Through One Administration by Frances Hodgson Burnett Pdf

‘Through One Administration’ is a tale like no other. Through the eyes of Bertha Amory, the wife of a 19th century lawyer in Washington D.C., the author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, serves us both romance, women’s rights and American politics. Bertha may be a mother of three and a devoted wife to her husband, but she’s never forgotten the summer when a young soldier came to stay with her and her father, a renowned professor, before heading off to fight a war against the Native Americans. Many years later, the love of that summer returns to Washington D.C. Bertha is torn between the desires of her heart and her duties as a wife and mother. Those who enjoyed the interlacing of romance and political commentary as seen in works by Jane Austen, including titles such as ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Sense and Sensibility’, will not be disappointed by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s ‘Through One Administration’. Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English American playwright and author. Born in the UK in Manchester to a family of ironmongers, she later migrated to the United States where she would go on to write some of her most famous plays and novels. During the span of her career, Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote and published more than 53 novels, most of them for adults. However, she is perhaps best known for her work in children’s literature, including famous titles such as ‘The Little Princess’ (1905), ‘The Secret Garden’ (1911), and ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy’ (1886). Frances Hodgson Burnett is also known for her historical fiction, including acclaimed titles such as 'The Head of the House of Coombe' (1922) and its sequel, 'Robin' (1922). Burnett’s work has been adapted for film many times. The latest movie adaptation of ‘The Secret Garden’ was released in 2020, starring Colin Firth and Julie Walters.

Through one administration by Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett Pdf

A wonderfully powerful and interesting story of modern life and political intrigues in Washington, full of dramatic intensity and vivid portraiture. As a story of Washington life, dealing largely with what might be called social politics, it is certainly a success. As a society novel, it is indeed quite perfect; for while full justice is done to the frivolity and hollowncss of society, and to the fatal effect upon the sweetest and brightest natures of too much society, there is shown delicate appreciation of the fair and noble side of the social culture which both springs from and develops loftiness of nature and generosity of soul.

Through One Administration. By: Frances Hodgson Burnett. a NOVEL by Frances Hodgson Burnett Pdf

Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (24 November 1849 - 29 October 1924) was an English-American novelist and playwright. She is best known for the three children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885-1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, England. After her father died in 1852, the family fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 immigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee. There Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870, her mother died, and in 1872 Frances married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor. The Burnetts lived for two years in Paris, where their two sons were born, before returning to the United States to live in Washington, D.C., Burnett then began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowrie's), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular. She wrote and helped to produce stage versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess. Burnett enjoyed socializing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Beginning in the 1880s, she began to travel to England frequently and in the 1890s bought a home there where she wrote The Secret Garden. Her oldest son, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1890, which caused a relapse of the depression she had struggled with for much of her life. She divorced Swan Burnett in 1898, married Stephen Townsend in 1900, and divorced him in 1902. A few years later she settled in Nassau County, Long Island, where she died in 1924 and is buried in Roslyn Cemetery. In 1936 a memorial sculpture by Bessie Potter Vonnoh was erected in her honour in Central Park's Conservatory Garden. The statue depicts her two famous Secret Garden characters, Mary and Dickon. Childhood in Manchester Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in 1849 at 141 York Street in the Cheetham Hill township of the Borough of Manchester, England. She was the third of five children of Edwin Hodgson, an ironmonger from Doncaster in Yorkshire, and his wife Eliza Boond, from a well-to-do Manchester family. Hodgson owned a business in Deansgate, selling quality ironmongery and brass goods. The family lived comfortably, employing a maid and a nurse-maid.Frances was the middle of the five Hodgson children, with two older brothers and two younger sisters. In 1852 the family moved to a more spacious home with greater access to outdoor space.Barely a year later, with his wife pregnant for a fifth time, Hodgson died of a stroke, leaving the family without income. Frances was cared for by her grandmother while her mother took over running the family business. From her grandmother, who bought her books, Frances learned to love reading, in particular her first book The Flower Book which had coloured illustrations and poems. Because of their reduced income, Eliza had to give up their house and moved with her children to Seedley Grove, near Pendleton; there they lived with relatives in a home that included a large enclosed garden, in which Frances enjoyed playing. For a year Frances went to a small school run by two women, where she first saw a book about fairies. When her mother moved the family to Salford, Frances mourned the lack of flowers and gardens. Their home was located in Islington Square, adjacent to an area with severe overcrowding and poverty, that "defied description", as described by Friedrich Engels who lived in Manchester at the time.

Through One Administration (Classic Reprint) by Frances Hodgson Burnett Pdf

Excerpt from Through One Administration The professor himself seemed to know but little of her. He was a quiet and intensely studious person, taking small interest in the ordinary world and appear ing always slightly surprised when his wife spoke to him'; still, his manner toward her was as gentle and painstaking as if she had been the rarest possible beetle, and the only one of her species to be found in any known collection, though perhaps the interest she awakened in him was not so great as it might have been under such exceptionally favorable circumstances. She was not a brilliant or far-seeing woman, and her Opinions of entomology and, indeed, of science in general, were vague, and obscured by objections to small boxes, glass eases, long pins, and chloroform, and specimens of all orders. From Policy to Administration by J A G Griffith Pdf

First published in 1976, From Policy to Administration is not the conventional Festschrift written by many hands on many unrelated subjects- rather it is a tight collection of essays conceived and written around a unified theme. From one point of view, policy and administration are at two opposite ends of the governmental spectrum; but at the same time both are aspects of almost every single government activity and the essays in this book set out to reflect this apparent paradox. Dr Jones finds symptoms of it at the administrative heart of the policy making machine while Professor Friedrich looks at the nature of that machine and its relation to democratic forms. Four central essays by Professors Bernard Crick, Peter Self, John Mackintosh and Mr Sharpe, link policy making and administration to the controversies about participation, decentralisation, and devolution. Mr Foster considers the public corporation as a dynamic instrument concerned with the problem of efficiency. The book concludes with essays by Professors Mitchell and Griffith on the involvement of legal processes in the structure and functioning of policy and administration. The book does not attempt to cover all of William Robson's interests. It is a mark of the versatility of his genius that no book could do that and remain unified. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of public administration and political studies.
