Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto (Classic Reprint) by J. B. Stoughton Holborn Pdf
Excerpt from Jacopo Robusti Called Tintoretto Abridgment in essay form of a much larger work at onetime contemplated and partially completed. This fact may account for what will be felt by the real student Of Tintoretto to be a somewhat uneven treat ment of the subject. The author takes this opportunity of expressing his thanks to all those who have so kindly assisted him, especially friends in Venice. TO Miss Holbom of Aberdeen Park his gratitude is particularly due, as without her aid the book would never have been written, and to her he would dedicate this small effort. Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti, Called Tintoretto (Classic Reprint) by Frank Preston Stearns Pdf
Excerpt from Life and Genius of Jacopo Robusti, Called Tintoretto The thirty-first of May was the three hundredth anniversary of Tintoretto's death, and as yet no adequate account of him has appeared in English, or, so far as I can discover, in any language. Much that is excellent has been written about him by Taine, Ruskin, and other critics, but no clear analysis of his genius, no thorough and systematic examination of his works, has yet been placed before the public. Mr. Osler's little book is good so far as it goes, but the evolution of Tintoretto as a painter is not in it. At the same time it contains many valuable suggestions, and no other writer has appreciated so well the moral equality of this master's painting. The Italian Life of Tintoretto by Ridolfi does not appear to have been translated into English. The friends who have assisted me in the present undertaking can testify to the thorough manner in which it has been performed. Every clew that might lead to fresh information has been followed out carefully, and all publications in French, German, and Italian which could throw light on the subject have been consulted. Nature in Italian Art by Emma Gurney-Salter Pdf
Excerpt from Nature in Italian Art: A Study of Landscape Backgrounds, From Giotto to Tintoretto The treatment of Nature by the Medieval and Renaissance painters of Italy has for the most part been considered as merely accessory to their figure-subjects;its distinctive merits have thus been insufficiently appreciated. The object of the present book is to show that there existed from the thirteenth century an attempt to study Nature for her own sake, tracing the development of landscape from the summary conventions of Giotto and his followers to its magnificent culmination in the Venetian School. The pictures discussed are typical examples of the various masters, attention being throughout concentrated on their landscape setting; Nature is taken to include flowers and beasts. Chronology is observed wherever possible, although a certain amount of overlapping is inevitable in passing from one School to another. The Venetians have been reserved for the later chapters, and are there treated consecutively. I have endeavoured to acknowledge ideas and attributions taken from critics of Italian painting, foremost among whom one must mention Mr. Berenson. Four Great Venetians by Frank Preston Stearns Pdf
Excerpt from Four Great Venetians: An Account of the Lives and Works of Giorgione Titian, Tintoretto, and IL Veronese Giotto, and the sculpture of Donatello are pene trated with an intense seriousness such as no Keltic race has ever given proof of, nor do we meet with its like in the art or literature of any other race, an cient or modern. It was this intensity of feeling, this deep-rooted spiritual earnestness, which formed the basis of Italian art, and through which alone it succeeded in rising to the most exalted heights. It is true that the more strongly Gallic communities Of northern Italy were quick to apprehend its value, adopted it, and assimilated themselves to it; so that Tuscan art flourished and became in a manner in digenous in their own fertile plains, just as the French of our time assimilate foreign ideas and in ventions more readily than other races. Correggio is the typical example of the Tuscan principle grafted upon a thoroughly Gallic nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Tintoretto by Tom Nichols Pdf
The Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto (1518 94) is an ambiguous figure in the history of art. Critics and writers such as Vasari, Ruskin and Sartre all placed him in opposition to the established artistic practice of his time, noting that he had abandoned the values that typified the venerable Venetian Renaissance tradition, even being expelled as an apprentice from the workshop of Titian. This generously illustrated book offers a long-overdue re-evaluation of Tintoretto. Tom Nichols charts the artist's life and work in the context of Venetian art and the culture of the Cinquecento. He shows how the artist created a new manner of painting, which for all its originality and sophistication made its first appeal to the shared emotions of the widest-possible viewing audience. The book deals extensively with Tintoretto's greatest works, including the paintings at the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice."

The Venetian School of Painting by Evelyn March Phillipps Pdf
The Venetian School of Painting By Evelyn March Phillipps CHAPTER I VENICE AND HER ART Venetian painting in its prime differs altogether in character from that of every other part of Italy. The Venetian is the most marked and recognisable of all the schools; its singularity is such that a novice in art can easily, in a miscellaneous collection, sort out the works belonging to it, and added to this unique character is the position it occupies in the domain of art. Venice alone of Italian States can boast an epoch of art comparable in originality and splendour to that of her great Florentine rival; an epoch which is to be classed among the great art manifestations of the world, which has exerted, and continues to exert, incalculable power over painting, and which is the inspiration as well as the despair of those who try to master its secret. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades.
