fundamental visual concepts supporting stereographic perception of 3DTV and considers the various stages of a 3DTV system including capture, representation, coding, transmission, and display. Presents new advances in 3DTV and display techniques Includes a 24-page color insert Identifies standardization activities critical to broad deployment Examines a different stage of an end-to-end 3DTV system in each chapter Considers the technical details related to 3DTV—including compression and transmission technologies Discussing theory and application, the text covers both stereoscopic and autostereoscopic techniques—the latter eliminating the need for special glasses and allowing for viewer movement. It also examines emerging holographic approaches, which have the potential to provide the truest three-dimensional images. The book contains the results of a survey of a number of advocacy groups to provide a clear picture of the current state of the industry, research trends, future directions, and underlying topics.

A History of Three-Dimensional Cinema by David A. Cook Pdf

A History of Three-Dimensional Cinema chronicles 3-D cinema as a single, continuous and coherent medium, proceeding from 19th-century experiments in stereoscopic photography and lantern projection (1839–1892) to stereoscopic cinema’s “long novelty period” (1893–1952). It proceeds to examine the first Hollywood boom in anaglyphic stereo (1953–1955), when the mainstream industry produced 69 features in 3-D, mostly action films that could exploit the depth illusion, but also a handful of big-budget films—for example, Kiss Me Kate (George Sidney, 1953) and Dial M for Murder (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954)—until audiences tired of the process; the anaglyphic revival of 1970–1985, when 3-D was sustained as a novelty feature in sensational genres like soft-core pornography and horror; the age of IMAX 3-D (1986–2008); the current era of digital 3-D cinema, which began in 2009 when James Cameron’s Avatar became the highest-grossing feature of all time and the studios once again stampeded into 3-D production; and finally the future promise of Virtual Reality.

Television Aesthetics by Nikos Metallinos Pdf

USE FIRST TWO PARAGRAPHS ONLY FOR GENERAL CATALOGS... This volume offers a response to three ongoing needs: * to develop the main composition principles pertinent to the visual commmunication medium of television; * to establish the field of television aesthetics as an extension of the broader field of visual literacy; and * to promote television aesthetics to both students and consumers of television. Based on effective empirical research from three axes -- perception, cognition, and composition -- the aesthetic principles of television images presented are drawn from converging research in academic disciplines such as psychology (perceptual, cognitive, and experimental), neurophysiology, and the fine arts (painting, photography, film, theater, music, and more). Although the aesthetics of the fine arts were traditionally built on contextual theories that relied heavily on subjective evaluation, on critical analyses, and on descriptive research methods, the aesthetics of today's visual communication media consider equally valuable empirical methodologies found in all sciences. Investigations in these different academic disciplines have provided the constructs and strengthened the foundations of the theory of television aesthetics offered in this book. Special features include: * a great variety of pictures supporting the topics discussed; * a thorough, up-to-date, and specifically related bibliography for each of the major parts of the book; * computer drawings illustrating the concepts examined in the text; * scientific data -- tables and charts -- documenting the research findings cited; * simplified explanations of the processes of visual, auditory, and motion perceptions of images, enhanced by specific diagrams; * detailed analyses of the threefold process of stimulation, perception, and recognition of televised images; and * workable, easy-to-understand and use rules of picture composition, visual image evaluations, and television program appreciation.
