A Catalogue of the Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana by Newberry Library Pdf

The Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana consists of some 10,000 books, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, broadsides, broadsheets, and photographs, of which about half are described in the present catalogue. The Graff Collection displays the remarkable breadth of interest, knowledge, and taste of a great bibliophile and student of Western American history. From this rich collection, now in The Newberry Library, Chicago, its former Curator, Colton Storm, has compiled a discriminating and representative Catalogue of the rarer and more unusual materials. Collectors, bibliographers, librarians, historians, and book dealers specializing in Americana will find the Graff Catalogue an interesting and essential tool. Detailed collations and binding descriptions are cited, and many of the more important works have been annotated by Mr. Graff and Mr. Storm. An extensive index of persons and subjects makes the book useful to the scholar as well as to the collector and dealer. The book is not a bibliography but rather a guide to rare or unique source materials now enriching The Newberry Library's outstanding holdings in American history.

Mind of Winter by William W. Bevis Pdf

Bevis addresses the most puzzling and least studied aspect of Wallace Stevens’ poetry: detachment. Stevens’ detachment, often associated by readers with asceticism, bareness, or withdrawal, is one of the distinguishing and pervasive characteristics of Stevens’ poetic work. Bevis agues that this detachment is meditative and therefore experiential in origin. Moreover, the meditative Stevens of spare syntax and clear image is in constant tension with the romantic, imaginative Stevens of dazzling metaphors and exuberant flight. Indeed, for Bevis, Stevens is a poet not of imagination and reality, but of imagination and reality, but of imagination and meditation in relation to reality.

The Fairmount Park Motor Races, 1908-1911 by Michael J. Seneca Pdf

For four years, early in the last century, the Fairmount Park Motor Races were run on an eight-mile course in Philadelphia's West Fairmount Park. They drew half a million spectators the first year, but surprisingly they have been overlooked as part of automobile racing history and as part of the history of Philadelphia. In contrast to other racing events, such as the Vanderbilt Cup, there were never any serious injuries and not a single death, but after four years of spectacular racing, the event was banned, with safety concerns cited. Opening with a brief look at automobile racing prior to 1908, the book covers the events leading up to the first race. It discusses the proposal to have a race in Fairmount Park and the reasons why Philadelphia, and the park in particular, was such an unlikely place. Both the on-track action of the races and the off-track events that affected them are described. Dr. J. William White's successful crusade, following the 1911 outing, to stop the races is examined, as are attempts to revive the race in the following six years, including Philadelphia's attempt to compete with Indianapolis by constructing a two-mile oval speedway, and the city's eventual exit from automobile racing.

Port Alberni by Jan Peterson Pdf

Any community that has ever been labelled a "mill town" carries both the promise of prosperity and the constant threat of collapse, its fortune hinging on a single industry whose performance is as much related to the whims of a global economy as it is to the abundance of a key natural resource. The people of Port Alberni, located deep in Vancouver Island's Alberni Valley, know all too well the highs and lows that come with such a label. Jan Peterson, who lived in Port Alberni for two of the town's most tumultuous decades and worked as a reporter for the Alberni Valley Times, describes how the town's people persevered through three decades of boom and bust, developed a vibrant arts and sporting community, and strived to make life better under any circumstances. From the prosperous 1970s, when Port Alberni earned the reputation of "forestry capital of Canada," to the decline of the industry in the 1980s, when economic uncertainty signalled a need for diversification, to the environmental protests in nearby Clayoquot Sound, which polarized the community, Port Alberni tells the story of Port Alberni from a perspective that is rarely heard. Through fascinating interviews and meticulous historical research, Peterson captures the heart and soul of a town so often defined by dollars and cents.

Ladies Don't Do That! by Jackie MacDonald Pdf

In the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, Jackie MacDonald burst onto the Canadian sport scene with an immense amount of publicity. The tall blond teacher, often compared to Marilyn Monroe, who put the shot, pumped iron and drove a Harley Davidson motorcycle, caught the eye of photographers even before she surprised the track and field community by winning a silver medal in the shot put only one year after she had started the event. When Canadian officials withdrew her from the discus throw at the last minute on suspicion of professionalism, the press erupted in condemnation of the actions of the team managers. She was exonerated a couple of days later, but missed the chance of winning a second medal. She competed in four more international Games, including the 1956 Olympics. A memoir told in four parts, Ladies Don’t Do That! offers insights into the origins of MacDonald’s passion for sports, her competition years in track and field, from the local to the international level and personal endeavours outside of sports including teaching and travelling. Perseverance, commitment, passion and genuine curiosity are central themes to this memoir. No matter what the author devotes herself to, studying linguistics, learning languages, teaching English to refugees as a volunteer, or seeking new experiences, she shows how dedication can yield a rewarding and interesting life. MacDonald exposes the sexism in women’s sport during the 40s and 50s, and the progress that has been made since then. She shows readers that women can do whatever they set their minds to.
