Primary and Secondary Ties as They Relate to Formal Support Need and Utilization by Katherine P. Rearden Pdf

This study seeks to advance insight into the mechanics of the social support process by examining the relationships between informal spousal and community ties and one's need for and use of formal social support services. This secondary hierarchical regression data analysis employs cross sectional data that were gathered by the United States Air Force as a stratified, random probability sample of 100,000 active duty military members of which roughly 51% responded to an anonymous mail survey. This study examines the relationship between informal and formal social support in order to develop explanatory models generating causal hypotheses for future investigation. A major gap in the area of informal and formal social support is addressed in that this population is healthy compared to the elderly, physically and mentally ill populations typically examined in the study of informal and formal social support linkages. Regardless of the degree of informal tie, primary (marital) or secondary (community volunteerism) informal support was positively related to both the need for, and the use of; formal support services consistent with complementary theory. Findings suggest that marital status and community volunteerism may not function as sources of informal support in the military population. Rather, marital status and community volunteerism may actually function as sources of formal support in the military culture representing a marked departure from current conceptualizations in social support linkage research. Also positively related to the need for formal support was the number of hours one volunteered in one's community. Conversely, satisfaction with either marital or community informal support predicted less need for formal support. The physical availability of one's marital partner was not related to the need for, nor the use of formal support in an overseas subsi(3g*)

Appalachian Mental Health by Susan E. Keefe Pdf

This volume is the first to explore broadly many important theoretical and applied issues concerning the mental health of Appalachians. The authors -- anthropologists, psychologists, social workers and others -- overturn many assumptions held by earlier writers, who have tended to see Appalachia and its people as being dominated by a culture of poverty. While the heterogeneity of the region is acknowledged in the diversity of sub-areas and populations discussed, dominant themes emerge concerning Appalachia as a whole. The result of the authors' varied approaches is a cumulative portrait of a strong regional culture with native support systems based on family, community, and religion. Some of the contributors examine therapeutic approaches, including family therapy, that consider the implications of the cultural context. Others explore the impact of Appalachian culture on the impact of Appalachian culture on the development of mental health problems and coping skills and the resulting potential for conflict between Appalachian clients and non-Appalachian health providers. Still others examine cultural considerations in therapeutic encounters and mental health service delivery. The book is rich in case studies and empirical data. The practical, applied nature of the essays will enhance their value for practitioners seeking ways to improve mental health care in the region.

Evolution and Social Psychology by Mark Schaller,Jeffry A. Simpson,Douglas T. Kenrick Pdf

Why do we think about and interact with other people in the particular ways that we do? Might these thoughts and actions be contemporary products of our long-ago evolutionary past? If so, how might this be, and what are the implications? Research generated by an evolutionary approach to social psychology issues profound insights into self-concept, impression formation, prejudice, group dynamics, helping, aggression, social influence, culture, and every other topic that is fundamental to social psychology. Evolution and Social Psychology is the first book to review and discuss this broad range of social psychological phenomena from an evolutionary perspective. It does so with a critical and constructive eye. Readers will emerge with a clear sense of the intellectual challenges, as well as the scientific benefits, of an evolutionarily-informed social psychology. The world-renowned contributors identify new questions, new theories, and new hypotheses—many of which are only now beginning to be tested. Thus, this book not only summarizes the current status of the field, it also sets an agenda for the next generation of research on evolution and social psychology. Evolution and Social Psychology is essential reading for evolutionary psychologists and social psychologists alike.

Family Ties and Aging by Ingrid Arnet Connidis Pdf

"At last: a book that melds research on family ties in later life inclusively. Connidis' book is not simply a research compendium but a theoretical synthesis of value to both scholars and students. Connidis' clear writing style makes it an excellent choice for students... I recommend this book both to teachers and researchers in the areas of family and aging." -- JOURNAL OF MARRIAGE AND THE FAMILY Presenting a broad examination of the issues surrounding family ties and aging, this advances textbook provides an integrated and thorough representation of current research in the field. Whereas book on families and aging have traditionally focused on ties to a spouse and to children and grandchildren, Connidis's coverage is more extensive and more reflective of contemporary society. She includes groups and relationships that have typically been neglected, such as single, divorced, and childless older people and their family relationships, as well as sibling relationships among the elderly, live-in partnerships not formalized by marriage, and the family ties forged by gays and lesbians over their life course. Family Ties and Aging weaves the vast range of information we now have about the many facets of family relationships and aging into a critical, comprehensive, and integrated whole.

Appalachia's Children: The Challenge of Mental Health by David H. Looff Pdf

The analysis of the developmental experiences and resulting personality patterns of Southern Appalachian children is based upon fieldwork in psychiatric clinics in eastern Kentucky, where diagnostic evaluation and treatment were provided for emotionally disturbed children. Observations on the mental health, or mental disorder, of the children are made concurrently with and in the light of observations on the ways in which eastern Kentucky families raise their children and on the kinds of adjustments to life that these children make. The historical, geographic, and socioeconomic characteristics of the region, in addition to characteristic family life styles and child rearing practices, are presented as the necessary context for understanding the children's mental health problems. Mental disorders are viewed largely as social phenomena and mental health or disorder is seen as firmly embedded in the social matrix. The study of family structure and interrelationships reveals three prominent themes influential in child development - emphasis on infancy of the children and family closeness, poor development of verbal skills, and the consideration of sexual maturation and functioning as a tabooed topic. Instances of emotional disturbance discussed are grouped accordingly: dependency themes, communication patterns, and psychosexual themes. (Kw).
