To Lhasa in Disguise by William Montgomery McGovern Pdf

This is a record of adventures, and of achievements in the face of supposedly insuperable obstacles, which is thrilling by reason of the size and color and significance of the events. Tibet and especially Lhasa, its capital city, is guarded from outsiders by fanatic natives, and the country is further guarded by the giant mountain ranges that hem it in. No white man before Dr. McGovern ever got through the ice-bound Himalaya passes in the winter, and no white man before him ever contrived to live in Lhasa long enough to photograph and study the Tibetans at close range. A party made up to go to Tibet, of which Dr. McGovern was one, was met in the mountains and told to go back. All the rest of the party turned in their tracks and dropped down into India. Dr. McGovern, accompanied only by his servant Satan, continued in disguise into Tibet, arriving ultimately after a series of almost incredible hardships in Lhasa itself. He interviewed the Dalai Lama and other officials and functionaries, studied the people and took innumerable photographs. Dr. McGovern, who by the way was related on his mother’s side to both Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, was an Oxford man, a distinguished Orientalist, a lecturer of the Royal Asiatic Society, and the author of several books dealing with the Far East. He was especially equipped to capitalize in interest and information for his readers the amazing experiences through which he passed.

A Step Away from Paradise by Thomas K. Shor Pdf

WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED... If Lewis Carroll had proclaimed the reality of Alice's Wonderland? What if he had gathered a following & launched an expedition? THE TRUE STORY OF A JOURNEY TO A FANTASTIC LAND IT WAS THE EARLY 1960s. The place, a far-off corner of the Himalayas long fabled in Tibetan tradition to be hiding a valley of immortality among its peaks and glaciers--a real-life Shangri-La. They waited generations for the prophesied lama to come, the one with the secret knowledge of how to 'open' the Hidden Land. Then, one day, he came. His name was Tulshuk Lingpa. THIS BOOK TELLS THE TRUE STORY of this charismatic visionary lama and his remarkable expedition. Against the wishes of the kings of both Sikkim and Nepal, he and over three hundred followers ventured up the snowy slopes of the third highest mountain of the planet. Their aim: to open a crack in the very fabric of reality and go to a land we would all wish to inhabit if it were only there--a land of peace and concord. FORTY YEARS LATER, the author spends over five years tracking down the surviving members of this extraordinary expedition. He deftly weaves their stories together with humor, wisdom, and scholarly research into Tibetan traditions of Hidden Lands, all the while reflecting on what this means for the rest of us. "LIKE NO OTHER BOOK I have ever read...a riveting tale of adventure...honest to the real spirit of Tibet...both unique and intriguing...an engrossing read. Highly recommended." JETSUNMA TENZIN PALMO, from the Foreword From Tulshuk Lingpa's Guidebook to the Hidden Land: "DON'T LISTEN TO ANYBODY. Decide by yourself and practise madness. Develop courage for the benefit of all sentient beings. Then you will automatically be free from the knot of attachment. Then you will continually have the confidence of fearlessness and you can then try to open the Great Door of the Hidden Place." Tibet, Tibet by Patrick French Pdf

At different times in its history Tibet has been renowned for pacifism and martial prowess, enlightenment and cruelty. The Dalai Lama may be the only religious leader who can inspire the devotion of agnostics. Patrick French has been fascinated by Tibet since he was a teenager. He has read its history, agitated for its freedom, and risked arrest to travel through its remote interior. His love and knowledge inform every page of this learned, literate, and impassioned book. Talking with nomads and Buddhist nuns, exiles and collaborators, French portrays a nation demoralized by a half-century of Chinese occupation and forced to depend on the patronage of Western dilettantes. He demolishes many of the myths accruing to Tibet–including those centering around the radiant figure of the Dalai Lama. Combining the best of history, travel writing, and memoir, Tibet, Tibet is a work of extraordinary power and insight.

The Bliss of Inner Fire by Thubten Yeshe Pdf

In the classic bestseller, Introduction to Tantra, Lama Yeshe offered a profound glimpse into the authentic and sophisticated practices of Tibetan Buddhist Tantra. The Bliss of Inner Fire may be considered a perfect follow-up to that book. Lama Yeshe follows Je Tsongkhapa's (1357-1419 a.d.) text, Having the Three Convictions, and introduces the renowned Six Yogas of Naropa, focusing mainly on the first of these six, the practice of "inner fire" (tummo). Mastery of inner fire quickly brings the mind to its most refined and penetrating state ? the experience of clear light, an extra-ordinarily powerful state of mind that is unequaled in its ability to directly realize ultimate reality. Lama Yeshe felt that twentieth-century Westerners could easily grasp the often misunderstood ideas of this esoteric tradition: His aim was for his students to actually taste the experience of inner fire rather than merely gain an intellectual understanding. Lama's own realization of the transformative power of these practices comes through, inspiring his students to discover for themselves their own capacity for inexhaustible bliss.
