Times Remembered by Joe La Barbera,Charles Levin Pdf

In the late 1970s legendary pianist Bill Evans was at the peak of his career. He revolutionized the jazz trio (bass, piano, drums) by giving each part equal emphasis in what jazz historian Ted Gioia called a “telepathic level” of interplay. It was an ideal opportunity for a sideman, and after auditioning in 1978, Joe La Barbera was ecstatic when he was offered the drum chair, completing the trio with Evans and bassist Marc Johnson. In Times Remembered, La Barbera and co-author Charles Levin provide an intimate fly-on-the-wall peek into Evans’s life, critical recording sessions, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes of life on the road. Joe regales the trio’s magical connection, a group that quickly gelled to play music on the deepest and purest level imaginable. He also watches his dream gig disappear, a casualty of Evans’s historical drug abuse when the pianist dies in a New York hospital emergency room in 1980. But La Barbera tells this story with love and respect, free of judgment, showing Evans’s humanity and uncanny ability to transcend physical weakness and deliver first-rate performances at nearly every show.

Forgotten Times Remembered by Robert R. Glendon Pdf

In Forgotten Times Remembered, Glendon, through the eyes of a boy growing up during the Great Depression of the 1930s, narrates the love and determination of his Scots mother to keep, a roof over their heads, of his older siblings seeking work when the country was mired in massive unemployment, of the daily struggles of a family just staying afloat. In spite of hardships this is a story of optimism, of a time when there were front porches, a time when a neighbors help was essential to life itself. It is a warm look at a time when laughter, oft times, covered the grim reality of their futures.

Sunday Afternoons and Other Times Remembered by Ben Ewell Pdf

On the afternoon of Easter Sunday, 1992, Ben Ewell’s brother, sister-in-law, and niece were all murdered. While trying to make sense of this staggering tragedy, Ben can’t help but think back through his life: the hard work and the many peaceful Sunday afternoons growing up on his family farm in Ohio in a house without a bathroom or running water; his high school antics in the 1950s; his time in Haight-Ashbury while attending law school in 1960s San Francisco; and the highs and lows, both personal and professional, of life after school. Threaded throughout these reminiscences, Ben reveals the details of the investigation of his family members’ murders—and the arrest and trial of the parties involved. In this decades-long saga, there is marriage and divorce, love and loss, family and friendship; there are political campaigns and business ventures, some failed and some fruitful. Ultimately, this is a story of perseverance in the face of tragedy, of creating opportunities out of problems, and of appreciating the gift of life and the world around us—with some humor along the way.

All Things Remembered by Goldie Pdf

Who better to tell the story of the gentrification of a musical genre than the man who started out as Jungle's most streetwise ambassador and went on to collect an MBE from Buckingham Palace? But Goldie's uncensored, hard-hitting memoir is far more than just the story of the house-training of drum 'n' bass. As one of Britain's most influential DJs, producers, promoters, and record-label owners - whose contributions to the UK rave scene in the 1990s defined the genres jungle and urban rave, Goldie is an iconic figure. Hugely addictive, this gonzo memoir is a vertiginous thrill-ride from the darkest depths of the West Midlands care-home system to the snowiest uplands of coke-crazed international celebrity. It is an explosive story of abuse, revenge, graffiti, gold teeth, sawn-off shotguns, car crashes, hot yoga, absent fatherhood, and redemption through reality TV.

Poems Short Stories and Things Remembered by Gloria G. Blakeney Pdf

This book is a collection of poems short stories and things remembered from the author's years of growing up. The poems were started when, while watching tv, I started writing down stuff about angels. The next thing I knew I had three poems written about angels. Things just kept going from there. The book of Ruth has always been a favorite of mine. Before I got through writing the story about Ruth, I felt led to write the story on Ester. A dear friend who is a retired school teacher, read these poems and stories and encouraged me to continue and put all my writings into a book. Many of the stories are from family experiences, so, one could say they really are true stories. I hope something in this book will touch and change someones life.

A Time Remembered by Marjorie Major Pdf

Born in 1925, Marjorie Major (nee Pank) grew up in the east coast sea port of Hull. Rather than a life history, these memoires tell stories of particular events, like a Christmas family party, and in so doing capture a true sense of the 1930s and what family life must have been like for many children in England at that time. She also recalls the years of the Second World War when Hull was heavily bombed and her family moved out of the city after several near misses from enemy bombing. These teenage memories give a personal and poignant view of the great world upheaval that was taking place.

I Remembered by Kristene E. Friday Pdf

"I Remembered" chronicles my experience¿at age forty-nine¿when I recalled the sexual abuse by my father as a young girl. Through my journal entries, represented here verbatim, I share my journey to heal from the aftermath of this profound awakening. My story is one of survival. It follows the course of the first year of healing¿from my psychotic break and diagnosis of PTSD and paranoia, through the flashbacks and memories, my disclosure to family, working through the grief process, and finally to acceptance and forgiveness. My story is one of survival and hope¿one that will interest fellow survivors of sexual abuse, loved ones who want to help them, the recovery community, and those with a general interest in this subject. Silence and shame are hallmarks of sexual abuse and my story lends a personal voice to what survivors experience in their struggle to heal. I read several books on the subject of healing from sexual abuse, and I could not find one like this which shares what it is like to work through this overwhelming process. My story is raw and unflinching, and my purpose in sharing it is to lend hope and help to other survivors.

D-Day Remembered by Michael Dolski Pdf

D-Day, the Allied invasion of northwestern France in June 1944, has remained in the forefront of American memories of the Second World War to this day. Depictions in books, news stories, documentaries, museums, monuments, memorial celebrations, speeches, games, and Hollywood spectaculars have overwhelmingly romanticized the assault as an event in which citizen-soldiers—the everyday heroes of democracy—engaged evil foes in a decisive clash fought for liberty, national redemption, and world salvation. In D-Day Remembered, Michael R. Dolski explores the evolution of American D-Day tales over the course of the past seven decades. He shows the ways in which that particular episode came to overshadow so many others in portraying the twentieth century’s most devastating cataclysm as “the Good War.” With depth and insight, he analyzes how depictions in various media, such as the popular histories of Stephen Ambrose and films like The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan, have time and again reaffirmed cherished American notions of democracy, fair play, moral order, and the militant, yet non-militaristic, use of power for divinely sanctioned purposes. Only during the Vietnam era, when Americans had to confront an especially stark challenge to their pietistic sense of nationhood, did memories of D-Day momentarily fade. They soon reemerged, however, as the country sought to move beyond the lamentable conflict in Southeast Asia. Even as portrayals of D-Day have gone from sanitized early versions to more realistic acknowledgments of tactical mistakes and the horrific costs of the battle, the overarching story continues to be, for many, a powerful reminder of moral rectitude, military skill, and world mission. While the time to historicize this morality tale more fully and honestly has long since come, Dolski observes, the lingering positive connotations of D-Day indicate that the story is not yet finished.

Time Travel in Popular Media by Matthew Jones,Joan Ormrod Pdf

In recent years numerous films, television series, comic books, graphic novels and video games have featured time travel narratives, with characters jumping backward, forward and laterally through time. No rules govern time travel in these stories. Some characters move by machine, some by magic, others by unexplained means. Sometime travelers can alter the timeline, while others are prevented from causing temporal aberrations. The fluid forms of imagined time travel have fascinated audiences and prompted debate since at least the 19th century. What is behind our fascination with time travel? What does it mean to be out of one's own era? How do different media tell these stories and what does this reveal about the media's relationship to time? This collection of new essays--the first to address time travel across a range of media--answers these questions by locating time travel narratives within their cultural, historical and philosophical contexts. Texts discussed include Doctor Who, The Terminator, The Georgian House, Save the Date, Back to the Future, Inception, Source Code and others.
