When the Greek island of Santorini, classically known as Thera, erupted dramatically in 1613 BC (+/- 13 years), it produced one of the largest explosions ever witnessed, thereby possibly giving rise to the legend of Atlantis. This so-called 'Minoan' eruption triggered tsunamis that devastated coastal settlements in the region, and on Santorini it left behind a Bronze Age Pompeii, which is currently being excavated. Thriving Bronze Age settlements on the island - rich in colorful wall paintings and highly sophisticated pottery - were buried under thick layers of volcanic ash. The ejection of an immense volume of dust into the atmosphere also altered global climate for several years. The author, a well-known geologist, blends the thrill of scientific discovery with a popular presentation of the geology, archeology, history, peoples, and environmental settings of the island group of Santorini. He not only gives a comprehensive overview of the volcanic island and its past, but also reports on the latest discoveries: The finding, for example, of the olive trees which had been buried alive by the Minoan eruption has made it possible now to give a direct and precise radiocarbon date for the volcanic catastrophe. This volume presents the findings of a major international project on the application of radiocarbon dating to the Egyptian historical chronology. The research has implications for the whole region because the Egyptian chronology anchors the timing of historical events in neighbouring areas tied to the reign of particular Egyptian kings. The results will allow for more historical comparisons to be made in countries like Libya and Sudan, which have conducted radiocarbon dating techniques on places of archaeological interest in the past.

Názory a výsledky přírodních věd a tradiční archeologie se neshodují a jejich argumentace umísťují událost od poloviny 17. století až po konec 16. století před Kr., výjimečně i později. Práce analyzuje jednotlivé argumenty i metodologické přístupy a snaží se odpovědět na otázku neshody jednotlivých přístupů. Tzv. mínojská erupce (nebo santorinská katastrofa) ovlivnila nejenom životy lidí ve velmi širokém regionu, ale také globální klima. Jedná se tedy o klíčovou událost pozdní doby bronzové. Její přesné datování umožní synchronizaci regionálních chronologických systémů mediteránních a evropských regionů a tvorbu přesného časového rámce, který je nutností pro další řešení kauzálních otázek historie doby bronzové.

Consequently, who to believe: Moses or Egyptologists? Several scholars (Finkelstein, Dever and others) posit that the Exodus narrative may have developed from collective memories of the Hyksos expulsions of Semitic Canaanites from Egypt, possibly elaborated on to encourage resistance to the 7th century domination of Judah by Egypt. For these scholars the liberation from Egypt after the "10 plagues", as it is written in the Book of Exodus, is quite different from the historical "war of liberation against the Hyksos". What are the Egyptian documents underlying this hypothesis: none, and what is the chronology of this mysterious war: nobody knows! Consequently, who to believe: Moses or Egyptologists?
