This book is an attempt to get to the bottom of an acute and perennial tension between our best scientific pictures of the fundamental physical structure of the world and our everyday empirical experience of it. The trouble is about the direction of time. The situation (very briefly) is that it is a consequence of almost every one of those fundamental scientific pictures--and that it is at the same time radically at odds with our common sense--that whatever can happen can just as naturally happen backwards. Albert provides an unprecedentedly clear, lively, and systematic new account--in the context of a Newtonian-Mechanical picture of the world--of the ultimate origins of the statistical regularities we see around us, of the temporal irreversibility of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, of the asymmetries in our epistemic access to the past and the future, and of our conviction that by acting now we can affect the future but not the past. Then, in the final section of the book, he generalizes the Newtonian picture to the quantum-mechanical case and (most interestingly) suggests a very deep potential connection between the problem of the direction of time and the quantum-mechanical measurement problem. The book aims to be both an original contribution to the present scientific and philosophical understanding of these matters at the most advanced level, and something in the nature of an elementary textbook on the subject accessible to interested high-school students.

Born in Alton, New York, Cyrus Leroy Baldridge became a noted illustrator, set designer, and painter of Southwestern desert and mountain landscapes. During his childhood, his family moved frequently, but he received art training from age ten, first studying with famous newspaper illustrator Frank Holme. He earned a degree in English Literature from the University of Chicago and then took a commercial art job as a field artist during World War I. He began sketching at the battle fronts of World War I, first as a freelance artist and then for Stars & Stripes. After the war, he traveled across three continents, spending time in Africa, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Middle East and Europe. He illustrated numerous books, including those of his wife, Caroline Singer. His works range from sketches and engravings to watercolors and portraits of the famous. In the 1940s, Cyrus Baldridge illustrated more than one hundred books and magazine articles and, in 1947, he wrote an autobiography: Time and Chance. The book is both splendidly written and lavishly illustrated. It was quite successful, being listed on the New York Times best seller list for months. Profits from Time and Chance, combined with several years of earnings from well-paid work with the Information Please Almanac, made it possible for him and Caroline to retire to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1951. There they lived simply in a small adobe house among like-minded free-spirits.

Inevitably, he gravitates toward the city's red light district, where he hires and then falls in love with tragic shop-window whore Hannah. Then he's contacted by a shadowy American agent, who convinces John to take a job as a brothel guard and drug courier to Hannah's pimp, Josh, in order to investigate a Dutch terrorist cell. John tries to apply the moral rigidities of duty and honor to the baffling emotional complexities of love. Throughout, he wallows in the atmospherics of Dutch and Parisian streetscapes, which the author adeptly juxtaposes with decidedly unglamorous depictions of the realities of Amsterdam's sexual demimonde. Hopkins, a veteran and lawyer, has trouble integrating John's battlefield flashbacks into the story arc, but the intermittent covert-ops procedural of the main narrative is mostly handled in a spare and convincing style. Appended are two poignant short stories, about a boy confronting his divorced mother's suicide attempt and a man coping with his father's impending death. Despite occasional patches of clumsy writing, Hopkins invests this hybrid thriller/love story with palpable psychological resonance. -Kirkus Discoveries
