Tickling the Dragon's Tail by John Sutherland Pdf

The story begins in 1497, with the marriage and death on the same day, of Jeffrey Thurston; dead by the hand of his new wife. As he lay dying, Jeffrey laid a curse upon both families, hers and his brother's. She thought quickly, and told him, contemptuously, that the curse would not be allowed by the gods unless there was also some means to see it lifted. He was not sure he could believe her, but what if....? He stipulated three impossible conditions. The story moves on almost 450 years to China, where a Japanese officer in the occupying army has been decapitated, as he was about to rape a young western woman. The first of three conditions has been met. It then moves on to a girls' boarding school in England just after WWWII. The necessary conditions to meet the remaining two steps come close to being fulfilled when a male teacher, who was blinded in that war comes into that school, where that young woman from China is now teaching. Neither of these two individuals knows anything of what is about to happen around them, or can understand why they are so strongly drawn to each other.

The Dragon's Tail by Robert A. Jacobs Pdf

When President Harry Truman introduced the atomic bomb to the world in 1945, he described it as a God-given harnessing of "the basic power of the universe." Six days later a New York Times editorial framed the dilemma of the new Atomic Age for its readers: "Here the long pilgrimage of man on Earth turns towards darkness or towards light." American nuclear scientists, aware of the dangers their work involved, referred to one of their most critical experiments as "tickling the dragon's tail." Even after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, most Americans may not have been sure what an atomic bomb was or how it worked. But they did sense that it had fundamentally changed the future of the human race. In this book, Robert Jacobs analyzes the early impact of nuclear weapons on American culture and society. He does so by examining a broad range of stories, or "nuclear narratives," that sought to come to grips with the implications of the bomb's unprecedented and almost unimaginable power. Beginning with what he calls the "primary nuclear narrative," which depicted atomic power as a critical agent of social change that would either destroy the world or transform it for the better, Jacobs explores a variety of common themes and images related to the destructive power of the bomb, the effects of radiation, and ways of surviving nuclear war. He looks at civil defense pamphlets, magazines, novels, and films to recover the stories the U.S. government told its citizens and soldiers as well as those presented in popular culture. According to Jacobs, this early period of Cold War nuclear culture?from 1945 to the banning of above-ground testing in 1963?was distinctive for two reasons: not only did atmospheric testing make Americans keenly aware of the presence of nuclear weapons in their lives, but radioactive fallout from the tests also made these weapons a serious threat to public health, separate from yet directly linked to the danger of nuclear war.

Tickling the Dragon's Tail by Joint Special Operations University Pres,Ned B Marsh Pdf

Lieutenant Colonel Ned Marsh wrote this monograph while attending the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies. He proposes that over time a metaphorical critical mass constructed of global irregular warfare (IW) actors, state and non-state, has developed. The core is now active and exists within an enabling contemporary environmental structure. State warfare hegemony has decreased conventional competition and increased asymmetrical strategies. The result of this has been the emergence of IW as a prominent strategy and a self-propagating chain reaction of IW activity. This activity is releasing increasingly dangerous levels of destabilizing effect. This monograph reviews IW theory and history, and describes the contemporary operational paradigm. It analyzes the effect of cumulative IW activity and discusses prescriptive approaches to the problem. It concludes that, if stability is an objective, then counter-IW must be holistically undertaken with strategies to reduce conventional warfare competition.

Double Threat by Ellin Bessner Pdf

"He died so Jewry should suffer no more." These words on a Canadian Jewish soldier's tombstone in Normandy inspired the author to explore the role of Canadian Jews in the war effort. As PM Mackenzie King wrote in 1947, Jewish servicemen faced a "double threat" - they were not only fighting against Fascism but for Jewish survival. At the same time, they encountered widespread antisemitism and the danger of being identified as Jews if captured. Bessner conducted hundreds of interviews and extensive archival research to paint a complex picture of the 17,000 Canadian Jews - about 10 per cent of the Jewish population in wartime Canada - who chose to enlist, including future Cabinet minister Barney Danson, future game-show host Monty Hall, and comedians Wayne and Shuster. Added to this fascinating account are Jews who were among the so-called "Zombies" - Canadians who were drafted, but chose to serve at home - the various perspectives of the Jewish community, and the participation of Canadian Jewish women.

A SPECK OF ATLANTIS - BIMINI: THE TOP OF GOD'S MOUNTAIN by Norbert H. Kox Pdf

This art book is a visual and written documentation of a modern-day visionary and his journey into the heart of Bimini. It links the Island of Bimini to the lost continent of Atlantis, and contains 149 color images painted on Bimini by internationally acclaimed visionary artist Norbert H. Kox. His writings suggest the probable connection between the last remaining speck of Atlantis and this tiny island in the Atlantic, located directly within the Bermuda Triangle. The writings postulate interdimensional portals and possible time travel (in agreement with quantum physics) explaining subtle energies that interact with and affect our physical world. The research is well documented and the paintings are stunning. The artworks in this book represent eleven years of painting and research on the Island of Bimini, and although they do not all correlate with Atlantis and the energy of the Universe, they are a documentation of Kox's art exhibitions on the Island. (Soft cover, 8 1/2 X 11; 118 pages).

Strike of the Black Mamba by Ian Krüger Pdf

The unthinkable has happened. An environmental organization warned the world against it. Still, nobody believed that it would turn out like this. But Donald Morse proves everyone wrong. Defying all security measures, he manages to steal a shipment of nuclear material from a cargo ship destined for Japan's nuclear power reactors. Could anything be worse than this scenario? Perhaps the fact that Donald Morse knows that South African scientists developed extremely dangerous nuclear weapons during the apartheid years, weapons that the world thought were not possible to construct. Donald has information where these deadly weapons are hidden - and he has plans to get them out. Ken Palmer is sent by the FBI to find Donald Morse and to arrest him. But Ken has to deal with traitors from within as well as onslaughts on his life. However, he discovers the real spine-chilling reason for Donald's need for the nuclear weapons and he realizes that Donald has to be stopped in any way possible.
